Book excerpt: In this heartfelt middle-grade novel that “brims with charm and compassion” (Vashti Harrison, New York Times bestselling author of Little Leaders), eleven-year-old G-baby must bring her family together when her little sister faces a dangerous illness "Love ain't like that." "How is it then?" Peaches asked, turning on her stomach to face me. "It's like sky. If you keep driving and driving, gas will run out, right?" "That's why we gotta go to the gas station." "Yep. But have you ever seen the sky run out? No matter how far we go?" "No, when we look up, there it is." "Well that's the kind of love Daddy and Mama got for us, Peaches -- love like sky." "It never ends?" "Never." G-baby and her younger sister, Peaches, are still getting used to their "blended-up" family. They live with Mama and Frank out in the suburbs, and they haven't seen their real daddy much since he married Millicent. G-baby misses her best friend back in Atlanta, and is crushed that her glamorous new stepsister, Tangie, wants nothing to do with her. G-baby is so preoccupied with earning Tangie's approval that she isn't there for her own little sister when she needs her most. Peaches gets sick-really sick. Suddenly, Mama and Daddy are arguing like they did before the divorce, and even the doctors at the hospital don't know how to help Peaches get better. It's up to G-baby to put things right. She knows Peaches can be strong again if she can only see that their family's love for her really is like sky.

Book Memoirs of a Lumbee Native American Boy

Download or read book Memoirs of a Lumbee Native American Boy written by Preston Chavis and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Keep turning, Mama, keep turning the steering wheel ' I told her. She kept turning the steering wheel until the steering wheel locked. By this time, Papa was wide awake. I turned and looked at him, and his eyes looked like they were going to pop out of the eye sockets. He was desperately trying to sit up on the rear seat. From the time Mama smashed down on that gas pedal, she had not slowed down any whatsoever, and Papa was unable to get up. I thought Mama was going to kill all of us. I don't know how she managed to miss the corncrib. Now she was headed for the woodpile. I quickly looked at Mama, expecting to see fear on her face like Papa and me. Instead she was sitting there hanging on to the steering wheel with a big smile on her face. She was driving all by herself and making her own decisions. She appeared to be enjoying the ride. Preston Chavis rarely had a dull moment growing up in Robeson County, North Carolina, in the thirties and forties. He taught his mama to drive when he was only seven, adopted a hill of red ants, disassembled his bike in hopes of making it better, and learned about the sanctity of life the hard way. As the son of a Lumbee Indian sharecropper, Preston struggled to overcome racism and poverty. Memoirs of a Lumbee Native American Boy is an inspirational story expertly blended with humor and life lessons.

Book excerpt: The Jolly Roger: A Story of Sea Heroes and Pirates (1891) is a novel by Hume Nisbet. Published at the beginning of his career as a leading ghost story writer of the Victorian era, The Jolly Roger: A Story of Sea Heroes and Pirates is a tale of adventure inspired by the author’s travels in Papua New Guinea. Largely unknown by today’s audience, Hume Nisbet was a versatile writer whose experiences as an artist and traveler inform his wide-ranging body of work. From the mind of one of Victorian England’s finest popular fiction writers comes a tale of swashbuckling adventure set during the tumultuous reign of King James I. The story opens on the island of Laverne, a notorious pirate stronghold set in protective waters along the coast of South America. From there, a group of brave and impossibly bold pirates embarks on a journey in search of fortune across the Spanish Main. Along the way, they nearly succumb to the wiles of a thousand-year-old witch, perhaps the most memorable of Nisbet’s creations, but certainly not the most terrifying. With scant source material, the author summons an era of wonder and discovery for modern day readers, a feat which depends in no small part upon his own adventures on the islands of the South Sea. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Hume Nisbet’s The Jolly Roger: A Story of Sea Heroes and Pirates is a classic of Victorian fiction reimagined for modern readers.

Book Mama s Boy

Download or read book Mama s Boy written by Robert Hood and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2006-08 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mama's Boy describes the life of author Robert Hood: his early years in a coal-mining village during the Depression, his life in the navy during World War II, and his later professional success. At the heart of Hood's memoir is his proud and talented mother, who is determined that her headstrong son will become somebody. But the impish boy is more interested in sports than poetry recitations or declamation contests. Anxious to enter the war, seventeen-year-old Hood enlists in the U.S. Navy in 1944 and serves on Guam. He returns, attends college, and eventually ends up in New York City as the editor-in-chief of Boys' Life Magazine. As Hood achieves success, he meets some of the distinguished artists and authors of the twentieth century. He lunches with Andre Kertesz, Alex Haley, and Isaac Asimov; takes tea with Salvador Dali and Philippe Halsman; and chats on the phone with Margaret Coit, Catherine Drinker Bowen, and Margaret Bourke-White. He also interviews great athletes such as Hank Greenberg, Mickey Mantle, and Willie Mays. But most important to Hood are those people in his family who mentored him so well. Mama's Boy pays tribute to his parents, grandparents, siblings, uncles, and aunt. His love for them bears witness to the endurance of human memory.

Book excerpt: I have fought through what seems like the depths of hell, just to only scratch the surface. I have felt more pain than the average woman should ever have the misfortune in coming into contact with. I have been devalued, tortured, beaten, raped and left for dead. But all I hear is the media calling me a cold hearted monster. I hear them say that I am unfit to walk with today’s society as if they knew the issue that had lead up to this. The public always listened to the media’s twists of ideas and lies. So much so that the public became brainwashed and began their so-called trial of prejudices. And the public bandwagons are always a strong deciding factor in a murder trial. They don’t know my struggles or pain. They don’t know about the fear that I had to deal with but yet they judge. I sit here in my prison cell with no fancy carpeting, just cold walls and damp floors. No exquisite dining, just a quickly put together tray. I have no friends...just parents. The inmates aren’t so bad, most of them have in-house bets going with the guards. The wager is on my verdict, whether im guilty or not guilty. Inmates ask me all the time if I could, would I take it all back? I just reply with a dense smile and a warm look but nothing more. I know that I would never take what I did to him back...ever. He deserved everything that I did to him and more. He had me fooled. He had everyone fooled except for Nikki. Deep in my heart I knew she was right. So many issues I felt uncomfortable with, but yet I continued. I chose not to listen, not to take a stand and I paid the price. I have been quiet, drowning for so long, but now...NOW it’s my turn. It’s time for me to tell the story and for everyone else to listen.

Book excerpt: The fourth in Jess Montgomery's evocative Kinship series, The Echoes combines exquisite storytelling with extraordinary crime plotting. "A beautifully written tour de force." —Linda Castillo on The Stills As July 4, 1928 approaches, Sheriff Lily Ross and her family look forward to the opening of an amusement park in a nearby town, created by Chalmer Fitzpatrick—a veteran and lumber mill owner. When Lily is alerted to the possible drowning of a girl, she goes to investigate, and discovers schisms going back several generations, in an ongoing dispute over the land on which Fitzpatrick has built the park. Lily's family life is soon rattled, too, with the revelation that before he died, her brother had a daughter, Esme, with a woman in France, and arrangements have been made for Esme to immigrate to the U.S. to live with them. But Esme never makes it to Kinship, and soon Lily discovers that she has been kidnapped. Not only that, but a young woman is indeed found murdered in the fishing pond on Fitzpatrick's property, at the same time that a baby is left on his doorstep. As the two crimes interweave, Lily must confront the question of what makes family: can we trust those we love? And what do we share, and what do we keep secret?
