Book excerpt: Bob is a Zombie who was just going about his business when a band of thieves stole his hand so that they could make a batch of Elfagra in the Upperworld. While it's bad enough that they've stolen Bob's hand for such a purpose, it comes to Zombie's attention that if they use the wrong technique it could cause a cosmic rift that will spell the real death of Bob...not just the long, drawn out one that's part of being a Zombie. Modacio is a thief who made an enormous mistake on her last job that resulted in the Thieves Guild putting a high price on her head. Working with her partner in crime, and Ogre (one of the nice kinds) named Kone, she sets in place a plan to deliver a gift to the head of the Thieves Guild in exchange for having the bounty taken off her head. Unfortunately, this means she has to swipe the hand of a defenseless Zombie. But better his hand than her life! Bob turns to his only real friend, a Dwarf named Perkder, and asks for help in getting his hand back. The two slap on disguises and begin a journey to the Upperworld in an attempt to stop the thieves before it's too late.

  • Publisher : Unbound Publishing
  • Release : 2012-03-23
  • ISBN : 1908717130
  • Pages : 259 pages

Download or read book News from Gardenia written by Robert Llewellyn and published by Unbound Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-23 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Gavin Meckler's light aircraft encounters a mysterious cloud and crashes to earth, he discovers that the eerily quiet landscape in which he has landed is 200 years older than the one from which he took off. In this gentle, peaceful, sustainable new world, it is possible to travel from one side of the globe to the other in a matter of minutes without burning fuel, and everyone is a gardener because that's how they can be sure to eat. Inspired by William Morris's utopian novel News from Nowhere, Robert Llewellyn shows us a future where we don't burn anything to make anything else and which isn't hovering on the brink of disaster; where aliens haven't invaded, meteors haven’t hit and zombies haven’t taken over. In short, a world where humanity eventually gets it right. All the technology described in the novel has seen the light of day in reality. Llewellyn's future isn't perfect and may not be very likely, but it is entirely possible.

Book The Vegan Studies Project

Download or read book The Vegan Studies Project written by Laura Wright and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This inescapably controversial study envisions, defines, and theorizes an area that Laura Wright calls vegan studies. We have an abundance of texts on vegans and veganism including works of advocacy, literary and popular fiction, film and television, and cookbooks, yet until now, there has been no study that examines the social and cultural discourses shaping our perceptions of veganism as an identity category and social practice. Ranging widely across contemporary American society and culture, Wright unpacks the loaded category of vegan identity. She examines the mainstream discourse surrounding and connecting animal rights to (or omitting animal rights from) veganism. Her specific focus is on the construction and depiction of the vegan body--both male and female--as a contested site manifest in contemporary works of literature, popular cultural representations, advertising, and new media. At the same time, Wright looks at critical animal studies, human-animal studies, posthumanism, and ecofeminism as theoretical frameworks that inform vegan studies (even as they differ from it). The vegan body, says Wright, threatens the status quo in terms of what we eat, wear, and purchase--and also in how vegans choose not to participate in many aspects of the mechanisms undergirding mainstream culture. These threats are acutely felt in light of post-9/11 anxieties over American strength and virility. A discourse has emerged that seeks, among other things, to bully veganism out of existence as it is poised to alter the dominant cultural mindset or, conversely, to constitute the vegan body as an idealized paragon of health, beauty, and strength. What better serves veganism is exemplified by Wright's study: openness, debate, inquiry, and analysis.

Book Cookie Broccoli Scariest Halloween Ever A Graphic Novel

Download or read book Cookie Broccoli Scariest Halloween Ever A Graphic Novel written by Bob McMahon and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2024-08-13 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Halloween, best friends Cookie and Broccoli revel in funny tricks and sweet treats in this early graphic novel that’s all about the true meaning of bravery and not judging others before you get to know them. In the first story, Broccoli’s not a fan of his classmates’ scary Halloween pranks, so his best buddy Cookie loans Broccoli his superhero costume—because Super Broccoli isn't afraid of anything! That is, until the ultimate fright has Broccoli fleeing for the big, scary woods behind their school, where he comes across someone in a Sasquatch costume. (It is just a costume . . . right?) Then, in the second story, Cookie and Broccoli’s classmates learn an important lesson about scaring others and making assumptions about newcomers (yes, even big, hairy Sasquatches). And in the final story, Cookie has to choose between his friends or his obsession with Halloween candy! Fans of early graphic novel series like Pizza and Taco and Narwhal and Jelly will adore this latest book in the Cookie & Broccoli series, which is chock-full of punny costumes (a garlic dressed like a vampire, anyone?), silly asides from the duo’s good friend Blueberry, and even a fun Halloween-themed activity for readers at the end of the book.
