Book Boiler Furnaces Classic Reprint

Download or read book Boiler Furnaces Classic Reprint written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boiler Furnaces Peat consists of decayed vegetable matter and earth, and is found in bogs and swamps. It is cut out and dried, and sometimes pulverized and compressed into blocks before burning. It gives an intense heat, burning with a short blue flame which changes to yellow when the grate spaces become filled with embers. A comparison of its heating value with other forms of fuel may be made by assuming one pound of air-dried peat to contain about T. U. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Efficient Boiler Management: With Notes on the Operation of Reheating Furnaces IN deciding to write this small treatise the author was prompted to do so after having carefully perused the various articles in the Technical Press, pointing out the wasteful and inefficient manner in which the great majority of steam-raising plants are being worked in this country. Although these articles dealt in very great detail with the results that have been found on testing a large number of plants, yet there was practically no advice given as to how to set to work to improve matters. Book Principles of Combustion in the Steam Boiler Furnace Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Combustion in the Steam Boiler Furnace Classic Reprint written by Arthur D. Pratt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-07 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Combustion in the Steam Boiler Furnace Specific fuel, and if such function is to be properly fulfilled, it is essential that the furnace Operator understand the broader principles involved in combustion. Unfortunately, from the standpoint of efficient steam generation, the statement is too frequently accepted as true that theoretical generalizations and mathematical formulae are of but little value to the operating engineer. To an extent, such statements may be true, but on the other hand it is to be remembered that combustion is purely a chemical phenomenon and as such can be properly investigated and controlled only by chemical means. Experience resulting from the cut and try methods of ordinary actual practise in the burning of individual fuels is unquestionably an important factor in the bringing about of efficient furnace results, but it is obvious that such results will be most readily secured when this experience is combined with a full knowledge of the theory of combustion and the proper application of the available methods used in obtaining combustion data. Further, the importance of such knowledge is today greater than it has ever been. Most apparatus for the generation of power has reached a state of development where there is but little likelihood of any great in crease in economy. The generally accepted types of steam boiler used in present day power plant practise have the inherent ability to absorb heat efficiently and from this standpoint may be included with the apparatus from which much more cannot be expected. If we accept this statement as true, the efficient generation of steam in the boiler proper becomes in reality a question of efficient combustion, and it is this phase of boiler practise the efficient generation of heat in the boiler furnace - in which there is the greatest and in fact the only field for appreciable improvement. Book Boiler and Furnace Testing Classic Reprint

Download or read book Boiler and Furnace Testing Classic Reprint written by Rufus T. Strohm and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boiler and Furnace Testing A boiler test is necessary in order to determine how well the boiler is doing the work expected of it; that is to say, we must find out whether we are wasting coal in making steam and how much this waste may be. Such a test may be made to discover the efficiency of the boiler, or the quantity of water it is evaporating, or the cost of evaporating 1,000 pounds of water. The United States Fuel Administration recommends that every boiler plant have some means of daily checking the efficiency of the boiler and furnace. The simplest and best way of finding out how efficiently the boiler is working is to make an evaporation test, as described in this bulletin. All the necessary records can be made automatically with suitable instruments, although in many small plants the coal must be weighed on ordinary scales. The efficiency of the furnace can be found by making analyses of the flue gases. (See Bulletin No. 2 of the United States Fuel Administration.) Too many engineers and firemen have the idea that they are not fitted to make boiler tests. This is altogether wrong. Any man who can weigh water and coal and read steam gages and thermometers is able to do the work required in making a boiler test for evaporation or efficiency. Such a test requires a knowledge of the following: 1. The total weight of coal used. 2. The total weight of water fed to and evaporated by the boiler. 3. The average temperature of the feed water. 4. The average steam pressure in the boiler. If these four items are known, a series of simple calculations will show how much water is being evaporated per pound of coal, and the efficiency of the boiler and furnace. To make a test, the following apparatus and instruments are necessary: 1. Scales to weigh the coal. 2. Apparatus to weigh or measure the feed water. 3. Thermometers to take feed-water temperature. 4. Gages to indicate steam pressure. A boiler test to be of value should extend over a period of at least eight hours. The longer the test the more accurate the results. Book Boilers and Furnaces Considered in Their Relations to Steam Engineering Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Boilers and Furnaces Considered in Their Relations to Steam Engineering The limitations imposed as to the size of the completed volume pre vented the introduction of subject matter or illustrations relating to the early history and development of steam boilers, as well as illustrated reference to some of the more recent examples of design and construo tion. This increase in subject matter could only have been accomplished by adding to the number of pages or by reduction in the size of the en gravings. N 0 doubt many of the latter could have been slightly reduced without detriment, but it was thought that a fewer number of clearly executed fundamental details would be Of more value to a designer or student than a larger number wanting in proper mechanical execution or clearness of detail. After all, it will be seen that the omission is not so much in types of boilers, to which considerable space has been given, as it has been in the variations of these types. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Warm-Blast Steam-Boiler Furnace: A Report Upon a Series of Trials of an Apparatus for Transferring a Part of the Heat of Escaping Flue-Gases to the Furnace by Warming the Entering Air The teachings of these experiments are little less valuable on their negative than on their positive side. It is hardly less worth while to know the absolute limitations of economy in coal combas tion to know what cannot be done, though quacks promise never so largely, as to learn by what means some part of the important loss of heat inevitable with existing arrangements, may be arrested and put to use at reasonable cost and without undue trouble or in convenience. Book Hand Firing Soft Coal Under Power Plant Boilers Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hand Firing Soft Coal Under Power Plant Boilers Classic Reprint written by Henry Kreisinger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hand Firing Soft Coal Under Power-Plant Boilers The Bureau -of Mines is making tests to determine how fuels can be used most efficiently for different purposes. This report contains descriptions of methods of firing soft coal under power-plant boilers and of methods of handling fire so as to have the least smoke and to get the most heat from the fuel. These descriptions are followed by discussions of the process of combustion and of the principal heat losses in an average power plant, because these discussions help to explain the reasons for the methods that are recommended. These methods have been tested in many plants by the writer when he was employed as fuel engineer by a large coal company. The descriptions and discussions are so arranged that each chapter is a complete unit and can be read by itself. Flue-gas analysis and its use in the operation of boiler furnaces are not treated in this paper, but will be discussed in another paper to be published by the Bureau of Mines. This paper seeks to meet the needs of the men, many without a technical education, who are employed in small plants of to horsepower capacity. For this reason the language used is plain and simple, and technical terms have been avoided as far as possible. However, it is difficult to describe a chemical process, such as the combustion of coal, without using chemical terms, but such terms as are used are explained in the text and also in the short glossary at the end of the report. Book Factors Governing the Combustion of Coal in Boiler Furnaces

Download or read book Factors Governing the Combustion of Coal in Boiler Furnaces written by J. K. Clement and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Factors Governing the Combustion of Coal in Boiler Furnaces: A Preliminary Report As a part of its investigation of the fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States and of methods of utilizing these fuels with greater efficiency, the Bureau of Mines has undertaken an investiga tion of the fundamental principles underlying the combustion of coal in boiler furnaces. A knowledge of these principles is requisite in order that furnaces may be properly designed and intelligently Operated. The efficient use of coal is dependent on proper furnace design as well as on proper firing and control of the furnace. Many furnaces are built without regard to the special characteristics of the fuel to be used, with the result that for years fuel has been burned in an inefficient and wasteful manner, and so as to aggravate the smoke nuisance.
