Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In his title poem Stan Banks makes reference to Langston Hughes. I like that. Hughes would be one hundred years old this year. Blue Beat Syncopation could be a tribute to him. It's obvious one will find a little Langston DNA in this book. This is not a crime but a link. Banks writes like someone just back from the Crossroads. Did he sell his soul to give us a collection of poems this good? This book is filled with survival music. The poems are like something Jacob Lawrence or Romare Bearden might have painted. Banks is a poet who has his face in the right window. I know many writers who have moved from the neighborhood and still try to call themselves blues people. If the year was 1926 Countee Cullen would be shaking his head about this collection too. Why is Banks so black and blue? The poems in Blue Beat Syncopation were written during the last twenty-five years. Banks has seen it all. Here is his montage of a poeple still not giving up on a dream." -- E. Ethelbert Miller, Foreword.

Download or read book The New Blue Music written by Richard J. Ripani and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2009-09-23 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rhythm & blues emerged from the African American community in the late 1940s to become the driving force in American popular music over the next half-century. Although sometimes called “doo-wop,” “soul,” “funk,” “urban contemporary,” or “hip-hop,” R&B is actually an umbrella category that includes all of these styles and genres. It is in fact a modern-day incarnation of a musical tradition that stretches back to nineteenth-century America, and even further to African beginnings. The New Blue Music: Changes in Rhythm & Blues, 1950-1999 traces the development of R&B from 1950 to 1999 by closely analyzing the top twenty-five songs of each decade. The music of artists as wide-ranging as Louis Jordan; John Lee Hooker; Ray Charles; James Brown; Earth, Wind & Fire; Michael Jackson; Public Enemy; Mariah Carey; and Usher takes center stage as the author illustrates how R&B has not only retained its traditional core style, but has also experienced a “re-Africanization” over time. By investigating musical elements of form, style, and content in R&B—and offering numerous musical examples—the book shows the connection between R&B and other forms of American popular and religious music, such as spirituals, ragtime, blues, jazz, country, gospel, and rock 'n' roll. With this evidence in hand, the author hypothesizes the existence of an even larger musical “super-genre” which he labels “The New Blue Music.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A collection of the early works of Theodore Sturgeon, acclaimed Grand Master of Science Fiction—featuring forewords by Ray Bradbury and Arthur C. Clarke Although Theodore Sturgeon's reach was limited to the lengths of the short story and novelette, his influence was strongly felt by even the most original science fiction stylists—including Ray Bradbury, Arthur C. Clarke, and Gene Wolfe. Written from 1937 to 1940, the stories here showcase Sturgeon's masterful knack for clever, O. Henry-ish plot twists, sparkling character development, and almost archetypal, “Why didn't I think of that?” story ideas. Early Sturgeon masterpieces include “It,” a story about the violence done by a creature spontaneously born from garbage and mud, and “Helix the Cat,” about an inventor's bizarre encounter with a disembodied soul and the cat that saves it. Featuring more than forty stories, The Ultimate Egoist is a timelessly entertaining tour through the early career and unique genius of this legend of science fiction.

Book Syncopation

Download or read book Syncopation written by Elizabeth Caulfield Felt and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Writer. Composer, Seductress. Liar. For humans there is only memory, and memory is unreliable. in nineteenth-century France, a woman's role was explicitly defined: she was a daughter, then a wife, then a mother. This view was held by novelist and poet Victor Hugo, but not by his daughter, pianist and poet Adèle Hugo. Under such constraints, what's a woman of passion to do? Syncopation, by Elizabeth Caulfield Felt, breathes life into the unconventional thoughts of this controversial female figure. An elderly Adèle recounts her desperate attempts to gain personal freedom. Her memoir blurs the fine line betwee truth and madness, in a narrative that is off-kilter, skewed, -- syncopated"--P. Author Vince Corozine thoroughly explores and demonstrates: blues and pentatonic scale theory, blue notes, grace notes, pedal-points, tremolos, trills, syncopation, anticipation, delayed beats, slash chords, boogie-woogie left-hand patterns, walking bass, stride piano style, straight eighths, swing eighths, passing tones, rolled chords, riffs, "filler" chords, substitutions, and comping styles.Ê This book also includes essential blues chord theory as well as tips on tasteful chord voicing presented in the context of accompanying a soloist (comping); in addition, the chord progressions represented by the written notation are carefully annotated in every example in the book. The Appendix includes helpful tips on comping, practice, and jazz soloing, plus a list of noteworthy jazz pianists, a key to chord symbols, and a glossary of jazz terms used in the book.
