Book excerpt: (Uncorrected OCR) Abstract of thesis entitled RESONANCE RAMAN INTENSITY ANALYSIS STUDIES OF BOND SELECTIVE ELECTRONIC EXCITATION IN 1,2-DIHALOETHANES AND CONFORMATIONAL EFFECTS ON THE A-BAND SHORT-TIME PHOTODISSOCIATION DYNAMICS OF 1-IODOPROPANE, IODOCYCLOHEXANE AND IODOCYCLOPENTANE Submitted by Xuming ZHENG for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in February 2000 Resonance Raman spectra of 1-X-2-iodoethane (X = Cl, Br, I), 1-iodopropane, iodocyclopentane in cyclohexane solution, and iodocyclohexane in acetonitrile solution have been obtained with excitation wavelengths within their A-band absorption. Vibrational (FT-Raman and FT-Infrared) spectroscopic investigations, ab initio calculations, and normal coordinate analyses were carried out to make vibrational assignments for the anti- and the gauche-1-X-2-iodoethane (X= Cl, Br, I) conformers and the axial- and the equatorial-iodocyclopentane conformers. Normal coordinate calculations were done for all the compounds studied in order to obtain normal-mode vectors. The resonance Raman intensities and A-band absorption spectra were simulated using a simple model and time-dependent wavepacket calculations. The simulation results and normal mode vectors were used to find the short-time photodissociation dynamics in terms of internal coordinate displacements. The A-band short-time photodissociation dynamics (at 10 fs) of 1-X-2-iodoethanes show interesting trends as the X halogen atom becomes larger. As the molecule changes from iodoethane to 1-chloro-2-iodoethane and finally to 1,2-diiodoethane, the C-I bond length changes generally proceed from a fairly long and narrow range for iodoethane to broader ranges and shorter bond length changes for 1,2-diiodoethane. A similar trend for the C-C bond length changes is also observed with a narrower to a broader range of displacements as the molecule changes from iodoethane to 1,2-diiodoethane. This suggests that as the haloethyl group becomes more ma.

Book Femtochemistry and Femtobiology

Download or read book Femtochemistry and Femtobiology written by Abderrazzak Douhal and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002 with total page 854 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains important contributions from top international scientists on the-state-of-the-art of femtochemistry and femtobiology at the beginning of the new millennium. It consists of reviews and papers on ultrafast dynamics in molecular science. The coverage of topics highlights several important features of molecular science from the viewpoint of structure (space domain) and dynamics (time domain). First of all, the book presents the latest developments, such as experimental techniques for understanding ultrafast processes in gas, condensed and complex systems, including biological molecules, surfaces and nanostructures. At the same time it stresses the different ways to control the rates and pathways of reactive events in chemistry and biology. Particular emphasis is given to biological processes as an area where femtodynamics is becoming very useful for resolving the structural dynamics from techniques such as electron diffraction, and X-ray and IR spectroscopy. Finally, the latest developments in quantum control (in both theory and experiment) and the experimental pulse-shaping techniques are described.

Book 71st International Symposium on Molecular Spectroscopy

Download or read book 71st International Symposium on Molecular Spectroscopy written by Benjamin J. Mccall and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-05-25 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Symposium on Molecular Spectroscopy is the premier annual meeting in this exciting and interdisciplinary field. The symposium uniquely combines plenary talks from world leaders in the field with parallel sessions comprising shorter talks, many presented by graduate students, and fosters a collegial and collaborative atmosphere with a multitude of formal and informal interactions. Registration and housing costs are kept low to enable entire research groups to attend, and in fact most senior people in the field gave their very first conference presentation at this symposium (to a very friendly audience). A wide range of topics is covered, from theory to experiment, from gas-phase to condensed-phase, from low resolution to ultra-high resolution, from the microwave to the ultraviolet, and from fundamental science to applications such as astronomy and atmospheric science. Each year's meeting also includes three "mini-symposia" on topics of special interest.
