Book excerpt: Art comes in many forms. The human body is a canvas, and as an undertaker, Harold considers himself an artist. His expertise is bringing the appearance of life back to the dead for their wakes. But when his ex-lovers start arriving in body bags, Harold believes he's receiving a message to create a new masterpiece. Rutger and Kandi also make their art with flesh. The duo found fame in the golden age of pornography, releasing huge hits in the '80s and living extravagant lives. Now under the pressure of a new market, one that craves more vile and taboo movies, Rutger hires Kandi once again. This time the job is to create the most shocking porno imaginable. They even draw in two curious teenagers, Toby and Jessica, whose cabin vacation has landed them in the wrong place at the wrong time. Attracted by all of these creations, a mysterious red dust surrounds these unique artists, bringing their worlds together. "I never knew something so twisted could turn me on so much!" -Tim Morse of Anal Cunt "Triana's words drip with grisly elegance. Even when he turned my stomach, I couldn't help craving more." -Jessica McHugh, author of The Train Derails in Boston "Triana delivers a glorious combination of sex, guts, and unexplainable supernatural strangeness." -Chad Stroup, author of Secrets of the Weird

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because clothing, food, and shelter are basic human needs, they provide excellent entries to cultural values and individual aesthetics. Everyone gets dressed every day, but body art has not received the attention it deserves as the most common and universal of material expressions of culture. The Grace of Four Moons aims to document the clothing decisions made by ordinary people in their everyday lives. Based on fieldwork conducted primarily in the city of Banaras, India, Pravina Shukla conceptualizes and realizes a total model for the study of body art—understood as all aesthetic modifications and supplementations to the body. Shukla urges the study of the entire process of body art, from the assembly of raw materials and the manufacture of objects, through their sale and the interactions between merchants and consumers, to the consumer's use of objects in creating personal decoration.

Book excerpt: The first book to celebrate the beautiful and provocative ways artists have represented, scrutinized and utilized the body over centuries. Body of Art is the first book to explore the various ways the human body has been both an inspiration and a medium for artists over hundreds of thousands of years. Unprecedented in its scope, it examines the many different manifestations of the body in art, from Anthony Gormley and Maya Lin sculptures to eight-armed Hindu gods and ancient Greek reliefs, from feminist graphics and Warhol's empty electric chair to the blue-tinted complexion of Singer Sargent's Madame X. It is the most expansive examination of the human body in art, spanning western and non-western, ancient to contemporary, representative to abstract and conceptual. Over 400 artists are featured in chapters that explore identity, beauty, religion, absent body, sex and gender, power, body's limits, abject body and bodies & space. Works range from 11,000 BC hand stencils in Argentine caves to videos and performances by contemporary artists such as Marina Abramovic, Joan Jonas and Bruce Nauman? Its fresh, accessible and dynamic voice brings to life the thrilling diversity of both classical and contemporary art through the prism of the body. More than simply a book of representations, this is an original and thought provoking look at the human body across time, cultures and media.

Book Punk and Neo tribal Body Art

    Book Details:
  • Author : Daniel Wojcik
  • Publisher : Folk Art and Artists (Hardcove
  • Release : 1995
  • ISBN : 9780878057351

Download or read book Punk and Neo tribal Body Art written by Daniel Wojcik and published by Folk Art and Artists (Hardcove. This book was released on 1995 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Punk body adornment, the most notorious and celebrated of recent styles among youth the subculture, emerged in the mid-1970s and in varying forms has persisted to the present day. This study illustrates the confrontational aesthetic of punk and neo-tribalism, the most shocking form of art. Like members of previous counter groups, denizens of the punk subculture have created a coherent and elaborate system of adornment calculated to horrify the general public. Their aesthetic of shock and negation expresses nihilism, apocalypse, and a profound cultural pessimism. These philosophies are revealed not only through adornment but also through music, art, dance, "fanzines," and dramatizations of violence and other antisocial behavior. Their symbolic inversions, ritual pollutions, and carnivalesque antics violate conventions of daily life. Their anti-commercial, do-it-yourself ethos, with its emphasis on parody and gender confusion and its interest in the exotic and the forbidden, further challenges dominant cultural values and ideologies. As mainstream society and the fashion industry incorporate such countercultural styles, the vanguard in shock aesthetics permutates into new forms of outrage. Here, along with a survey of distinctive styles that have been influenced by punk ethos and aesthetic, is a focus on one new-tribalist, Perry Farrell, who has utilized forms of adornment inspired by non-Western body art and modification (tattooing, piercing, scarification). This informally-taught artist and musician, who once lived in the streets of Los Angeles, founded the band Jane's Addiction and created the Lollapalooza tour. Understanding this key figure in the alternative culture illuminates the subversive and transformative appeal that body art has for American youth.
