All shared one thing in common. During the late eighteenth century, they were deemed to be mad and forcefully admitted to the Hospital de San Hipolito in Mexico City, the first hospital of the New World to specialize in the care and custody of the mentally disturbed. Christina Ramos reconstructs the history of this overlooked colonial hospital from its origins in 1567 to its transformation in the eighteenth century, when it began to admit a growing number of patients transferred from the Inquisition and secular criminal courts. Drawing on the poignant voices of patients, doctors, friars, and inquisitors, Ramos treats San Hipolito as both a microcosm and a colonial laboratory of the Hispanic Enlightenment—a site where traditional Catholicism and rationalist models of madness mingled in surprising ways. She shows how the emerging ideals of order, utility, rationalism, and the public good came to reshape the institutional and medical management of madness. While the history of psychiatry's beginnings has often been told as seated in Europe, Ramos proposes an alternative history of madness's medicalization that centers colonial Mexico and places religious figures, including inquisitors, at the pioneering forefront.

This was a central point of the shocking revelations of the Parliamentary enquiry into 'madhouses' in 1815/16. James Monro, and his son John, had already suffered a public scandal with the publication of 'A Treatise on Madness' in 1758. Here, William Battie, physician to the London asylum of St. Luke's, argued that Bethlem and the treatment doled out by the Monros, was antiquated, negligent and abusive. Book excerpt: In "Couching Resistance", Janet Walker examines professional and popular psychiatric literature published between World War II and the mid-1960s to develop a picture of psychiatry's ambivalent response to women patients. This ambivalence, Walker argues, also comes through in the profusion of Hollywood films from the same period on the subject of psychiatry and women. Even though in many cases men and women made up an equal number of psychiatric patients, psychiatry and fictional psychiatry often relied on the adjustment of "deviant" women in order to present their respective solutions. Still, Walker reveals a self-critical strain in psychiatry that attacked the profession's authoritarianism. Over the time period in question she sees an increasing willingness on the part of Hollywood cinema to deal with volatile issues, including childhood sexual trauma and the social origins of female mental illness. These issues were coming up, Walker says, in the emergent feminist critique of conformist psychiatry. Walker's reading of films including "The Snake Pit", "The Three Faces of Eve", "Lilith", and "Freud" in conjunction with such non-film cultural representations as marriage manuals, pharmaceutical advertisments, and letters from psychiatrists to motion-picture personnel, responds to the challenge to understand film in its wider cultural context.
