Book excerpt: A generation removed from the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Power explosion of the 1960s, the pursuit of racial equality and social justice for African-Americans seems more elusive than ever. The realities of contemporary black America capture the nature of the crisis: life expectancy for black males is now below retirement age; median black income is less than 60 per cent that of whites; over 600,000 African-Americans are incarcerated in the US penal system; 23 per cent of all black males between the ages of eighteen and 29 are either in jail, on probation or parole, or awaiting trial. At the same time, affirmative action programs and civil rights reforms are being challenged by white conservatism. Confronted with a renascent right and the continuing burden of grotesque inequality, Manning Marable argues that the black struggle must move beyond previous strategies for social change. The politics of black nationalism, which advocates the building of separate black institutions, is an insufficient response. The politics of integration, characterized by traditional middle-class organizations like the NAACP and Urban League, seeks only representation without genuine power. Instead, a transformationist approach is required, one that can embrace the unique cultural identity of African-Americans while restructuring power and privilege in American society. Only a strategy of radical democracy can ultimately deconstruct race as a social force. Beyond Black and White brilliantly dissects the politics of race and class in the US of the 1990s. With the authorities labelling his mother as “morally depraved and of no benefit to society,” Lee and his siblings became wards of the government. Little did they realize it at the time, but they had just become part of the Sixties Scoop, the mass removal of Aboriginal children from their families into Canada’s child welfare system from the mid 1950s to the 1980s. While the Sixties Scoop exposed thousands of Aboriginal children to the horrors of the residential school system, Lee and his brother avoided that fate. Instead, they were placed with loving foster parents who raised the two boys as if they were their own. Lee is immensely thankful for the situation where he and his brother ended up. However, growing up in a white home as a visible minority in his community, completely cut off from his Aboriginal roots, still created many complications that he has had to cope with throughout his life, including racism, prejudice, and questions about his identity. In this gripping and honest memoir, Lee seeks to contextualize his experience within the trauma that so many other such forced abductions created and the broader colonial context within which they took place. Despite the darkness of these years, through it all comes a positive message of love, hope, and reconciliation for all.

But like a good magician who refuses to reveal secrets, they have left few clues about their work. Blue-Collar Broadway recovers the history of those people and the neighborhood in which their undersung labor occurred. Timothy R. White begins his history of the theater industry with the dispersed pre-Broadway era, when components such as costumes, lights, and scenery were built and stored nationwide. Subsequently, the majority of backstage operations and storage were consolidated in New York City during what is now known as the golden age of musical theater. Toward the latter half of the twentieth century, decentralization and deindustrialization brought the emergence of nationally distributed regional theaters and performing arts centers. The resulting collapse of New York's theater craft economy rocked the theater district, leaving abandoned buildings and criminal activity in place of studios and workshops.
