Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acute organ damage and the ensuing multiple organ failure are the result of a pathophysiological process involving various cytokines. Once activated, these proteins cannot be eliminated even when the kidneys function at their maximum capacity. To counteract this mechanism, researchers in Japan have developed an innovative concept employing blood purification to remove the overwhelming cytokines. This book describes the use of hemodiafiltration to inhibit the cytokine storms which cause serious organ damage in patients with septic shock. Moreover, the technical construction of the blood purification system, which includes various machines, devices, membranes, fluids, etc., is explained in detail. Finally, leading experts discuss the concept of continuous renal replacement therapy as the standard care in critically ill patients with severe acute kidney injury.Describing the current state of acute blood purification, this publication provides new impulses and opens new avenues in the treatment of acute organ damage.

Book excerpt: We are pleased to present our readers the Proceedings of the International Symposium "New Perspectives in Hemodialysis, Peritoneal Dialysis, Arteriovenous Hemofiltration, and Plasma pheresis" which was held in Freiburg i. Br. (FRG) during Oct tober 6-8, 1988. The meeting was held on the occasion of opening the new dialysis unit of the University Hospital of Freiburg i. Br .. The topics discussed included membrane biocompatibility, catabolic factors associated with dialysis therapy, phar macological therapy in dialyzed patients, erythropoietin and renal anemia, new developments in CAVH, CAPD and plasmapheresis, renal replacement therapy in acute renal failure, and plasmapheresis therapy in systemic diseases. It was unfortunately impossible in this volume, to include the extended, lively and stimulating discussions which were enjoyed by the participants during the conference. The meeting has provided an unique framework for close interaction between scientists from various disciplines, including nephrology, pharmacology, hematology, cardiology, anesthesiology, surgery, intensive care medicine, and patho logy. We would like to express our gratitude and appreciation for all those who have stimulated, encouraged and supported us to hold the symposium in Freiburg. This endeaver could not have been possible without the generous financial support of Asid-Bonz (BOblingen), Bayer AG (Leverkusen), Bayropharm GmbH (Koln), Baxter (Munchen), Ciba-Geigy (Wehr/Baden), Cilag GmbH (Sulzbach), Fresenius AG (Oberursel), Gambro (Martinsried), Gry Pharma GmbH (Kirchzarten), Hoechst AG (Frankfurt), Hospal (Nurnberg), Knoll AG (Ludwigshafen), Lederle-Cyanamid (Wolfratshausen), E. The book presents the numerous recent developments in this field. A series of tailor-made, toxin removing and cell separating adsorbents or microcapsules with unique properties have been designed, prepared and produced for use in the treatment of diseases such as autoimmune disease, drug over-dose, acute inflammation, etc., in which ordinary medical treatments shows little or no efficacy. Various modalities of hemoperfusion treatments and results are described to provide readers with up-to-date information on the highly interdisciplinary field of hemoperfusion.

Book The ESC Textbook of Intensive and Acute Cardiovascular Care

Download or read book The ESC Textbook of Intensive and Acute Cardiovascular Care written by Marco Tubaro and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-03-08 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ESC Textbook of Intensive and Acute Cardiovascular Care is the official textbook of the Acute Cardiovascular Care Association (ACVC) of the ESC. Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a major cause of premature death worldwide and a cause of loss of disability-adjusted life years. For most types of CVD early diagnosis and intervention are independent drivers of patient outcome. Clinicians must be properly trained and centres appropriately equipped in order to deal with these critically ill cardiac patients. This new updated edition of the textbook continues to comprehensively approach all the different issues relating to intensive and acute cardiovascular care and addresses all those involved in intensive and acute cardiac care, not only cardiologists but also critical care specialists, emergency physicians and healthcare professionals. The chapters cover the various acute cardiovascular diseases that need high quality intensive treatment as well as organisational issues, cooperation among professionals, and interaction with other specialities in medicine. SECTION 1 focusses on the definition, structure, organisation and function of ICCU's, ethical issues and quality of care. SECTION 2 addresses the pre-hospital and immediate in-hospital (ED) emergency cardiac care. SECTIONS 3-5 discuss patient monitoring, diagnosis and specific procedures. Acute coronary syndromes (ACS), acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF), and serious arrhythmias form SECTIONS 6-8. The main other cardiovascular acute conditions are grouped in SECTION 9. Finally SECTION 10 is dedicated to the many concomitant acute non-cardiovascular conditions that contribute to the patients' case mix in ICCU. This edition includes new chapters such as low cardiac output states and cardiogenic shock, and pacemaker and ICDs: troubleshooting and chapters have been extensively revised. Purchasers of the print edition will also receive an access code to access the online version of the textbook which includes additional figures, tables, and videos to better to better illustrate diagnostic and therapeutic techniques and procedures in IACC. The third edition of the ESC Textbook of Intensive and Acute Cardiovascular Care will establish a common basis of knowledge and a uniform and improved quality of care across the field.
