Book Race Gender and Empire in American Detective Fiction

Download or read book Race Gender and Empire in American Detective Fiction written by John Cullen Gruesser and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-09-11 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book highlights detection's malleability by analyzing the works of particular groups of authors from specific time periods written in response to other texts. It traces the roles that gender, race and empire have played in American detective fiction from Edgar Allan Poe's works through the myriad variations upon them published before 1920 to hard-boiled fiction (the origins of which derive in part from turn-of-the-20th-century notions about gender, race and nationality), and it concludes with a discussion of contemporary mystery series with inner-city settings that address black male and female heroism.

Book Reading Transatlantic Girlhood in the Long Nineteenth Century

Download or read book Reading Transatlantic Girlhood in the Long Nineteenth Century written by Robin L. Cadwallader and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-13 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection is the first of its kind to interrogate both literal and metaphorical transatlantic exchanges of culture and ideas in nineteenth-century girls’ fiction. As such, it initiates conversations about how the motif of travel in literature taught nineteenth-century girl audiences to reexamine their own cultural biases by offering a fresh perspective on literature that is often studied primarily within a national context. Women and children in nineteenth-century America are often described as being tied to the home and the domestic sphere, but this collection challenges this categorization and shows that girls in particular were often expected to go abroad and to learn new cultural frames in order to enter the realm of adulthood; those who could not afford to go abroad literally could do so through the stories that traveled to them from other lands or the stories they read of others’ travels. Via transatlantic exchange, then, authors, readers, and the characters in the texts covered in this collection confront the idea of what constitutes the self. Books examined in this volume include Adeline Trafton’s An American Girl Abroad (1872), Johanna Spyri’s Heidi (1881), and Elizabeth W. Champney’s eleven-book Vassar Girl Series (1883-92), among others.

Book Rediscovering Nancy Drew

Download or read book Rediscovering Nancy Drew written by Carolyn Stewart Dyer and published by University of Iowa Press. This book was released on 1995-05 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Rediscovering Nancy Drew is a rich collection of literary memories and insightful cultural comments."--Journal of Children's Literature "Nancy, especially the Nancy of the original story, is our bright heroine, chasing down the shadows, conquering our worst fears, giving us a glimpse of our brave and better selves, proving to everybody exactly how admirable and wonderful a thing it is to be a girl. Thank you, Nancy Drew."--Nancy Pickard "Nancy Drew belongs to a moment in feminist history; it is a moment, I suggest, that we celebrate, allowing ourselves the satisfaction of praising her for what she dared and forgiving her for what she failed to undertake or understand."--Carolyn G. Heilbrun "Rediscovering Nancy Drew lights up the territory. It informs, delights, and acknowledges through love and scholarship a debt long overdue."--Dale H. Ross In 1991, women staff and faculty at the University of Iowa discovered that the pseudonymous author of the original Nancy Drew books, Carolyn Keene, was none other than Mildred Wirt Benson, the first person to earn a master's degree in journalism at Iowa. The excitement caused by their discovery led to the 1993 Nancy Drew Conference, which explored the remarkable passion for Nancy Drew that spans a wide spectrum of American society. The result: a lively collaboration of essays by and interviews with mystery writers, collectors, publishers, librarians, scholars, journalists, and fans which presents a spirited, informative, totally enjoyable tribute to the driver of that blue roadster so many readers have coveted.

Another short-term love affair, another broken heart, courtesy of ruthless anchorwoman Miranda Covell. Blythe Jansen isn’t any ordinary guest in her Martha’s Vineyard home, though. She’s an accomplished photographer who’s not afraid to get to the heart of the matter with her subjects. Not only that, but Miranda seems to think Sabrina needs a fake relationship to save her image. Sabrina is tired of dealing with the fallout of her sister’s romantic conquests, not to mention living in her overbearing shadow. Yet, she can’t deny her attraction to Blythe. Maybe it’s the lonely summer nights or the silence broken only by the crashing of the waves, but Sabrina decides to let Blythe stay for the season. What starts out as a game quickly turns into something more when Blythe reveals what she wants: Sabrina’s heart. Too bad Sabrina has been burned twice before by her sister’s ex-girlfriends and doesn’t expect this to be any different. But what could one little summer fling hurt? Especially if it’s not meant to be the real thing… Search terms: ff romance, lesbian romance, lgbt romance, celebrity romance, fake relationship, older woman younger woman, age difference romance, island romance, lesbian fiction
