This book was released on 2021-02-28 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability of Skipjack tuna fishing in Brazil is the result of a research carried out by FUNBIO / RJ together with several researchers and professionals for the Marine and Fishing Research Support Project in Rio de Janeiro. The work is distributed in four major thematic units and organized in 13 chapters that dialogue in an interdisciplinary way, but with the same centralizing theme. There were 3 years of research involving these professionals and researchers, with the aim of refine and the existing data regarding the species known as "Katsuwonus pelamis" or Skipjack tuna, one of the most valuable species for the fishing industry. The main goal of these texts is to present to the general public and interested parties, grounded information on the importance of sustainable fishing in Brazil, mainly in relation to the valuable species Skipjack tuna, in Rio de Janeiro.

Book Fish Karyotypes

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ryoichi Arai
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2011-06-26
  • ISBN : 4431538771
  • Pages : 345 pages

Download or read book Fish Karyotypes written by Ryoichi Arai and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-26 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the largest group of extant vertebrates, fish offer an almost limitless number of striking examples of evolutionary adaptation to environmental and biotic selection pressure. The most diverse of all vertebrate groups, the higher taxa of fish traditionally have been classified by morphology and paleontology, with a much smaller input of cytogenetic information. DNA sequence data are exerting an increasingly strong influence on modern fish systematics, challenging the classification of numerous higher taxa ranging from genera to orders. The most fruitful approach, however, involves synthetic analyses of morphology, molecular phylogenetics, comparative karyology, and genome size. Karyotypes of more than 3400 species/subspecies are arranged here by fish systematics and include a list of genome size, sex chromosomes, B chromosomes, polyploidy, and locality of material fish, among others. This volume enables both beginners and advanced researchers to survey the existing literature and facilitates the implementation of an integrative approach to fish systematics. The first book on fish chromosomes in nearly 15 years, it is also the most comprehensive.

Book Continental Shelves of the World

Download or read book Continental Shelves of the World written by F.L. Chiocci and published by Geological Society of London. This book was released on 2014-11-06 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world's continental shelves are the sites of vast resources of food, energy and minerals, the exploitation of which is continuously increasing. Fluctuating global sea levels throughout the Quaternary period produced multiple transgressive and regressive cycles that profoundly affected and shaped these shelves. The complex interactions among climate, sea level, tectonics, oceanography and sediment input have formed distinctive sediment packages on each shelf and provide a guide to the interpretation of older shelf sequences throughout the geological record. This Memoir compiles studies on 23 selected shelves from all the continents, focusing on their evolution and examining the patterns of sedimentation during the past approximately 125 000 years. In addition to providing basic background information for each area, the chapters consider specific aspects of continental shelf research, from seismic stratigraphy to geomorphology, from palaeoceanography to palaeo sea-level reconstruction and from palaeontology to geochemistry.

Book Identifying Marine Diatoms and Dinoflagellates

Download or read book Identifying Marine Diatoms and Dinoflagellates written by Grethe R. Hasle and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-01-25 with total page 613 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Identifying Marine Diatoms and Dinoflagellates is the second identification manual created from the literature developed for the Advanced International Phytoplankton Course. This version, enlarged and modified from the earlier literature, deals with the identification of marine diatoms and dinoflagellates. The data and references presented here should allow the researcher to pursue the question of valid species and how they can be verified. This volume comprises three chapters, beginning with an introductory chapter discussing the subject's historical background. The next chapter focuses on marine diatoms, providing an introduction that describes their general characteristics, life cycles, morphology and terminology, and classification. It is followed by a discussion of genera represented in marine plankton, a description of taxa, and methodology. The third and final chapter focuses on dinoflagellates, beginning with an introduction that describes their general characteristics and eukaryotic unicells. The discussion continues with terminology and morphology, identification of species, techniques for preparation of dinoflagellates for identification, common dinoflagellate synonyms, and an index of dinoflagellate taxa. This book will be of interest to practitioners in the fields of biology, zoology, and environmental protection.

In this volume his friends and colleagues pay tribute to his legacy. Included are an extensive biography and over 50 papers mainly dealing with systematic and taxonomic issues, which emanate from his knowledge and inspiration.

Book Hakes

Download or read book Hakes written by Hugo Arancibia and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-12-21 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The species of hake, making up the genus Merluccius, are commercially important and currently largely over exploited, with many stocks badly depleted and showing only limited signs of recovery. From the end of the 1990s, concepts such as sustainability, ecosystem-based approaches to fisheries management, a code for the responsible conduct for fisheries, governance and others have emerged or have been considered by politicians, stakeholders and society. Moreover, new tools for stock assessment have been developed. But many hake stocks of the genus Merluccius show no sign of restoration. Hakes: Biology and Exploitation brings together a wealth of important information on the biology and exploitation of hake and hoki stocks around the world. Each chapter provides an overview of the fisheries of each species in an ecological and environmental context, looking at stock distribution, characteristics of the environment, life history, reproduction, diet, growth, mortality, pricing and markets of each geographical region and the hake species found there. With chapters written by regional experts on hake species and included within Wiley-Blackwell’s prestigious Fish and Aquatic Resources Series, Hakes: Biology and Exploitation provides up-to-date and comparative information, including new approaches to fisheries management, for all those involved in fisheries management, aquatic ecology and biological sciences.
