Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly 100 illustrious fi ghter aces and test pilots have granted personal glimpses from their military careers to help create this tribute to Americas patriotic and heroic fliers. IN THEIR OWN WORDS - THE FINAL CHAPTER - TRUE STORIES FROM AMERICAN FIGHTER ACES illuminates what it took to fl y and survive in hostile enemy skies and to test our new and unforgiving fighter aircraft. When I f irst began compiling information, interviewing and corresponding with our legendary fighter pilots, there were about 600 of the original 1,473 fighter aces still with us. It is now 2011 and only 10% of our American fi ghter aces are still living. I, and other military aviation enthusiasts are indeed fortunate that this book will again honor and tell the fi rst person accounts of nearly 50% of these remarkable remaining fi ghter pilots. Th e goal of this book is to write the fi nal chapter to this stunning legacy. A great deal of our nations rich military heritage is about to become extinct. In a very few years all our ace fi ghter pilots will be gone. Th e fact that our country is still free and speaking English instead of Japanese or German bears witness to their extraordinary deeds and courage.

Download or read book Don t Mess with Travis written by Bob Smiley and published by Macmillan. This book was released on 2012-05-08 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A cowboy governor finds himself the accidental leader of Texas's right-wing revolution in this irreverent, entertaining debut novel. Written with the comedic mastery of Christopher Buckley, Don't Mess with Travis tells the story of Ben Travis, a no-name Texas senator who becomes governor after a late-night accident takes the lives of the men ahead of him in the chain of command. Before the paint has even dried on his parking spot, the recently divorced Travis uncovers the latest Washington power grab and decides there's only one solution: secession. The stunt pits Travis (and Texas) against the president, a golf-obsessed, progressive egomaniac with spotty leadership skills. The liberal elites are behind the president, and they will try every dirty trick to derail the new governor and hold on to the most prosperous state in the Union. Despite the doomsday threats from D.C., Travis forges ahead in a thrilling and hysterical quest to fight big-government tyranny and restore sanity to the nation. Can Travis avoid a second Civil War without bending his knee to Washington? Will his own daughter and ex-wife come to his aid or sell him out? Most important, can they get all this settled before the beginning of high school football season? In the tradition of Advise and Consent and Primary Colors, Don't Mess with Travis brilliantly lampoons all that's wrong with present-day politics while waving the flag behind everything that's right.

Book Burny s Journeys

Download or read book Burny s Journeys written by Brian Finkle and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's one man's story from childhood to his mid-fifties and counting. He never went looking for adventures or answers to life but because of timing, coincidences, synchronicities, (call it what you will) that started early and have never ended, he has been blessed with a lifetime of stories and then some. He spent his first twenty years in small town Iowa before the U.S. Army decided that they had a need for him. It was February of 1968 and it proved to be a bad time to be entering the military. After a year in Vietnam he came home intact but a changed young man. He packed up a van and headed west with everything he owned. (Except for the baseball cards that his parents had already thrown away. Damn!) After joining Vietnam Veterans Against the War (John Kerry was their president) he went to D.C. and threw his medals away on the Capitol steps with a thousand or so other vets who realized that as a country, we could make mistakes and this time we had. He was thrown in jail in Denver with 78 other vets for simply trying to march, as an organization, in the Veteran's Day Parade. It was a tough time for people to stand up to their government but he felt it was important and so did many people. Those actions changed the direction of our country. "Maybe something like this" the author suggests, "is needed again today". After some bad relationships, he hit the road for 2 1/2 years without an address to call his own. He spent two fairy tale winters in Mexico and Guatemala where he explored caves, found untouched ceynotes, met many characters as well as great friends, and all the while, he compiled stories. It was then that he began journaling and has never stopped nearly 30 years later and neither have the stories. He had the most vivid dream of his life, which magically, eventually led him to his lovely bride. They have now shared the past quarter of a century together including kids, and grandkids. It's all there along with the lessons and confessions.

Book The Novel Volume 1

Download or read book The Novel Volume 1 written by Franco Moretti and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-04-12 with total page 926 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly as global in its ambition and sweep as its subject, Franco Moretti's The Novel is a watershed event in the understanding of the first truly planetary literary form. A translated selection from the epic five-volume Italian Il Romanzo (2001-2003), The Novel's two volumes are a unified multiauthored reference work, containing more than one hundred specially commissioned essays by leading contemporary critics from around the world. Providing the first international comparative reassessment of the novel, these essential volumes reveal the form in unprecedented depth and breadth--as a great cultural, social, and human phenomenon that stretches from the ancient Greeks to today, where modernity itself is unimaginable without the genre. By viewing the novel as much more than an aesthetic form, this landmark collection demonstrates how the genre has transformed human emotions and behavior, and the very perception of reality. Historical, statistical, and formal analyses show the novel as a complex literary system, in which new forms proliferate in every period and place. Volume 1: History, Geography, and Culture, looks at the novel mostly from the outside, treating the transition from oral to written storytelling and the rise of narrative and fictionality, and covering the ancient Greek novel, the novel in premodern China, the early Spanish novel, and much else, including readings of novels from around the world. These books will be essential reading for all students and scholars of literature.

Book The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit

Download or read book The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit written by Charles Dickens and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2016-10-14 with total page 764 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considered to be the last picaresque novel he wrote, Charles Dickens's “The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit” was originally published as a serial between 1842 and 1844. One of his lesser-known literary works, it follows the story of two brothers, Martin and Jonas Chuzzlewit, who are driven to a life of crime and degeneracy thanks to a seemingly inherited selfishness and stubbornness. “The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit” is a classic of English literature that features some of the most memorable Dickensian villains. Charles John Huffam Dickens (1812–1870) was an English writer and social critic famous for having created some of the world's most well-known fictional characters. His works became unprecedentedly popular during his life, and today he is commonly regarded as the greatest Victorian-era novelist. Although perhaps better known for such works as “Great Expectations” or “A Christmas Carol”, Dickens first gained success with the 1836 serial publication of “The Pickwick Papers”, which turned him almost overnight into an international literary celebrity thanks to his humour, satire, and astute observations concerning society and character. This classic work is being republished now in a new edition complete with an introductory chapter from “Appreciations and Criticisms of the Works of Charles Dickens” by G. K. Chesterton.
