Book Biology of Fishes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Quentin Bone
  • Publisher : Garland Science
  • Release : 2008-02-01
  • ISBN : 0203885228
  • Pages : 497 pages

Download or read book Biology of Fishes written by Quentin Bone and published by Garland Science. This book was released on 2008-02-01 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Third Edition of Biology of Fishes is chiefly about fish as remarkably efficient machines for coping with the many problems that life in water entails, and looks at many such special cases. Fishes form the largest group of vertebrates, with around 20,000 known species, and they display a remarkable diversity of size, shape, internal structure and ecology to cope with environments ranging from transient puddles to the abyssal depths of the sea. Biology of Fishes does not try to cover all aspects of fish biology, but focuses on the ingenious ways in which fish have resolved the particular problems that come from living in water, especially body fluid regulation, locomotion, feeding mechanisms, and sensory systems. Enough detail is provided for the reader to be able to go on and use primary research papers. Each chapter has been thoroughly updated and a new chapter on the immune system has been added. This is an ideal textbook for students of fish biology and any of the branches of aquatic biology. Given its skilful combination of breadth and detail, the book also provides a manageable review of fish biology for experienced biologists.

Book Biology and Ecology of Fishes

Download or read book Biology and Ecology of Fishes written by James S. Diana and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-06-08 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biology and Ecology of Fishes Immerse yourself in the world of fish ecology with the newest edition of this essential introduction The study of fish ecology has traditionally proceeded along two tracks: the first is more basic, concerned with the anatomy, physiology and theoretical ecology of fish, and the second is more practical, concerning itself with fish populations, management, and habitats. Many fish researchers have come to view this distinction as artificial, and to develop a new study of fish that combines both tracks in a single holistic approach. It has never been more critical for introductory textbooks to represent this combined study in order to prepare the next generation of fish biologists and fishery scientists. Biology and Ecology of Fishes meets this need with a textbook that incorporates both biology and population management. Beginning with a general introduction to aquatic life and ecosystems, this book covers anatomical, environmental, and ethological topics to give a thoroughly rounded view of its subject, promising to serve as the fundamental introduction to multidisciplinary fish studies. Readers of the third edition of Biology and Ecology of Fishes will also find: Detailed coverage of subjects including growth and bioenergetics, feeding and predation, mortality and recruitment and more Increased attention to stressors of fish populations and communities New and revised chapters that introduce quantitative methods and present emerging issues facing fish populations and communities Biology and Ecology of Fishes is a useful overview for advanced undergraduate and graduate students studying fish ecology or fishery biology, as well as a reference for researchers and professionals in fish ecology, fish population management, and related fields.

Book Methods for Fish Biology

Download or read book Methods for Fish Biology written by Carl B. Schreck and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is designed as both a reference and a handbook for the study of fishes. It is a source of methods commonly used to research fish genetics, systematics, anatomy, physiology, developmental biology, toxicology, behavior, and ecology. Standard methods and their theoretical framework are presented for all these fields. Each of the book's 20 chapters also contains a background literature review which, though not exhaustive, allows readers to delve more deeply into subjects that particularly interest them. The main emphasis is on methodology, but the pros and cons of alternative procedures also are treated, as are the uses and misuses of data generated by the techniques.

Download or read book Essential Fish Biology written by Derek Burton and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essential Fish Biology provides an introductory overview of the functional biology of fish and how this may be affected by the widely contrasting habitat conditions within the aquatic environment. It describes the recent advances in comparative animal physiology which have greatly influenced our understanding of fish function as well as generating questions that have yet to be resolved. Fish taxa represent the largest number of vertebrates, with over 25,000 extant species. However, much of our knowledge, apart from taxonomy and habitat descriptions, has been based on relatively few of them, usually those which live in fresh water and/or are ofcommercial interest. Unfortunately there has also been a tendency to base our interpretation of fish physiology on that of mammalian systems, as well as to rely on a few type species of fish. This accessible textbook will redress the balance by using examples of fish from a wide range of species and habitats, emphasizing diversity as well as recognizing shared attributes with other vertebrates.

Download or read book Biology of Fishes written by Quentin Bone and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-10-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, the first edition of which was published in 1982, has been largely rewritten with many new figures, to take account of recent information resulting from the huge rate of publication of scientific papers and books on fishes. As an example, the continuing series "Fish Physiology" (Academic Press) has just reached its 12th volume, covering in two parts only the cardio-vascular systems of fishes. The original authors, Q. Bone and N.B. Marshall, invited J.H.S. Blaxter to help widen the expertise on fish reproduction, behaviour and exploita tion, leading to new chapters on behaviour, fisheries and aquaculture. A chapter on endocrines has been added and earlier chapters have been brought up-to-date. We have chosen those topics which seem to us to be most useful and interesting, inevitably reflecting our own fields of interest. We have, however, tried to make the bibliography sufficiently wide ranging for the reader to find an introduction to those topics not covered, and to be able to enjoy further forays into those that are. Fish are the most varied and abundant of vertebrates and the commercial and sport fisheries are of great economic importance. Fish stocks are not vulnerable to drought, as are so many terrestrial sources of protein, but they are highly vulnerable to pollution and overfishing. At least 80% of fish are caught by hunting and this proportion is unlikely to fall; many stocks are shared and lead to political decision-making about management.
