Pandeiro Basics presents so much more than a method or set of playing techniques; herein, you will find a historical introduction to numerous Brazilian musical styles, rhythm patterns with contextual references typically performed on the pandeiro, and an introduction to principal pioneer performers on the instrument. These patterns are represented in standard percussion notation with note values represented on a single line. In addition, you will learn the secret to playing the pandeiro with constant 16th note rotation in one hand while playing the patterns with your other. Technique will include how to get varying kinds of sounds out of the drumhead, as well as muting and technical-style differences. The author provides dozens of listening suggestions for readers. Consulting these recordings will familiarize you with some great choro and samba soloists and groups that use the pandeiro, guaranteeing stylistic authenticity in your own renditions as you learn pandeiro parts for choro, samba, maxixe, baião, côco, valsa, frevo, afoxé, funk rhythms, and more. The book culminates in a pandeiro duet followed by a pandeiro-specific FAQ list. For example, “How do you get a roll out of the pandeiro?” The answer is in here. The author—herself an outstanding percussionist, recording artist and player of the 10-inch choro model—offers extensive tips on finding, selecting, holding, tuning, practicing, developing tone, amplifying, avoiding injury, and maintaining this most versatile of hand percussion instruments, the pandeiro! Great for any beginner or advanced player!

Book excerpt: These 102 lilting slow airs with suggested chord changes are suitable for violin, flute, penny whistle, recorder, concertina, accordion, keyboard, harp, hammered dulcimer, etc., accompanied by any chord-capable instrument. Ancient to 19th-century in origin, most of these melodies will seem refreshingly new to modern-day musicians, audiences and even connoisseurs of the Celtic style. The author encourages readers to add their own ornaments once they have learned the basic tunes. Most of the tune titles appear in their original Scots Gaelic or Irish with helpful English translations; the original titles, however, lend this collection an air of authenticity. These melodies are worthy of performance and recording by modern musicians, and one Christmas tune in particular, “Taladh Chriosta” (Christ Child’s Lullaby”), ranks right up there with “What Child Is This/Greensleeves” in its originality and sheer beauty. This collection includes access to online audio of all 102 melodies.

  • ISBN : 9780786675210
  • Pages : 104 pages

Download or read book Drum Fills written by D. Scott Williams and published by Bill's Music Shelf. This book was released on 2010-11-04 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was created to help drummers improve their abilities to play great drum fills. The material presented was originally developed over the course of several years, as a result of the needs and requests of many of my students. As drummerspractice playing fills, it becomes apparent that there are a variety of issues that need to be addressed. To play fluent and creative fills, a drummer needs a strong foundation of basic fill concepts, the technique to execute the fill, and musical ideas for the content of the fill. Without these key elements, playing fills can be asource of difficulty and frustration. To further illustrate this idea, in some cases a drummer may practice a particular lick or sticking pattern to a high degree of physical execution, but does not have a clear understanding of how to apply it well within a musical phrase. The opposite is also sometimes true, a drummer mayunderstand a simple rhythmic idea and play it very well as a fill, but doesn't quite know how to employ more interesting techniques or sounds into the phrase and get something else out of it. The goal of this book is to help drummers achieve a balance in these necessary skills. This book presents a diverse collection of studies and exercises that clarifythe basics of drum fills, develop more advanced and specific techniques to use in fills, and present many ideas for musical phrases using the techniques. Thestudies are presented in an order that follows a natural progression of ability, however, the exercises do not need to be played in the order they are presented.Students and teachers can select exercises to design a curriculum that fits a student's needs as their skills develop. With each set of exercises, you will find descriptions, tips and practice instructions. Sometimes they are written for each individual study, and when appropriate they are written for the entire chapter. Be sure to read the text that accompanies each part of this book to get the most out of the exercise
