Book excerpt: Bomb voyage! Captain Jayson Rivers, owner of a commercial mining scoop, likes the simple life. He appreciates order, making money, and reaping the rewards of a hard day’s work. What he doesn’t like is getting dragged into galactic politics, or into the crosshairs of his ex-wife, a ruthless bomber, who has already tried to take him out once. He doesn’t need complications, like the sexy red-headed mechanic who’s walked her sweet ass onto his vessel, bringing with her a shitload of trouble and turning his world upside down. From expensive and illegal boiler parts that break the bank, to homicidal in-laws and a shotgun wedding he’d better be able to get an annulment from, his life can’t get much more complicated. Until he ends up knocked out, bound naked with his bride, on a one-way trip to a hostile world with a bomb hooked to the control panel of his shuttle. Yeah, the universe is a crazy place, but Jayson’s simple life has gone past complicated. He’s sliced off a bit of that insanity pie, and things might never go back to normal, if he can even remember what that is.

Book The Origins of English Words

Download or read book The Origins of English Words written by Joseph Twadell Shipley and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2001-07 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are no direct records of the original Indo-European speech. By comparing the vocabularies of its various descendants, however, it is possible to reconstruct the basic Indo-European roots with considerable confidence. In The Origins of English Words, Shipley catalogues these proposed roots and follows the often devious, always fascinating, process by which some of their offshoots have grown. Anecdotal, eclectic, and always enthusiastic, The Origins of English Words is a diverting expedition beyond linguistics into literature, history, folklore, anthropology, philosophy, and science.

Book Our Struggle

    Book Details:
  • Author : Wayne Holloway
  • Publisher : Influx Press
  • Release : 2022-09-15
  • ISBN : 1914391209
  • Pages : 377 pages

Download or read book Our Struggle written by Wayne Holloway and published by Influx Press. This book was released on 2022-09-15 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A barnstorming epic of the '80s British Left' Hari Kunzru, author of Red Pill Paul, ex-tube driver and drinking partner of legendary Union leader Bob Crowe turns up at Essex University in the early 1980s haunted by the death of his colleague on the tracks. Thrown into the radical mix of Student Union life and the academic intoxication of post-modern theory taught by the likes of Ernesto Laclau, Jacques Derrida and a very young Slavoj Zizek, Paul befriends the novel's unnamed narrator. What follows is a riotous attempt to put the 20th Century to bed, as seen through the eyes of the foot soldiers of British history. From Miners strikes to IRA collection buckets, ANC demonstrations and some very dodgy handling of Soviet money, Our Struggle climaxes with a devastating denouement in modern day Kurdistan. Holloway's epic tale asks the big questions, does what we think, what we say and what we do ever match up? Or are we destined to fall short of the ideals we think we cherish?
