Book excerpt: Abstract: The researcher examined the potential differences in lactate threshold, blood lactate concentrations, run time to exhaustion, and cardiorespiratory indices between menstrual cycle phases of eumenorrheic distance runners (25.1 Z 3.52 yrs). Testing was done in the early follicular phase (FP) , 2-4 days after the onset of bleeding and the mid-luteal phase (LP) , 6-8 days after ovulation. Ovulation was determined by a 0.3°C increase in basal body temperature. During each phase, the subjects performed a maximal effort test during which lactate threshold (LT) , peak lactate (peak . HLA), VO2 Max, and maximal heart rate (Max HR) were measured (N = 8), and an 85% submaximal run to voluntary exhaustion test during which blood lactate concentrations (HLA) , VO2 Ve, RER, RPE, end RPE, HR, and run time to exhaustion (RTE) were measured (N = 7). No significant differences (p > .05) were found between phases ln HLA, LT, Peak HLA, RER, RPE, Ve, VO2 VO2 Max, Max HR, HR, RER, and RTE. These results suggest that menstrual cycle phase has no effect on metabolic responses, cardiorespiratory responses, or performance parameters of eumenorrheic distance runners.
