Book excerpt: When the classical scholar Phineas Ort, Bogus U.’s first choice for president, disappears, the search committee decides to recruit a hit man to keep the fractious faculty in line. Phineas has been abducted by the Robaccia gang, who aim to install their own candidate in the president’s office to cash in on Bogus U.’s well-known corruption. Christy Mahon, a former member of the Robaccia gang, now on the lam for having crossed its boss, Brooklyn Benny, has landed a job at Bogus U. as a janitor. Listening through a heating vent, he overhears the search committee’s deliberations and decides to interview for the job, which he ultimately lands in a funny and subversive chain of events. Laura Favoloso, who has her own ties to the mob, works at Bogus U. and provides Christy with an insider’s view of its inner workings and lower depths. Under Laura’s influence and tutelage, Christy reluctantly begins to transform into a new man, and tries to institute rigorous academic standards, raising the ire and exciting the violent tendencies of the student population. But the student body is not the only quarter from which Christy must guard himself from mortal harm—a hit has been ordered on Christy, and he must use his old street smarts as well as his newly acquired political savvy to survive and protect his legacy.

Book The Impossible Takes Longer

Download or read book The Impossible Takes Longer written by David Pratt and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2009-05-26 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Witty, incisive observations on such universally meaningful topics as courage and compassion by many of the greatest minds of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Since 1901, the Nobel Prize has been the hallmark of genius, but Nobel laureates tend to be more than merely brilliant-their idealism, courage, and concern for humanity have also made them sources of inspiration and wisdom. Contrary to the notion that geniuses are absentminded eccentrics who lead solitary lives, many Nobel laureates have been social activists and political leaders, and some have been polymaths whose interests and talents were diverse, such as Philip Noel-Baker, winner of the 1959 Peace prize, who ran in three Olympic Games. Most of the quotations have never been anthologized previously. There is a section of short biographical sketches of each of the roughly 250 laureates quoted in the book, a brief history of the Nobel Prize, and a complete list of every Nobel laureate through 2006. The Impossible Takes Longer is a remarkable assemblage of insightful, thought-provoking, sometimes humorous statements by some of the world's wisest men and women.

Book The Water Method Man

  • Author : John Irving
  • Publisher : Ballantine Books
  • Release : 2018-05-15
  • ISBN : 1984800078
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book The Water Method Man written by John Irving and published by Ballantine Books. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “John Irving, it is abundantly clear, is a true artist.”—Los Angeles Times Fred "Bogus" Trumper has troubles. A divorced, broke graduate student of Old Norse in 1970s New York, Trumper is a wayward knight-errant in the battle of the sexes and the pursuit of happiness: His ex-wife has moved in with his childhood best friend, his life is the subject of a tell-all movie, and his chronic urinary tract infection requires surgery. Trumper is determined to change. There's only one problem: it seems the harder he tries to alter his adolescent ways, the more he is drawn to repeating the mistakes of the past. . . . Written when Irving was twenty-nine, Trumper's tale of woe is told with all the wit and humor that would become Irving's trademark. “Three or four times as funny as most novels.”—The New Yorker Praise for The Water-Method Man “Friendship, marriage, and family are his primary themes, but at that blundering level of life where mishap and folly—something close to joyful malice—perpetually intrude and distrupt, often fatally. Life, in [John] Irving's fiction, is always under siege. Harm and disarray are daily fare, as if the course of love could not run true. . . . Irving's multiple manner . . . his will to come at the world from different directions, is one of the outstandint traits of The World According to Garp, but this remarkable flair for . . . stories inside stories . . . isalready handled with mastery . . . and with a freedom almost wanton in The Water-Method Man [which is Garp's predecessor by six years].”—Terrence Des Pres “Brutal reality and hallucination, comedy and pathos. A rich, unified tapestry.”—Time

Book excerpt: Ninety percent of the federal laws, resolutions, and appropriations pass or fail by a handful of votes. This means a small dedicated group of Congressmen, from both parties, in both Houses, joined in a secret society, could, by their patronage, influence, committee decisions, or floor votes, control the flow of America's monies. And by parceling the votes among its members, leave no footprint behind. When Alexander Judd stumbles upon the possibility of such a society, and sets out to investigate it, he quickly finds himself staring into the barrel of a gun locked in the hands of a naked woman. The trash-talking Elfy Cane. Who is wanted for murder. Cut the guy's heart out. Then Elfy kidnaps him. And linked to her by association, Alex now finds the police are after him. What more could a slightly out-of-shape widower ask? Well, falling in love with the lady certainly wasn't one of them. Nor was having Elfy end up in the clutches of a shadowy Church of the Dark Light, a secret coven meeting in the bowels of that great building atop Jenkins Heights. Better known today... as Capitol Hill.

Book Come As You Are Revised and Updated

Download or read book Come As You Are Revised and Updated written by Emily Nagoski and published by Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 2021-03-02 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revised and updated edition of Emily Nagoski’s game-changing New York Times bestseller Come As You Are, featuring new information and research on mindfulness, desire, and pleasure that will radically transform your sex life. For much of the 20th and 21st centuries, women’s sexuality was an uncharted territory in science, studied far less frequently—and far less seriously—than its male counterpart. That is, until Emily Nagoski’s Come As You Are, which used groundbreaking science and research to prove that the most important factor in creating and sustaining a sex life filled with confidence and joy is not what the parts are or how they’re organized but how you feel about them. In the years since the book’s initial publication, countless women have learned through Nagoski’s accessible and informative guide that things like stress, mood, trust, and body image are not peripheral factors in a woman’s sexual wellbeing; they are central to it—and that even if you don’t always feel like it, you are already sexually whole by just being yourself. This revised and updated edition continues that mission with new information and advanced research, demystifying and decoding the science of sex so that everyone can create a better sex life and discover more pleasure than you ever thought possible.

Book excerpt: The Basics of Cyber Safety: Computer and Mobile Device Safety Made Easy presents modern tactics on how to secure computer and mobile devices, including what behaviors are safe while surfing, searching, and interacting with others in the virtual world. The book's author, Professor John Sammons, who teaches information security at Marshall University, introduces readers to the basic concepts of protecting their computer, mobile devices, and data during a time that is described as the most connected in history. This timely resource provides useful information for readers who know very little about the basic principles of keeping the devices they are connected to—or themselves—secure while online. In addition, the text discusses, in a non-technical way, the cost of connectedness to your privacy, and what you can do to it, including how to avoid all kinds of viruses, malware, cybercrime, and identity theft. Final sections provide the latest information on safe computing in the workplace and at school, and give parents steps they can take to keep young kids and teens safe online. Provides the most straightforward and up-to-date guide to cyber safety for anyone who ventures online for work, school, or personal use Includes real world examples that demonstrate how cyber criminals commit their crimes, and what users can do to keep their data safe
