Book A Step by Step Guide to Starting and Running a Successful Horse Boarding Business

Download or read book A Step by Step Guide to Starting and Running a Successful Horse Boarding Business written by Sheri Grunska and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-03-26 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book will open your eyes to the world of horse boarding and all that it encompasses. One of the most often asked questions I get from people who want to start a boarding business is, "Where do I start?" Great question! Most people, including myself, usually start with a couple of horses and then progress into boarding. This book is a step by step guide on what you need to do to get your barn or stable up and going and how to maintain a strong and healthy boarding business. Whether you want to run a large facility or a small stable this book will cover everything you need to know to help you start off with a strong foundation for your business. I have included a current business plan (designed especially for the horse boarding industry), boarding contract and barn rules which is only the beginning. This book will walk you through every step and give you tasks lists and suggestions for every part of your business from designing your barn to seeking a loan. This book includes designing a barn or stable, your tack room, horse stalls and riding arenas. It covers extensive pages on herd management, turnout and paddocks and how to design them and what to think about before you put the first post in the ground. It will include business insurance, accounting and lawyers and what they mean to your business. I discuss the financial part of business ownership throughout the book and how to streamline your chores and hire employees. I discuss conflict resolution, the barn manager's role and client relations and the intention of this book is to help you avoid some of the common pitfalls of barn management and business ownership and that is only the beginning. The topics that are covered in this book are extensive and you won't find a more current book on running a boarding business. This book will benefit any size boarding operation. A large boarding barn equates to a large scale effort and risk. A small boarding stable carries lower financial risk but requires the same planning to be successful and can have many of the same issues as a large facility. Every area of the horse industry is impacted by the boarding stable and no matter the size; each plays an integral part in the success and stability of the equine industry.

This book addresses the horse's environment and how it can affect his behavior. If they are stressed at rest, then work is only going to raise their anxiety! This major factor is often not even considered when looking for a boarding stable only because it hasn't been talked about in detail until now! If you are a horse owner than I encourage you to get this book and start looking at horse boarding in a whole new way. Barn owners and managers - this book is equally important for you to read because it will help you design and layout exactly what kind of boarding stable you want in ALL operations including special services and chores! This book is easy to read with straightforward and honest questions and answers that will open your eyes to boarding stable practices. After you read this book your knowledge is going to equip you to make smart and informed decisions when it comes to choosing a horse boarding stable and help avoid a mismatch for both you and more importantly your horse. IT WILL NOT MATTER if you have the best trainer or most expensive saddle and tack if your horse is stressed out due to his living conditions!! If he is not getting enough to eat or can't get to the hay because he is on the bottom of the pecking order in the herd, or is constantly being chased down, then lessons, training and other activities will never be as good as they could be because he will not perform at his best. If he is limited on water due to it being frozen or not topped off then you are compromising his health and well-being. This is only the beginning of things to think about when looking for a boarding stable for the horse you love so dearly.

Book excerpt: Allan Fredrickson grew up in Southwestern Manitoba, Canada and attended the college of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Minnesota. Upon graduation he accepted an associate position in a mixed animal, full service veterinary hospital in Mount Vernon, Washington. He has four grown children and lives with his wife Barbara in Mount Vernon. When Dr. Friedson approached the horse he ran his hand along the neck under the mane then down her face and over her nose. He reached up and felt her ears. He slowly slid his hand into her mouth and gently wrapped his hand around her tongue. On the morning Snoot was to be taken from his friends, Alton took him to a quiet spot in the woods behind the duck pond to play together and have time to say goodbye. As he scratched the pig's belly, snoot looked up at him and grunted as if he understood every word that was being said. When Rachel walked in in she couldn't believe her eyes. Mrs. Martin was pressed right against the wall with her daughter lying on the floor between her legs. Dr. Friedson had the dog cradled in his arms protecting the large injury along its back. Dr. Friedson had seen many gruesome sights during his time in practice but this was the worst wire cut he had been called to treat. The fright and pain of the horse, the massive destruction of tissue, and the anguish and anxiety of the owners, was overwhelming.

  • Author : Clay McShane
  • Publisher : JHU Press
  • Release : 2007-07-16
  • ISBN : 0801892317

Download or read book The Horse in the City written by Clay McShane and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2007-07-16 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Honorable mention, 2007 Lewis Mumford Prize, American Society of City and Regional Planning The nineteenth century was the golden age of the horse. In urban America, the indispensable horse provided the power for not only vehicles that moved freight, transported passengers, and fought fires but also equipment in breweries, mills, foundries, and machine shops. Clay McShane and Joel A. Tarr, prominent scholars of American urban life, here explore the critical role that the horse played in the growing nineteenth-century metropolis. Using such diverse sources as veterinary manuals, stable periodicals, teamster magazines, city newspapers, and agricultural yearbooks, they examine how the horses were housed and fed and how workers bred, trained, marketed, and employed their four-legged assets. Not omitting the problems of waste removal and corpse disposal, they touch on the municipal challenges of maintaining a safe and productive living environment for both horses and people and the rise of organizations like the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In addition to providing an insightful account of life and work in nineteenth-century urban America, The Horse in the City brings us to a richer understanding of how the animal fared in this unnatural and presumably uncomfortable setting.
