Book excerpt: What if the church became more than a home for the hypocrites? What if the church became a hospital to heal the hurting? When the carnage of war broke out on D-Day, the wounded were brought to an empty, nearby church and laid on the pews so medics could treat them. When the war was over, and the blood-stained pews discovered, the townspeople decided to preserve the stains to remind all who would come afterward: This is the place where the wounded are welcome. Blood Stained Pews is a chance to examine Jesus’ original intent for the church, a hospital for the broken. Pastor and author Carl Kuhl is clear: Christians have been getting this wrong, but in this book, he gives clear steps to change our hearts, our practices, and ultimately our churches through the power of open brokenness. Through personal stories and powerful insights, Carl implores us to more deeply consider God’s grace and turn our churches into the places people run to when they’re wounded.

Book Blood on a Pew

Download or read book Blood on a Pew written by W. S. Gaines and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2011-07 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On June 18, 2003, at two thirty in the morning, my eldest son, Billy, fell through the tile ceiling of a church, crashing into a hard, wooden pew thirty feet below. At the time, he was temporarily staying in the shuttered convent of this Catholic church located just outside Pittsburgh and was attending a late-night party in the church rectory with a few of his University of Pittsburgh football teammates and the parish priest. The priest hosted the event and provided the alcohol. Every one of the football players in attendance, including my son, was underage. Tragically, later the same day, Billy was pronounced brain dead at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh. He was nineteen years old. Billy Gaines was a gifted athlete and promising wide receiver on the University of Pittsburgh football team. His untimely death shook his father, Bill Gaines, to the core. He felt grief as any parent would after the loss of a child. He also felt anger, not just toward the priest who provided alcohol to Billy that tragic night, but also toward God for letting Billy die. As the details surrounding his son's death surfaced, Bill faced some tough questions: What was Billy doing in a church crawlspace at two thirty in the morning? Who was responsible for Billy's death? What could he as a father have done to prevent Billy's death? Why did God allow Billy to die? As Bill Gaines puts the pieces together and tries to find answers to his questions, he finds himself on a spiritual journey. Join him as he finds healing and forgiveness in his faith and learns what led to Blood on a Pew.

Download or read book Jamesburg and Monroe Township Years Gone By written by John D. Katerba and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1896, Jamesburg, New Jersey, became an independent borough, and it is now considered to be the "hole in the doughnut" of surrounding Monroe Township. Jamesburg and Monroe Township have a shared history dating back to 1734, when the first mill appeared on the shores of Lake Manalapan. Early settler James Buckelew settled on the lake's banks in 1832, and he became the namesake of Jamesburg. Today, the area consists of .877 square miles and is home to approximately 6,000 residents. While Monroe Township's first settler dates back to 1685, the township's namesake, James Monroe (the fifth president), served as a captain of George Washington's Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. In the last 30 years, more changes occurred within Monroe Township than since its creation 181 years ago. The establishment of Leisure World retirement community, now Rossmoor, in 1965 marked the beginnings of major development within the town. Today, Monroe Township is 43.7 square miles with a population of approximately 50,000 residents.

This should have been easy, but nothing ever is, and her time to choose is running out. So much blood has spilled for this. The Outfit is in shambles, grieving and angry. The families just want peace. No one knows who will take the Chicago throne because too many men have a stake in this game. In wars like these, no one will let it go easily. Download or read book First Came Fear written by Charlotte Byrne and published by New Lit Salon Press. This book was released on 2018-10-19 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging as the dark side of Romanticism, horror is one of literature’s oldest genres. Its history is so diverse it’s sometimes difficult to define. Are moody stories about ghosts and vampires related to gory tales of beasts and zombies? And what about the more realistic terrors of murderous rogues and diabolical doctors? The emotion of fear unifies the 14 stories in First Came Fear: New Tales of Horror. But fear is legion in its varieties. The authors skillfully navigate terror of all types. M.P. Diederich’s “Dressage for Beginners” and Christopher Calix’s “The Wedding Gift” are fine examples of the ghoulish humor tradition while J.P. Whitmer’s “Loved to Death” will frighten you in a stunningly visceral way. Oliver Ledesma’s “Atabey” and Samantha Pilecki’s “Roser and the Guide to the Inexplicable” impart fear through non-traditional storytelling and Sarah K. Stephens’ “The Factory” shows how effectively, and chillingly, horror can tackle social issues. All the stories are accompanied by Luke Spooner’s dramatic art, which combines Gothic macabre with echoes of classic horror illustration. The entire collection will have you gripping the edge of your seat or biting your fingernails, yet leave you longing for more!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Civil War era cultural history examines how religious diversity in the Border North region foretold larger changes in American life. Gettysburg remains among the most legendary Civil War landmarks in the borderland between freedom and slavery. A century and a half after the great battle, Cemetery Hill, the Seminary and its ridge, and the Peach Orchard remain as powerful reminders of the past. They embody the small-town North and touch on themes vital to nineteenth-century religion. In Gettysburg Religion, author Steve Longenecker explores the religious history of antebellum and Civil War–era Gettysburg, shedding light on the remarkable diversity of American religion and its complex relationship with the broader culture. Longenecker argues that Gettysburg religion revealed much about American society, demonstrating that trends in the Border North mirrored national developments. In many ways, Gettysburg and its surrounding Border North religion belonged to the future and signaled the coming of modern America.

She inspires the people of the town to pull together to love and trust each other. At the same time her son, who is on drugs, finds a cure from a Mayan Curandero and becomes a new man. The ancient town moves into the modern age, keeping old traditions that matter, but dropping bad habits and taboos gathered over centuries. Once a human catalyst is active, many events can unfold. This story is based on real people, too moving to forget, who created co-operatives teaching new skills to women who had lost their husbands or had been abandoned. They learned that every individual has power to be used thoughtfully.

Book Sutherland Springs

Download or read book Sutherland Springs written by Joe Holley and published by Hachette Books. This book was released on 2020-03-17 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: **Winner of the 2021 Texas Institute of Letters Carr P. Collins’ Award for Best Book of Nonfiction** One part Columbine, one part God Save Texas, Joe Holley's riveting, compassionate book examines the 2017 mass shooting at a church in a small Texas town, revealing the struggles and triumphs of these fellow Texans long after the satellite news trucks have gone. Sutherland Springs was the last place anyone would have expected to be victimized by our modern-day scourge of mass shootings. Founded in the 1850s along historic Cibolo Creek, the tiny community, named for the designated physician during the siege of the Alamo, was once a vibrant destination for wealthy tourists looking to soak up the "cures" of its namesake mineral springs. By November 5, 2017, however, the day a former Air Force enlistee opened fire in the town's First Baptist Church, Sutherland Springs was a shadow of its former self. Twenty-six people died that Sunday morning, in the worst mass shooting in a place of worship in American history. Holley, who roams the Lone Star State as the "Native Texan" columnist for the Houston Chronicle and earned a Pulitzer- Prize nomination for his editorials about guns, spent more than a year embedded in the community. Long after most journalists had left, he stayed with his fellow Texans, getting to know a close-knit group of people - victims, heroes, and survivors. Holley shows how they work to come to terms with their loss and to rebuild shattered lives, marked by their deep faith in God and in guns. He also uses Sutherland Springs' unique history and its decades-long decline as a prism for understanding how an act of unspeakable violence reflects the complicated realities of Texas and America in the twenty-first century.
