Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The RAF's Fortress Mk.Is were unique in at least one way, they were the first Boeing B-17s to see action during WW2. This was made possible by two different but complementary requirements. The British were looking for another way to bomb Germany and Occupied Europe by day and the Americans would be pleased to see how their bombing strategy would work out, and the limits of this strategy, which the B-17 had been designed to perform. The Americans, who were always in the background of the European evaluation, and also in the Middle East, played a vital role in the RAF's operational trials in 1941. The results were poor and most of the lessons learned were simply ignored but here in 40 pages the full career of the Fortress I is recalled. Illustrated with 35 photos, some seen for the first time, this booklet gives historians all they need to know about the Fortress I.

Book The Boeing Fortress Mk II Mk III

Download or read book The Boeing Fortress Mk II Mk III written by Phil H. Listemann and published by Philedition. This book was released on 2017-06-05 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fortress Mk.II and Mk.III were the equivalent of the USAAF's B-17E/F and G. The Fortress Mk.I was the B-17C as featured in 'SQUADRONS! No. 4'. The Fortress Mk.I was only used in small numbers (20), but, for the British, it was the first step leading to the large scale introduction of the Fortress to Bomber Command. But that never happened and all the orders were consequently cancelled after the experiment of the Fortress Mk I. However, the RAF found a second interest in the Fortress while the Battle of the Atlantic was raging. Indeed in the meantime, trials of the Fortress in Coastal Command proved satisfactory and, as this Command was looking for long-range land-based patrol aircraft, the Fortress was requested to equiq some Coastal Command squadrons. Later in the war, the Fortress would return in the Bomber Command acting as an ECM aircraft from 1944 until the end of the war, while some others would be used by the Meteorological squadrons by 1945. The operational usage of the Fortress II and III in the RAF is here told in 70 pages, illustrated with 50 photographs and 6 colour profiles. The unexpected usage of the Fortress of the RCAF between 1944 and 1946 is also included in this study.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The B-17 Flying Fortress is one of the most iconic aircraft in aviation history. Through a broad range of photos gathered from around the world, this book, the first of a two-volume series, chronicles the design, development, and wartime use of the early models of the Flying Fortress, from the ill-fated experimental model 299 through the B-17D, including the famous "Swoose." These early models are distinguished by their narrow fuselage, art deco styling, and a small, "shark fin" tail. A second volume will continue the B-17 story with the large-tail later models, B-17E through B-17H. The story of these iconic WWII aircraft is told through carefully researched photos, many of which have never before been published, and which are reproduced in remarkable clarity. Large, clear photos, coupled with descriptive and informative captions, unlock the secrets of this aircraft.

Book Dornier Do 17

Download or read book Dornier Do 17 written by Chris Goss and published by Crecy Publishing. This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed both as a military and civil aircraft, the Dornier Do 17 'Flying Pencil', so called because of its slender fuselage, was one of three twin-engine medium bombers in service with the Luftwaffe at the start of WWII. Its service with the Legion Condor during the Spanish Civil War, mainly in the reconnaissance role, so impressed the Luftwaffe that high priority was allocated to the aircraft as both a bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. The Do 17 was loved by its crews. It served over Poland, France and the Low Countries, Britain, the Balkans, Greece and the Soviet Union, often without escort and against increasing and improved fighter opposition. Despite a comparatively light bomb-load and limited range, the ultimate version, Do 17Z, possessed good maneuverability and during the Luftwaffe's campaign against England in 1940, it was preferred for low-level attacks on British airfields and installations, though its lack of protection made it vulnerable. Though production ceased in October 1940, the sleek Do 17 could be found on the strength of Luftwaffe units to the end of the war operating as a glider tug, night reconnaissance platform, research aircraft and trainer. In this book Luftwaffe historian, Chris Goss, recounts the operational history of the Do 17, perhaps the least understood and often forgotten of the Luftwaffe's medium bombers.

Download or read book Fortress Mk I Combat Log written by Hugh Harkins and published by Centurion Publishing. This book was released on 2014-09-02 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: B-17C - Fortress MK.I The purpose of this volume is to provide a comprehensive detailed study of the operational and combat operations of the RAF's Boeing Fortress MK.I (B-17C) long-range bombers which conducted a high altitude daylight bombing campaign over North West Europe and Norway during July, August and September 1941. The volume covers Bomber Commands operational situation leading up to summer 1941 and details the early model Boeing B-17's including the B-17C, 20 of which were transferred to the RAF as Fortress MK.I bombers. The formation of No.90 Squadron RAF and the training and preparations for operations, including the transfer of USAAC ground and air crew which continued to operate with 90 Squadron throughout the bombing campaign. Although no USAAC personnel flew operational missions, the Corp suffered one of the Squadrons earliest casualties in a non-operational Fortress loss, and a gentleman from the American Sperry Bomb Sight Company flew one operational mission as bomb aimer. The bombing campaign is described in detail with every operational sortie detailed, including targets, aircraft flown, weapons dropped, aircrew, and combats with German fighters; a number of Fortress I's being shot down. A brief description of the genesis and development of the B-17 is laid down, but the volume is not intended to be a comprehensive monograph on that subject. The volume is copiously supported by a wealth of operational documents including Squadron Narratives and Squadron and Group Combat Reports, many of which are reproduced verbatim. Operational documents have been tied up against German records whenever possible.
