With ambitious breadth and rare insight, she examines: The arduous but exhilarating work of writing the Constitution and the Bill of Rights; The great experiment in catharsis that was the Truth and Reconciliation Commission; The reinvigoration of racial polarisation under the Mbeki administration, and the slow burn of resentment that is coming to a head among the next generation (as manifested in the #RhodesMustFall campaign); The entrenchment of cronyism under Zuma, and the fight to protect the crucial balance of accountability enshrined in the freedom of the media and the independence of the judiciary.

Book The Arts and Crafts of Literacy

Download or read book The Arts and Crafts of Literacy written by Andrea Brigaglia and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the last two decades, the (re-)discovery of thousands of manuscripts in different regions of sub-Saharan Africa has questioned the long-standing approach of Africa as a continent only characterized by orality and legitimately assigned to the continent the status of a civilization of written literacy. However, most of the existing studies mainly aim at serving literary and historical purposes, and focus only on the textual dimension of the manuscripts. This book advances on the contrary a holistic approach to the study of these manuscripts and gather contributions on the different dimensions of the manuscript, i.e. the materials, the technologies, the practices and the communities involved in the production, commercialization, circulation, preservation and consumption. The originality of this book is found in its methodological approach as well as its comparative geographic focus, presenting studies on a continental scale, including regions formerly neglected by existing scholarship, provides a unique opportunity to expand our still scanty knowledge of the different manuscript cultures that the African continent has developed and that often can still be considered as living traditions.

Book excerpt: "This wonderful piece of social history delves into the rich world of the Cape hajj. It describes in great detail the particular traditions and ceremonies before and after hajj that are associated with the Cape Town Muslim community and recalls the particular status that was given to the hajj at the Cape - a status reflected in the hajji's dress and demeanour. The author sketches a vivid picture of the main players in the local hajj industry - the travel agents, the hajj operators and the regulatory bodies - and also dutifully tracks the many changes - cultural, economic and political - that have characterized the Cape hajj experience over the last three centuries"--Book jacket.

Book Seeing Religion

  • Author : Roman R. Williams
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2015-05-13
  • ISBN : 1317677803
  • Pages : 249 pages

Download or read book Seeing Religion written by Roman R. Williams and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-05-13 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The potential of visual research methods in the sociology of religion is vast, but largely untapped. This comes as a surprise, however, given the visual, symbolic, and material nature of religion and spirituality. Evidence of religious faith and practice is materially present in everything from clothing and jewelry to artifacts found in people’s homes and workplaces. Not only is religion’s symbolic and material presence palpable throughout society, it also informs attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors of countless people worldwide. Words-and-numbers approaches to social research, however, sometimes miss important dimensions of religion and spirituality in the contemporary world. Seeing Religion is an invitation to a visual sociology of religion. Contributors draw from their current research to discuss the application of visual methods to the study of religion and spirituality. Each chapter stimulates the sociological imagination through examples of research techniques, analytical approaches, and methodological concerns.

Book Islamic Sufi Networks in the Western Indian Ocean c 1880 1940

Download or read book Islamic Sufi Networks in the Western Indian Ocean c 1880 1940 written by Anne K. Bang and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-08-07 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the period c. 1880-1940, organized Sufism spread rapidly in the western Indian Ocean. New communities turned to Islam, and Muslim communities turned to new texts, practices and religious leaders. On the East African coast, the orders were both a vehicle for conversion to Islam and for reform of Islamic practice. The impact of Sufism on local communities is here traced geographically as a ripple reaching beyond the Swahili cultural zone southwards to Mozambique, Madagascar and Cape Town. Through an investigation of the texts, ritual practices and scholarly networks that went alongside Sufi expansion, this book places religious change in the western Indian Ocean within the wider framework of Islamic reform.
