Book excerpt: Oh, God, what if they're following me? He turned his head slowly toward the right and moved his eyes to look at the driver of the car on his right. It was a black woman. She did not look his way and looked innocent enough. He breathed slightly and looked to his left. The driver of the car was a white-haired, elderly man. I think it's okay, he thought. A tractor-trailer suddenly appeared in his rearview mirror. What the hell's he doing, he asked himself. Are they allowed on the Beltway or not? He was confused and couldn't think. Just keep driving. Change lanes to see if he's following, he decided. But seeing the exit to Interstate 66 going toward Manassas, he took the exit. The tractor-trailer stayed on the Beltway headed for Maryland. Just keep driving, Jamie thought. Maybe just lay low for a couple of days . He drove for an hour, then crossed the Blue Ridge Mountains and started down into the valley toward Interstate 81, which ran all the way through Virginia and into Tennessee. He noticed a black car in his rear-view mirror. It was the kind of car a gangster would use.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Multiple myeloma is currently still an incurable disease, but during the past decade knowledge of its molecular pathogenesis has increased rapidly. This has led to remarkable progress in both diagnosis and therapy, including in particular the approval of novel and first-in-class drugs such as thalidomide, bortezomib, and lenalidomide. This book, written by internationally acknowledged experts, covers a wide range of topics relating to multiple myeloma, including history, epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical features, staging, and prognostic systems. The principal focus, however, is on therapy, with detailed information on the various promising treatment options which give hope that this cancer will be transformed into a chronic disease or even become curable. Individualized therapy and the variety of supportive treatment options, as described in this volume, will help in achieving this goal, as well as in reducing adverse events and improving quality of life.

Book excerpt: Pre-Raphaelitism's influence during the long nineteenth century was far-reaching, affecting artistic and literary thought in places, media, and times far removed from its origins in 1848 London. Worldwide Pre-Raphaelitism examines the movement's development beyond England, from the continental "immortals" glorified by the nascent Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood to later reactions against and in sympathy with the ideals of the movement after it had ended. This collection of essays by art historians, literary critics, fashion historians, women's studies scholars, and independent researchers from around the world enhances our understanding of the global impact of Pre-Raphaelitism on the art-historical and literary developments of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Book excerpt: Creator of the legendary Captain Blood, Rafael Sabatini is one of the most outstanding authors of historical adventure stories. An Italian-English author, he was called the “Alexander Dumas of modern fiction.” Sabatini was born in Italy but spent much of his youth in England and other European countries. He first achieved fame as a journalist before becoming one of the greatest adventure novelists in the history of world literature. It took Sabatini almost 20 years after publishing his first novel to gain notoriety. Success finally arrived in 1921 with the publication of Scaramouche, a novel about the French Revolution. Soon the author’s pen shifted to tales of the sea – scribbling adventures of free corsairs. Sabatini’s full talent revealed itself in books like The Sea Hawk and The Black Swan. His legendary series featuring Captain Blood became popular the world over. Today, his books are still treasured by readers and have served as the inspiration for dozens of films. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can an abstract sequence of sounds so intensely express emotional states? How does music elicit or arouse our emotions? What happens at the physiological and neural level when we listen to music? How do composers and performers practically manage the expressive powers of music? How have societies sought to harness the powers of music for social or therapeutic purposes? In the past ten years, research into the topic of music and emotion has flourished. In addition, the relationship between the two has become of interest to a broad range of disciplines in both the sciences and humanities. The Emotional Power of Music is a multidisciplinary volume exploring the relationship between music and emotion. Bringing together contributions from psychologists, neuroscientists, musicologists, musicians, and philosophers, the volume presents both theoretical perspectives and in-depth explorations of particular musical works, as well as first-hand reports from music performers and composers. In the first section of the book, the authors consider the expression of emotion within music, through both performance and composing. The second section explores how music can stimulate the emotions, considering the psychological and neurological mechanisms that underlie music listening. The third section explores how different societes have sought to manage and manipulate the power of music. The book is valuable for those in the fields of music psychology and music education, as well as philosophy and musicology
