Book The Analysis and Softening of Boiler Water Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Analysis and Softening of Boiler Water Classic Reprint written by Edmund Wehrenfennig and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Analysis and Softening of Boiler-Water This work undertaken with the collaboration of a chemist is made necessary in consequence of numerous subsequent inquiries regarding the essay appearing in the Journal for the Advancement of Railway Interests (Organ fur die Fortschritte des Eisenbahnwesens) of the year 1893 On the Examination and Softening of Boiler Feed-water (Ueber die Untersuchung und das Weichmachen des Kesselspeisewassers). In the above new work it was sought to show the chemical procedure on which water purification is based, and exhibit a short and simple water analysis, and method of calculating the quantities of reagents required for water softening to be used in practice. In it the information most vitally needed for practical water analysis and purification is reiterated and the other results of my previous essay are presented for use. Besides this, the report on feed-water was written opportunely by the author for the commission of Austrian Railway Managers at the Railway Exposition (Paris, 1900), and as a result it was followed by the Report of the Technical Committee of the Society of German Railway Managers which was drawn up in the year 1902. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boiler Water Analysis The above mentioned compounds of calcium and magnew sium are the cause of most of the trouble with boiler waters, which deposit scale and they are also the cause of a great loss in the thermal efficiency of a steam power plant. Rankine states that if the conduction of heat of wrought iron is taken as 1, that of corper is of slate of brick of calcium carbonate of calcium sulphate Experiments run under the dire0 tion of Breckenridge show that the loss in efficiency due to a scale thick was per cent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on Boiler Testing Stokgng. T - E - In crde1 'to illustrate the personal element iirtrcduced in good and bad stoking, we may quote the competition which was carried out at Messrs. Davey Brothers', of Sheffield. Five stokers were made to fire. The same boiler with, the same coal and with the steam pressure about the same. The best stoker was able to obtain an evaporation of 91b. Of water per pound of coal, the worst evaporation being lb. Per pound of coal. The difference is here 22 per cent. The opportunities afforded for in creasing the efficiency of the: boilers. Were, in this. Instance limited. A well-laid fire, which by constant attention is prevented from. Burning into holes, is one of the chief items in securing a high. Evaporation. Keeping the fire bars clean, and regulating the dampers for a maximum quantity of air just after firing contributes greatly to high efficiency. Beyond these points. There is little opportunity for exercising skill in stoking, and yet these tests show clearly how very important the simple operations involved in firing a boiler become. The very simplicity is one cause for neglect. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Boiler Chemistry and Feed Water Supplies Classic Reprint

Download or read book Boiler Chemistry and Feed Water Supplies Classic Reprint written by James Hugh Paul and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-15 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boiler Chemistry and Feed Water Supplies Although the internal combustion engine may have a much extended future it does not at present compete with steam in large power plants. The steam boiler up to now is by no means a diminishing quantity, and any chemical knowledge which will increase its efficiency, preserve its life, and save coal deserves thought and consideration. Coal in the future is most likely to'be valued for its chemical products now destroyed in the furnace. Coal will have to be economized, and one way out of the difficulty will be to remove its valuable volatile products by distillation and use the residual cokes for steam-raising purposes. This may present difficulties at first, but these difficulties are not insuperable, and the same skill which has brought the furnace to its present state of perfection will be able to adapt it to the altered conditions. If it be more beneficial to the human race to utilize benzole for the manufacture of dyes and drugs than to burn it for raising steam, then the valuable benzole will be removed and the carbonaceous residues become the fuel of the future. Many of the chemical reactions herein described have been gathered from a long practical experience with high-pressure boilers working under varied-circumstances and conditions, and the analyses given in the text are original analyses made in the course of a somewhat extended practice. So far as possible, technical language and expressions have been avoided. The facts stated and the conclusions drawn have been described in the language of everyday life, so that those without more than a very limited acquaintance with chemistry may be able to understand and appreciate the results, and a chapter has been added explaining and illustra ting such technical expressions as it has been found necessary to use. Book Fuel Water and Gas Analysis

Download or read book Fuel Water and Gas Analysis written by John B. C. Kershaw and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fuel, Water and Gas Analysis: For Steam Users Team-users have shown a tendency in the past to neglect the boiler-house for the engine-room, and have concentrated their efforts for the improvement of the efficiency of the plant almost exclusively upon the latter. A study of the losses incurred during the conversion of the thermal energy stored in coal into the thermal energy of steam, will show that it is in the boiler-house that the greater preventable losses are occurring, and that the ratio may be expressed by the numbers 25 and 5. It is however, now beginning to be recognized that a scientifically managed boiler-house is a sine qua non for the economic generation of steam power, and considerable attention is being given by steam-engineers to this portion of their power generating plant. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Simple Water Testing Natural water is never found pure. Rain water is the purest natural water. As the rain falls it washes the gases and dust from the air. Upon striking the ground, it takes up impurities from the soil, the rocks and plants. Part of the Water flows on [the surface, absorbing more impurities. On filtering through the ground, the water loses most of its organic impurities which were absorbed from vegetable and animal de posits on the surface. As it does this, however, it also dissolves and absorbs mineral matter and gases. Since all boiler feed - water must necessarily con tain these impurities to, a greater or lesser extent, the engineer must know how to avoid same, and this book will tell you in a clear and practical way how to do it. It explains it all so clearly that you can analyze the water yourself, and be able to adopt proper remedies for counteracting the ill effects of such impurities. Book Water Analysis for Sanitary Purposes

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Water Analysis for Sanitary Purposes: Chemical and Biological The following pages, with the exception of the last two chapters, were originally compiled for use in the writer's classes, making as he believes a fitting conclusion to a year's work in General Chemistry and Qualitative Analysis by introducing the student to some of the processes of Quantitative Analysis. The work is given in the simplest form and does not even presuppose a knowledge of Qualitative Analysis. It has been successfully performed by a number of different classes and has been found not too difficult for the average student. Interest has always been aroused. In giving these pages to the public the writer hopes to serve his fellow teachers by saving them a large measure of the labor it has cost him to put the subject of water analysis in a form to be presented to young students. He trust also that physicians may find these pages useful. The busy physician feels the lack of suitable simple processes for forming accurate judgement on the potableness of water. Book Boiler and Furnace Testing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Boiler and Furnace Testing Classic Reprint written by Rufus T. Strohm and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boiler and Furnace Testing A boiler test is necessary in order to determine how well the boiler is doing the work expected of it; that is to say, we must find out whether we are wasting coal in making steam and how much this waste may be. Such a test may be made to discover the efficiency of the boiler, or the quantity of water it is evaporating, or the cost of evaporating 1,000 pounds of water. The United States Fuel Administration recommends that every boiler plant have some means of daily checking the efficiency of the boiler and furnace. The simplest and best way of finding out how efficiently the boiler is working is to make an evaporation test, as described in this bulletin. All the necessary records can be made automatically with suitable instruments, although in many small plants the coal must be weighed on ordinary scales. The efficiency of the furnace can be found by making analyses of the flue gases. (See Bulletin No. 2 of the United States Fuel Administration.) Too many engineers and firemen have the idea that they are not fitted to make boiler tests. This is altogether wrong. Any man who can weigh water and coal and read steam gages and thermometers is able to do the work required in making a boiler test for evaporation or efficiency. Such a test requires a knowledge of the following: 1. The total weight of coal used. 2. The total weight of water fed to and evaporated by the boiler. 3. The average temperature of the feed water. 4. The average steam pressure in the boiler. If these four items are known, a series of simple calculations will show how much water is being evaporated per pound of coal, and the efficiency of the boiler and furnace. To make a test, the following apparatus and instruments are necessary: 1. Scales to weigh the coal. 2. Apparatus to weigh or measure the feed water. 3. Thermometers to take feed-water temperature. 4. Gages to indicate steam pressure. A boiler test to be of value should extend over a period of at least eight hours. The longer the test the more accurate the results. This book was released on 2019-02 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relation of the Mineral Content of Boiler Waters to That of the Scale Formed: Thesis In all modern industries where steam power is used, the problem of a suitable supply of boiler water is a very serious one. Especially is this true in the Middle West and.western States where almost every water is Open to some objections When used in boilers. These objections are of three kinds, and are Corrosion, Formation of Scale, and.foaming. There are few waters either sur face or underground, which do not have one or more of these bad qualities. A corrosive water is probably the most objectionable. But corrosive waters are not so common as scale-forming waters; it may be said that every water except rain water and distilled water may form an incrustant when used in a boiler, the character and amount of the scale formed depending upon the water.
