These obviously inspired gifts of poems, prayer, and wisdoms keep feeding the soul no matter how many times they are read. It is therefore a classic. Since poetry can break up past programming, it is a healer as it fires the mind and releases it of its agony, grief, and unwanted programmed reactions. This is not just another poetry book but a beautiful, pungent feast that awakens the highest within all people, cutting through beliefs to the feeling of the divine love within.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifth and most popular book of the Ramayana of Valmiki, the Sundarakanda, recounts the adventures of the monkey hero Hanuman in leaping across the ocean to the island citadel of Lanka. Once there, he scours the city for the abducted Princess Sita. The poet vividly describes the opulence of the court of the demon king, Ravana, the beauty of his harem, and the hideous deformity of Sita's wardresses. After witnessing Sita's stern rejection of Ravana's blandishments, Hanuman reveals himself to the princess and restores her hope of rescue. The great monkey then wreaks havoc on the royal park and fights a series of hair-raising battles with Ravana's generals. Permitting himself to be captured by the warrior Indrajit, Hanuman is led into the presence of Ravana, whom he admonishes for his lechery. His tail is set ablaze, but he escapes his bonds and leaping from rooftop to rooftop, sets fire to the city. Taking leave of Sita, Hanuman once more leaps the ocean to rejoin his monkey companions. This is the fifth volume translated from the critical edition of the Valmiki Ramayana. It contains an extensive introduction, exhaustive notes, and a comprehensive bibliography.

These two women have been performing in the Philadelphia area with singer Annie Geheb since 1991 as Voices of a Different Dream. The poets document their journey together and present their most performed work. Rooted in the natural world, the poetry embodies the struggle to come into full voice in a culture that often veils the truth. The poems convey a vital and passionate connection to the earth and celebrate the deep connections between people. Painter Sara Steele has described their work: "like a good line drawingsimple, intricate, clear." Singer-songwriter Ysaye Barnwell dubs their CD, You Know My Name, "a lovely experience." Download or read book Cities of Light written by Sandy Isenstadt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-12-17 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cities of Light is the first global overview of modern urban illumination, a development that allows human wakefulness to colonize the night, doubling the hours available for purposeful and industrious activities. Urban lighting is undergoing a revolution due to recent developments in lighting technology, and increased focus on sustainability and human-scaled environments. Cities of Light is expansive in coverage, spanning two centuries and touching on developments on six continents, without diluting its central focus on architectural and urban lighting. Covering history, geography, theory, and speculation in urban lighting, readers will have numerous points of entry into the book, finding it easy to navigate for a quick reference and or a coherent narrative if read straight through. With chapters written by respected scholars and highly-regarded contemporary practitioners, this book will delight students and practitioners of architectural and urban history, area and cultural studies, and lighting design professionals and the institutional and municipal authorities they serve. At a moment when the entire world is being reshaped by new lighting technologies and new design attitudes, the longer history of urban lighting remains fragmentary. Cities of Light aims to provide a global framework for historical studies of urban lighting and to offer a new perspective on the fast-moving developments of lighting today.

Download or read book Blossoms written by Maxine F. Singer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-04-13 with total page 179 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do plants, even if still buried underground, know that it's their time to bloom? What signals them to begin the challenging task of making flowers, and how do they make the variety of flower shapes, colours, and scents? What kind of instructions does the plant carry? Flowers enrich the beauty of meadows and gardens, but of course, they are not there simply to please us. Biologically, blossoms form a critical aspect of the reproductive cycle of many plants. In this book, the distinguished scientist Maxine Singer explains what we have pieced together about the genetics behind flowering. She describes in a clear and accessible account the key genes which, regulated by other genes, modulated by epigenetic effects, and responding to environmental cues, cause plants to flower at a particular time, and define the variety of flowers. The remarkably intricate processes involved in making flowers have evolved in nature alongside the pollinating birds and insects that the flowers must attract if there is to be another generation. The processes involved in flowering have only been unravelled in the past twenty years, and the implications for ensuring production of food, including fruits and seeds, are profound. This is cutting-edge science, and we have much still to learn, but the story being revealed that lies behind the flowers in our gardens, parks, and fields is proving astonishing.
