Book Bolt from the Sky The Operational Employment of Airborne Forces

Download or read book Bolt from the Sky The Operational Employment of Airborne Forces written by and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study explores the utility of using airborne forces at the operational level of a mid- to high intensity war. Despite the theoretical capability of airborne forces to achieve surprise, psychological shock, physical momentum, and moral dominance enabling friendly forces to attain decisive operational success, the author believes the U.S Army has limited its vision on employment of airborne forces to the tactical and strategic levels. The study examines historical small-scale airborne operations and relates ideas developed from these examples to type missions that airborne forces may be called upon to execute in the 1980's such as airborne drops behind enemy lines to seize key terrain such as a river crossing site or mountain pass, drops to tie up enemy reserves to enable amphibious operations or large river crossings to succeed, or vertical envelopments of key points of an enemy defensive belt. There are numerous historical examples in which brigade-sized or smaller airborne forces were employed in the true spirit of maneuver warfare in combination with other ground forces. Where such maneuvers depended on the success of the airborne operation for overall success, it is evident that even small scale airborne forces and decisive operational impact.

Book Airborne Deep Operational Maneuver

Download or read book Airborne Deep Operational Maneuver written by Major Danny M. Davis and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-08-15 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this paper is to answer two questions. The first question is: Is it feasible to use airborne forces to penetrate enemy airspace and to conduct a vertical envelopment to effect deep operational maneuver? If it is feasible, what are the employment options available for the use of such an airborne force in the conduct of a modern military campaign? To examine these questions, the paper begins with some definitions to provide a common frame of reference. The use of airborne forces in World War II is next examined to determine if the use of airborne forces to effect deep operational maneuver is historically feasible. Next, the contemporary threat is discussed as it is relevant to the employment of airborne forces in a modern context. Next, the feasibility of the use of airborne forces with some limitations to conduct deep operational maneuver is established in the context of the maneuver, firepower, and protection aspects of the combat power model. Next, the theory of deep operations and the use of airborne forces to conduct these kinds of deep maneuvers is examined in the theories of Clausewitz, Jomini, Tukhachevskiy, Triandafillov, and Simpkin. Next, six employment options for the use of airborne forces to conduct deep operations in a modern context are deduced. They are: (1) an airborne force can be used to create a second front within a theater of operations; (2) an airborne force can be used to operationally contain an enemy force targeted for destruction within a theater of operations; (3) an airborne force can be used to seize a “bridgehead”...; (4) an airborne force can conduct coups de main against high value targets within a theater of operations; (5) an airborne force can conduct light operations in a theater of operations to disrupt and disorganize the enemy’s rear facilities and networks and have a cumulative operational impact; and (6) an airborne force can conduct expeditionary operations to achieve political, strategic, and operational aims

Book Operational Employment Of The Airborne Brigade Combat Team The 503d Parachute Infantry Regiment As A Case Study

Download or read book Operational Employment Of The Airborne Brigade Combat Team The 503d Parachute Infantry Regiment As A Case Study written by Major Matthew J. Konz and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the focus on the Brigade Combat Team as the Army’s primary combat unit, the limited availability of U.S. Air Force airlift assets, and the U.S. Army history of employing predominantly medium sized airborne units, future airborne operations in support of operational level objectives will likely center around the Airborne Brigade Combat Team (ABCT). The combat airborne operations of the 503d Parachute Infantry Regiment will provide a case study to assess the elements of risk, surprise and the operational context of how the airborne unit contributed to the achievement the operational and strategic outcomes. The combat airborne operations discussed are the jump to re-take the island of Corregidor in the Philippines in February 1945, Operation Junction City in February 1967, and the airborne insertion of the 173d Airborne Brigade onto the Bashur airfield in Northern Iraq in March 2003. The intent of this monograph is to provide insights into the possible employment of the current ABCT and how to best use the resources and organization that we have, not necessarily to advocate a radically new airborne organization, propose new equipment, or recommend a new mission for airborne forces.

Book excerpt: The airborne concept has had a lasting impact on military force structures since its employment on a large scale during World War II. It is puzzling to consider how little airborne organizational structures and employment concepts have changed in the intervening seven decades, considering the great amount of change occurring in warfare. This thesis examines the future potential of airborne concepts by rethinking traditional airborne organizational structures and employment concepts. Using a holistic approach in the areas of organization, doctrine, technology, and strategy as guiding frames of reference, this thesis recommends updating the organizational structures of airborne forces to model a "small and many" approach over a "large and few" approach, while incorporating a "swarming" concept. Utilizing historical and contemporary vignettes to demonstrate airborne utility, this research reveals how a parachute capability displays the unique attributes to complement a swarming concept. Under an updated organizational structure and new employment concept, airborne forces can offer renewed relevancy to the U.S. Department of Defense against modern adversaries in crises and conflict. CONCLUSION In September 1944, over 20,000 Allied airborne troops were utilized in the Netherlands as part of Operation Market Garden. The sky would have been thick with parachutes as two entire U.S. Army divisions-the 82nd and 101st-were dropped behind German lines, along with equipment and an additional 15,000 glider troops. This combined arms operation resulted in heavy losses for the Allies, particularly the airborne forces, which were prevented from linking up with the relief columns as planned. It is difficult to conceive of another such spectacle on today's battlefields: the sun literally blotted out by thousands of U.S. paratroopers drifting slowly into harm's way. Yet, U.S. airborne forces' structure has remained largely unchanged since World War II, 70 years ago.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handsome, large-format book takes the reader on an illustrated tour of the U.S. Army's hard-hitting airborne forces, from the original Parachute Test Platoon of 1940 to the multiple global commitment of the twenty-first century. Featuring more than 150 photographs, some rare or seldom seen and many in color, the work highlights the extraordinary history of the airborne units as they added new dimensions to national power and military operations, arriving from the sky by parachute and aircraft and compressing time by their swift deployment and flight to objectives thousands of miles distant. Airborne operations of World War II in the Mediterranean, Europe, and the Pacific begin an inspiring story that leads through Korea, Vietnam, and into the twenty-first century. The operations take a prominent place in the story, along with the paratroopers who received the nation's highest award for heroism, the Medal of Honor. The esprit de corps of the airborne volunteers and their sacrifices in peace and war are consistent themes throughout the book. Whether operating as small groups of paratroopers scattered about the countryside or as powerful parachute infantry regiments, brigades, or divisions, the airborne spirit is always evident. Coauthors John Greenwood and Robert K. Wright highlight key leaders and crucial battles spanning more than six decades to help tell this exciting story. Through skillful integration of photographs and text, they show how lessons learned in combat led to improved doctrine and the development of equipment that enhanced the mobility and striking power of these versatile units. This book is published in cooperation with the Association of the United States Army.

Book excerpt: The United States Army’s experiment with airborne forces started at Fort Benning, Georgia, in early 1940 with a single platoon of paratroopers. From this tiny seed grew the mighty American airborne legion that spearheaded America’s attack against Nazi Germany in Sicily and Normandy. Ultimately this branch included an airborne corps headquarters, five full airborne divisions, and several independent battalions and regiments. On the nights of June 5 and 6, 1944, the parachutes and gliders of six regiments of American airborne infantry filled the dark sky over Normandy. Paratroopers and glidermen of the 101st Airborne Division Screaming Eagles were literally dropping into battle for the first time, harbingers of the vast Allied D-day armada. Moments later, they were joined by the veteran All Americans of the 82d Airborne Division, who had first jumped into combat almost a year earlier in Sicily. For the American airborne troopers, the road to victory in Europe led through the ill-conceived Arnhem campaign and on to the Bulge, where the American paratroopers saved the day for the Allies. The 17th Airborne Division “bounced the Rhine” in the last airborne operation in Europe and fought across Germany until VE Day with their band of brothers. In the Pacific, the Angels of the 11th Airborne Division saw hard combat in the Philippines. The independent 503d Regimental Combat Team fulfilled General MacArthur’s promise to return when it daringly parachuted onto the small area known as Topside on the rocky fortress island of Corregidor. Following World War II, the airborne fought with distinction in Korea, Vietnam, and the Gulf War. Along the way American paratroopers have also given yeoman service on smaller battlefields such as the Dominican Republic, Grenada, and Panama. Written by a former paratrooper, Airborne is the definitive combat history of these elite forces.

Book Historical Study of Some World War II Airborne Operations

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: World War II saw the development of airborne operations and airborne warfare to the point where an airborne operation-- that is, the forces and techniques of which it is composed and their use could be looked upon as an additional weapons system of the armed forces or at least as a highly specialized task force combining both ground forces and air forces in a joint operation. As used in this report, an airborne operation is defined as an operation involving the movement of armed forces by air into an objective area for ground combat. The definition included the action of these armed forces on the ground as long as they are in no other contact with friendly forces except by air. During World War II airborne operations were employed on both sides in a variety of situations and with varying degrees of success. The U.S. Airborne forces in particular, experienced a considerable development both in size and technique. Like any new development in military thought and technique, the idea of the airborne assault has much appeal to the imagination. It is easy for enthusiasts in this direction to envisage the transport by air of entire army in the field of battle. There are others who believe that the overall cost of operations of this type, particularly on a very large scale, is out of proportion to the results that can be achieved. It would be most desirable and valuable indeed to have an accurate evaluation of military worth and effectiveness of an airborne assault. The Weapons Systems Evaluations Group has undertaken the study and evaluation of airborne operations from the standpoint of their use in a possible future war. A very specific question to be answered in this regard is the efficiency of which present airborne units can implement their portion of the current war planes.
