Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lewis Carroll once wrote a story about a king who wanted a very accurate map of his kingdom. The king had a pathologically fastidious eye for detail and consequently decided that the map was to be produced at a scale of 1:1. The scribes dutifully set to and, in time, the map was made. The map carried details of every tree, every rock and every blade of grass throughout the entire land. The problem occurred when they tried to use -it. First of all, the map was extraordinarily difficult to open out and line up with the countryside. Its sheer bulk meant that it took whole armies to carry it and a great host of bureaucrats and technicians to maintain the information. Such was the detail of the map that as soon as the wind blew strongly, whole sections needed to be redrawn. What was worse was that all the farmers protested because the map completely cut out the light from the sun and all the crops died. Eventually the howls of protest became so strong that the king was forced to take action. He did away with the old paper copy and decided to use the kingdom itself as the map. All lived happily ever after. There are, at least, two morals to this tale. First, you are almost certainly doomed to failure if you do not get the representation of the problem right.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the 61 papers that were accepted for presenta tion at the 1992 British Machine Vision Conference. Together they provide a snapshot of current machine vision research throughout the UK in 24 different institutions. There are also several papers from vision groups in the rest of Europe, North America and Australia. At the start of the book is an invited paper from the first keynote speaker, Robert Haralick. The quality of papers submitted to the conference was very high and the programme committee had a hard task selecting around half for presentation at the meeting and inclusion in these proceedings. It is a positive feature of the annual BMV A conference that the entire process from the submission deadline through to the conference itself and publication of the proceedings is completed in under 5 months. My thanks to members of the programme committee for their essential contribution to the success of the conference and to Roger Boyle, Charlie Brown, Nick Efford and Sue Nemes for their excellent local organisation and administration of the conference at the University of Leeds.

Book Computational and Psychophysical Mechanisms of Visual Coding

Download or read book Computational and Psychophysical Mechanisms of Visual Coding written by Michael Jenkin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-05-13 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All visual tasks, from the simplest computer graphics program to the most complex biological visual system, require an underlying representation of visual information. The structure or coding of this representation provides the framework for processing the information. Both the biological and computational communities have had to address the task of designing or inferring visual coding strategies. This volume, by some of the most active contributors in the field of visual coding, describes some of the mechanisms used to code descriptions of visual phenomena in both areas. These chapters illustrate the similarities in the problems considered and the common models and algorithms that are proposed to solve them. The book includes an overview that sets the later chapters in context. Researchers in neuroscience and computational vision will find a wealth of new ideas here.

Book Spatial Computing Issues In Vision Multimedia And Visualization Technologies

Download or read book Spatial Computing Issues In Vision Multimedia And Visualization Technologies written by Horst Bunke and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-08-27 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the result of a special workshop on Spatial Computing which brought together experts in computer vision, visualization, multimedia and geographic information systems to discuss common problems and applications. The common theme of the workshop was the need to integrate human perception and domain knowledge with developing representations and solutions to problems which necessarily involve the interpretation of sensed data. The overwhelming conclusion was that these different areas of spatial computing should be communicating more than is done at present and that such workshops and publications would help this process.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human and animal vision systems have been driven by the pressures of evolution to become capable of perceiving and reacting to their environments as close to instantaneously as possible. Casting such a goal of reactive vision into the framework of existing technology necessitates an artificial system capable of operating continuously, selecting and integrating information from an environment within stringent time delays. The YAP (Vision As Process) project embarked upon the study and development of techniques with this aim in mind. Since its conception in 1989, the project has successfully moved into its second phase, YAP II, using the integrated system developed in its predecessor as a basis. During the first phase of the work the "vision as a process paradigm" was realised through the construction of flexible stereo heads and controllable stereo mounts integrated in a skeleton system (SA V A) demonstrating continuous real-time operation. It is the work of this fundamental period in the V AP story that this book aptly documents. Through its achievements, the consortium has contributed to building a strong scientific base for the future development of continuously operating machine vision systems, and has always underlined the importance of not just solving problems of purely theoretical interest but of tackling real-world scenarios. Indeed the project members should now be well poised to contribute (and take advantage of) industrial applications such as navigation and process control, and already the commercialisation of controllable heads is underway.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As perception stands for the acquisition of a real world representation by interaction with an environment, learning is the modification of this internal representation. This book highlights the relation between perception and learning and describes the influence of the learning in the interaction with the environment.Besides, this volume contains a series of applications of both machine learning and perception, where the former is often embedded in the latter and vice-versa.Among the topics covered, there are visual perception for autonomous robots, model generation of visual patterns, attentional reasoning, genetic approaches and various categories of neural networks.
