Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bodybuilding is not just about lifting weights and getting your body bulky. Bodybuilding is a sport that originated back in Europe during the 19th century which was more publicized by photography. There were pictures of body builders being sent to be used for promoting products so that people would buy them. The sport of bodybuilding for women started in the 1960s, but the criteria for judging during the first contest for females were all based on the muscular development. This began with the U.S. Women's National Physique Championship back in 1978. This is the one that started it all for female bodybuilding.

Book Strong and Hard Women

Download or read book Strong and Hard Women written by Tanya Bunsell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-12 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Females with large muscles evoke strong reactions from men and women, often involving disgust, discomfort, anger and threat. The controversial nature of female bodybuilding has caused a significant rupture on feminist ground. Whilst proponents claim that female bodybuilding is a way of empowering and liberating women, others see it as a form of corporeal entrapment. This book investigates the controversy. Do women who pump iron resist physical restrictions of imposed femininity, or are they engaged in an ultimately oppressive quest for ‘perfect bodies’? In an original two year ethnographic study based in the South of England, Tanya Bunsell immersed herself into the world of female bodybuilders. By mapping these extraordinary women’s lives, the research illuminates the pivotal spaces and essential lived experiences that make up the female bodybuilder. Whilst the women appear to be embarking on an ‘empowering’ radical body project for themselves, the consequences of their activity remains culturally ambivalent. This research exposes the ‘Janus-faced’ nature of female bodybuilding, exploring the ways in which the women negotiate, accommodate and resist pressures to engage in more orthodox and feminine activities and appearances. This book will be of interest to academics and students in the fields of gender studies, the sociology of sport, the body and research methodology.

Part group biography, part cultural history, Strong Like Her delves into the fascinating stories of our muscular foremothers. From the first female Olympian (who entered the chariot race through a loophole) to the circus stars who could lift their husbands above their heads and make it look like “a little light housework with a feather duster,” these brave and brawny women paved the way for the generations to follow. Filled with Sophy Holland’s beautiful portraits of some of today’s most awe-inspiring athletes, Strong Like Her celebrates strength in all its forms. Illuminating the lives and accomplishments of storied female sports stars—whose contributions to society go far beyond their entries in record books—Shapley challenges us to rethink everything we thought we knew about the power of women.

  • Release : 2015-01-08
  • ISBN : 1438454783

Download or read book Feminist Figure Girl written by Lianne McTavish and published by State University of New York Press. This book was released on 2015-01-08 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminist Figure Girl chronicles the transformation of art history professor Lianne McTavish, from a university professor into an extraordinarily tanned and crystal-encrusted bikini-wearing "figure girl."Figure competitions seek a softer appearance than traditional forms of bodybuilding but still require rigorous weightlifting, an extreme protein diet, and many hours of posing in high heels. While training for a figure show, McTavish combined autoethnographic methods, participant observation, and feminist theory to find new ways of thinking about physique culture and the female body. The author, who specializes in critical visual culture and the history of the body, explores such contemporary issues as body image, fat studies, identity politics, and "postfeminism," while rethinking fitness culture, diet regimes, feminist politics, reproductive activism, performance art, and the social function of photography. Written in a lively personal style reminiscent of McTavish's popular blog, she clearly explains the complex ideas stemming from the theoretical work of such writers as Judith Butler, Simone de Beauvoir, Michel Foucault, Iris Marion Young, Edmund Husserl, and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The book also includes many photos documenting McTavish's physical transformation.

Book The New Rules of Lifting for Women

Download or read book The New Rules of Lifting for Women written by Lou Schuler and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2008-12-26 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The New Rules of Lifting for Women, authors Lou Schuler, Cassandra Forsythe and Alwyn Cosgrove present a comprehensive strength, conditioning and nutrition plan destined to revolutionize the way women work out. All the latest studies prove that strength training, not aerobics, provides the key to losing fat and building a fit, strong body. This book refutes the misconception that women will "bulk up" if they lift heavy weights. Nonsense! It's tough enough for men to pack on muscle, and they have much more of the hormone necessary to build muscle: natural testosterone. Muscles need to be strengthened to achieve a lean, healthy look. Properly conditioned muscles increase metabolism and promote weight loss -- it's that simple. The program demands that women put down the "Barbie" weights, step away from the treadmill and begin a strength and conditioning regime for the natural athlete in every woman. The New Rules of Lifting for Women will change the way women see fitness, nutrition and their own bodies.

Book excerpt: Forget settling for the so-called "golden" years. Instead, join the platinum club! Membership is open to anyone, as long as you're willing to take care of your body and your health as you age and as you experience some of the best years of your life. Physique After 50 argues that physique training doesn’t have to end the moment you turn fifty. Aging is an important part of life, and this is the prime of your life. At the same time, as you age there are real physical and hormonal changes going on in your body. Being fifty is not the same as forty, so of course your exercise needs to account for this. Most younger fitness trainers out there just can’t appreciate what these aging-related changes mean for you and your training. Physique After 50 offers real-world, practical training advice from Coach Scott Abel. Scott himself is in his mid-fifties, and has experienced these aging-related changes firsthand, both with himself and with his one-on-one coaching clients. By using smart training strategies (and by leaving your ego at the door) you can look and feel great during what can be some of the most fulfilling decades of your life. You can feel physically younger even as you embrace the wisdom that comes with age. Physique After 50 book tells you how to do exactly that. Physique After 50 includes: ● How aging affects your fitness and training, and what to do about it. ● Three different workout programs geared specifically for the "Physique After 50" demographic. ● You can choose which of the three programs is right for you depending on whether you are a beginner, intermediate, or advanced trainee. (There is also advice on progressing from one program to the next.) ● Bodypart-specific training “tweaks” to avoid injuries (especially those "overuse" injuries that are often related to age). ● How to balance rest and recovery with training. ● “Forget About It” — what forms of training to ignore or simply stop using entirely as you age. ● What elements of the warmup are more important (and how most people do these things wrong). ● The hormonal realities of aging (for both men and women), and what that means for you and your training. Buy Physique After 50 and join the "Platinum club" today!
