The discussions covered the genesis and implications of deposit insurance cum fractional reserve requirements; the experience with market-based regulations in Chile and in New Zealand and the narrow banking proposal (100 percent reserves on demand deposits), with a discussion of how Argentina's path towards this type of banking system helped this country weather its 1995 banking crisis. Contributors include central bank presidents (Argentina, Chile, Costa Rica and Nicaragua) and directors (Colombia); heads of regulatory agencies and banking centers (Bolivia and Mexico); rating agencies (Brazil), private bankers, World Bank economists, and academics.

Book Local Energy Governance

Download or read book Local Energy Governance written by Magali Dreyfus and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-03-30 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local Energy Governance: Opportunities and Challenges for Renewable and Decentralised Energy in France and Japan examines the extent of the energy transition taking place at a local level in France and Japan, two countries that share ambitious targets regarding the reduction of GHG emissions, their share of renewable energy and their degree of market liberalization. This book observes local energy policies and initiatives and applies an institutional and legal analysis to help identify barriers but also opportunities in the development of renewable energies in the territories. The book will highlight governance features that incubate energy transition at the local level through interdisciplinary contributions that offer legal, political, sociological and technological perspectives. Overall, the book will draw conclusions that will also be informative for other countries aiming at promoting renewable energies. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of energy policy and energy governance.

Book Energy Systems

    Book Details:
  • Author : Renaud Gicquel
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2021-08-05
  • ISBN : 1000402231
  • Pages : 873 pages

Download or read book Energy Systems written by Renaud Gicquel and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2021-08-05 with total page 873 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considered as particularly difficult by generations of students and engineers, thermodynamics applied to energy systems can now be taught with an original instruction method. Energy Systems applies a completely different approach to the calculation, application and theory of multiple energy conversion technologies. It aims to create the reader’s foundation for understanding and applying the design principles to all kinds of energy cycles, including renewable energy. Proven to be simpler and more reflective than existing methods, it deals with energy system modeling, instead of the thermodynamic foundations, as the primary objective. Although its style is drastically different from other textbooks, no concession is made to coverage: with encouraging pace, the complete range from basic thermodynamics to the most advanced energy systems is addressed. The accompanying ThermoptimTM portal (http://thermoptim.org) presents the software and manuals (in English and French) to solve over 200 examples, and programming and design tools for exercises of all levels of complexity. The portal explains to the user how to build appropriate models to bridge the technological reality with the theoretical basis of energy engineering. Offering quick overviews through e-learning modules moreover, the portal is user-friendly and enables users to quickly improve their proficiency. Students can freely download the Thermoptim modeling software demo version (available in seven languages), and extended options are available to lecturers. A professional edition is also available and has been adopted by many companies and research institutes worldwide (www.s4e2.com). This volume is intended as a textbook for courses in applied thermodynamics, energy systems, energy conversion and thermal engineering taken by senior undergraduate and graduate-level students in mechanical, energy, chemical and petroleum engineering. Students should already have taken a first-year course in thermodynamics. The refreshing approach and exceptionally rich coverage make it a great reference tool for researchers and professionals as well.

Book The context of REDD in the Democratic Republic of Congo Drivers agents and institutions

Download or read book The context of REDD in the Democratic Republic of Congo Drivers agents and institutions written by Augustin M. Mpoyi and published by CIFOR. This book was released on 2013 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviewing the conditions in which the Reduction of Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) mechanism is being established in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is part of Component 1 of the Global Comparative Study on REDD+ (GCS-REDD) being conducted by the Center for International Forestry Research. The overall aim of this global study is to provide decision-makers, practitioners, donors and the scientific community with reliable information on the dynamics of national actions related to the REDD+ mechanism. Discussions on REDD originally seemed to focus on the construction of a global structure and the establishment of a multilateral instrument to replace the Kyoto Protocol. But at the 14th Conference of Parties (CoP 14), held in Poznan in 2008, discussions on the reliability of REDD+ focused more on the dynamics of national- and local-level actions and brought out the need to better understand, analyze and explain the national institutional context of REDD+ development. Subsequently, this review used the extractive approaches. The first inputs were reports, articles, books and documents on the DRC that were directly related to forest management, socioeconomic and political institutions, etc., whether published or not. Because of the diversity of sources, the quantitative data sometimes seem contradictory and conflictual. In the next step, semi-structured interviews were held with experts working in the forestry sector and data were obtained from the participants’ observations. Since this analysis covers the period between May 2011 and June 2012 actions in the field and the institutions after those dates were not included.

Book Energy Transitions

Download or read book Energy Transitions written by Olivier Labussière and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book elucidates what it means to transition to alternative sources of energy and discusses the potential for this energy transition to be a more democratic process. The book dynamically describes a recent sociotechnical study of a number of energy transitions occurring in several countries - France, Germany and Tunisia, and involving different energy technologies - including solar, on/off-shore wind, smart grids, biomass, low-energy buildings, and carbon capture and storage. Drawing on a pragmatist tradition of social inquiry, the authors examine the consequences of energy transition processes for the actors and entities that are affected by them, as well as the spaces for political participation they offer. This critical inquiry is organised according to foundational categories that have defined the energy transition - ‘renewable’ energy resources, markets, economic instruments, technological demonstration, spatiality (‘scale’) and temporality (‘horizon(s)’). Using a set of select case studies, this book systematically investigates the role these categories play in the current developments in energy transitions.

Book Forest People Interfaces

    Book Details:
  • Author : Bas Arts
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-05-22
  • ISBN : 9086867499
  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book Forest People Interfaces written by Bas Arts and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-05-22 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims at both academics and professionals in the field of forest-people interfaces. It takes the reader on a journey through four major themes that have emerged since the initiation of 'social forestry' in the 1970s: non-timber forest products and agroforestry; community-based natural resource management; biocultural diversity; and forest governance. In so doing, the books offers a comprehensive and current review on social issues related to forests that other, more specialized publications, lack. It is also theory-rich, offering both mainstream and critical perspectives, and presents up-to-date empirical materials. Reviewing these four major research themes, the main conclusion of the book is that naïve optimism associated with forest-people interfaces should be tempered. The chapters show that economic development, political empowerment and environmental aims are not easily integrated. Hence local landscapes and communities are not as 'makeable' as is often assumed. Events that take place on other scales might intervene; local communities might not implement policies locally; and governance practices might empower governments more than communities. This all shows that we should go beyond community-based ideas and ideals, and look at practices on the ground.
