The aim of Playing for Life is threefold. First, the work provides an introduction to the study of Africa through performance suitable for undergraduate students. Second, it supplies a sampling of Africa's rich performative resources. And third, it shows how Africans are working to harness the energy of performance to help solve the most terrible of contemporary problems, the AIDS pandemic. This book focuses chiefly on the AIDS epidemic/AIDS performances in two African countries, South Africa and Mali. The choice is reflective of a need to provide at least two different case views of African performance and African performative response to the AIDS crisis. The countries, so divergent from one another by most social indicators--economy, religion, geography and climate, colonial history, pre-colonial history, and nature and severity of the AIDS epidemic--offer excellent contrasts from one another, making them ideal selections for this work. In addition to the maps, charts, and photographs sprinkled throughout the volume, the chapters have been illustrated with audio and video clips featured on the accompanying compact disc (CD). Besides the CD, which comes with the book, it is possible to purchase a 20-minute documentary, AIDS and the Arts in Africa, a visual summary of Playing for Life produced by Louise Bourgault. Royalties from Playing for Life will be donated to support projects for AIDS orphans in South Africa and Mali. It presents integration as a process of boundary transcendence, redefinition, shift, and change that fundamentally alters the nature of the European states. Its core concern lies in the relationship between the specific institutional design of the new Brussels centre, the boundary redefinitions that result from its political production, and, finally,the consequences of these two elements on established and developing national European political structures. Integration is examined as a new historical phase in the development of Europe, characterized by a powerful trend toward legal, economic, and cultural de-differentiation after the five-centuryprocess of differentiation that led to the European system of nation states.Considering the EU as the formation of an enlarged territorial system, this work recovers some of the classic issues of political modernization theory: Is the EU an attempt at state formation? Is it an attempt at centre formation without nation building? Is it a process of centre formation without democratization?This work also seeks to sharpen the conceptual tools currently available to deal with processes of territorial enlargement and unification. It develops a theoretical framework for political structuring beyond the nation state, capable of linking all aspects of EU integration (inter-governmentalism, definition of rights, the 'constitutionalization' of treaties, the tensions between the new territorial hierarchy and the nation states, etc.). The book adopts an 'holistic' approach to integration,in the form of a theory from which hypotheses can be generated (even if it is not possible to test all of its components). This theoretical framework has three principal aims: to overcome a rigid distinction between domestic politics and international relations; to link actors' orientations,interests, and motivations with macro outcomes; and to relate structural profiles with dynamic processes of change.

It collects Nougé's notes and photographs from 1929-30 to form a guidebook to the surrealist image. Nougé here outlines his conception of the object and the surrealist approach to it, while also offering an accompaniment to the visual work of his colleague, René Magritte, whose paintings he sometimes titled. How might a tangle of string elicit terror? How might the suppression of an object move one to sentimentality? What is the effect of a pair of gloves on a loaf of sliced bread? Nougé's accompanying photographs explore these notions, and feature a number of his Belgian surrealist colleagues. This translation is presented as a facsimile of the original edition, with an afterword by Xavier Canonne, director of the Musée de la Photographie. A biochemist by trade, Paul Nougé(1895-1967) was a leading light of Belgian surrealism and its primary theorist, as well as a decisive influence on such Lettrists and Situationists as Guy Debord and Gil J. Wolman, who would take inspiration from his conception of plagiarism for what would come to be termed "détournement." Nougé steered the Brussels surrealist group toward a more rational approach to visual and verbal language that discarded the Parisian surrealists' proclivity for irrationality and occultism.
