Book Blue Mold of Tobacco Classic Reprint

Download or read book Blue Mold of Tobacco Classic Reprint written by Hilde McGrath and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Blue Mold of Tobacco Downy mildew first made its appearance in the United States in four widely separated seed beds of cigar wrapper tobacco in Gadsden County, Florida in the latter part of March 1921. By the beginning of April it had been reported from a number of seedbeds in the adjoining Georgia County of Decatur. Before the end of the growing season the disease had spread over all of the cigar wrapper area in the Florida Georgia district. With the aid of pathologists from the United States Department of Agriculture (81, 82, 83) the disease was eradicated by burning diseased plants and by drenching seedbeds with formaldehyde solution. A weak Bordeaux mixture, 2-2-50, was recommended as a spray for healthy leaves. After this initial outbreak blue mold did not appear again until 10 years later, when it broke out with even greater vehe mence than before, originating in the same florida-georgia area where it had first appeared in 1921. Before we discuss the spread of the disease from 1931 to the present it is advisable to spend a little time in consideration of how the disease happened to appear on cultivated tobacco in the United States, including the possibilities either that it was introduced into the country or that it is endemic. A great deal of conjecture has arisen since 1921 in an attempt to explain the presence of this disease in North America. Regardless of the fact that all theories are still conjecture and probably must necessarily remain so, the evidence for both endemism and introduction from an extra-territorial source will be given for the record. Book The Plant Disease Warning Service in 1950 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Plant Disease Warning Service in 1950 Classic Reprint written by Paul R. Miller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-17 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plant Disease Warning Service in 1950 As one result of this extremely favorable weather, late blight on tomatoes attained the most widespread distribution ever recorded in this country, with severity and loss equalling or possi bly exceeding that suffered from the destructive 1946 outbreak. The disease moved westward, appearing in States where it had never been reported previously. It was widely reported in commercial acreages. In many cases untreated fields were completely destroyed.' Infection of southern -grown transplants was again a contributing factor in occurrence and severity, accord ing to reports from several areas, especially Mississippi, Illinois, Virginia, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. Regarding blue mold of tobacco, following the high January temperatures which were as much as 12 degrees above normal, this disease could have become very active. Extensive destruction was prevented by the warm-dry weather of February in the-southern Atlantic States, the mildness of attack in other cases, and the thoroughness and effectiveness of control-measures employed by growers. Cucurbit downy mildew was more active on the watermelon cr0p this year than heretofore. This differential rate of development of downy mildew on watermelons and cantaloupes, which was noted by pathologists from several States, was probably due to the early and abundant build up and distribution of inoculum especially virulent on watermelons. Book The Plant Disease Warning Service in 1951 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Plant Disease Warning Service in 1951 Classic Reprint written by Paul R. Miller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-08-08 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plant Disease Warning Service in 1951 Concerning tobacco blue mold, absence of overwintering inoculum in certain areas prevented development of the disease. Adequate amounts of spray and dust materials were readily available and were utilized. Despite the above-normal January temperatures, light rainfall and average temperatures in the following spring months in tobacco-growing areas, together with control measures, held blue mold at a low level. Cucurbit downy mildew was active this year in regions where it is endemic on squash and cu cumbers. Cucurbit-growing areas of Texas escaped the disease this year owing to hot, dry weather conditions. A feature of downy mildew occurrence this year was the absence of its usual progressive northward development. The disease was found in one place in Virginia, was not noticed in Maryland or Delaware, but appeared in Pennsylvania. Book Italy s Changing Tobacco Industry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Italy s Changing Tobacco Industry Classic Reprint written by Robert Wilton Johnson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-09 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Italy's Changing Tobacco Industry The resource mix that has made Italy the world's largest wine producer is not the best for tobacco. Nevertheless the Italian Government has long pro moted the crop as one method of solving the surplus labor situation. By the 1930's the country had become a net tobacco exporter and, except for a few postwar years, it remained one until the blue-mold disaster of 1961. Since then it has again been a net importer in every year except one. The government apparently hopes a reversal of this trend will come through its partnership in the European Economic Community (ec). It looks for ward to being a major supplier to the ec, which together make up the world's largest tobacco market. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foreign Agriculture Circular: Tobacco; January 1980 Flue-cured production fell 23 percent as area slipped 14 percent and yield was 10 percent below that of 1978. The 1979 burley crop suffered the heaviest blue-mold damage of any type. Average yields were down 19 percent -the result of blue-mold and an extremely wet growing and curing season. The 1980 tobacco cr0p is expected to be significantly larger than the 1979 output because of increased effective quotas for flue-cured and burley tobacco, and an anticipated recovery in yields. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • NAACP IMAGE AWARD WINNER • A dramatic expansion of a groundbreaking work of journalism, The 1619 Project: A New Origin Story offers a profoundly revealing vision of the American past and present. “[A] groundbreaking compendium . . . bracing and urgent . . . This collection is an extraordinary update to an ongoing project of vital truth-telling.”—Esquire NOW AN EMMY-NOMINATED HULU ORIGINAL DOCUSERIES • FINALIST FOR THE KIRKUS PRIZE • ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: The Washington Post, NPR, Esquire, Marie Claire, Electric Lit, Ms. magazine, Kirkus Reviews, Booklist In late August 1619, a ship arrived in the British colony of Virginia bearing a cargo of twenty to thirty enslaved people from Africa. Their arrival led to the barbaric and unprecedented system of American chattel slavery that would last for the next 250 years. This is sometimes referred to as the country’s original sin, but it is more than that: It is the source of so much that still defines the United States. The New York Times Magazine’s award-winning 1619 Project issue reframed our understanding of American history by placing slavery and its continuing legacy at the center of our national narrative. This book substantially expands on that work, weaving together eighteen essays that explore the legacy of slavery in present-day America with thirty-six poems and works of fiction that illuminate key moments of oppression, struggle, and resistance. The essays show how the inheritance of 1619 reaches into every part of contemporary American society, from politics, music, diet, traffic, and citizenship to capitalism, religion, and our democracy itself. This book that speaks directly to our current moment, contextualizing the systems of race and caste within which we operate today. It reveals long-glossed-over truths around our nation’s founding and construction—and the way that the legacy of slavery did not end with emancipation, but continues to shape contemporary American life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whereas most crops drive farmers apart as they compete for the best prices, the price controls on tobacco bring growers together. The result is a culture unlike any other in America, one often forgotten or overlooked as federal and state governments fight over the spoils of the tobacco settlement. Tobacco Culture describes the process of raising a crop of burley from the perspective and experience of the farmers themselves. In the process of gathering information for the book, the authors performed most steps in the tobacco production process, from dropping plants, burning seedbeds, topping, and cutting to stripping and baling the finished product. Van Willigen and Eastwood document both present practices and historical developments in tobacco farming at the very moment a way of life stands poised for dramatic change. In addition to growing practices, the authors found other common threads linking growers and tobacco producing regions. Where tobacco is grown, it often becomes the major cash crop and carries the health of the economy. Farmer Oscar Richardson states, "It's bread and butter. It's the industry of the community, the state as a whole.... You take tobacco out of Kentucky and this farmland wouldn't be worth a nickel." Combining cultural anthropology and oral history, John van Willigen and Susan Eastwood have created a remarkable portrait of the heart of the burley belt in Central Kentucky.

Individuals representing the fingerprint, academic, and scientific communities met in Chicago, Illinois, for a day and a half to discuss the state of fingerprint identification with a view toward the challenges raised by Daubert issues. The meeting was a joint project between the International Association for Identification (IAI) and West Virginia University (WVU). One recommendation that came out of that meeting was a suggestion to create a sourcebook for friction ridge examiners, that is, a single source of researched information regarding the subject. This sourcebook would provide educational, training, and research information for the international scientific community.
