Book excerpt: You Can Almost Taste the Old West! Renowned for his detailed research and compelling characters, Earl Murray is an esteemed name in the historical fiction of the American Frontier and he proves it again in his newest novel of Old California. Los Angeles . . . in the1850s. John Dimas, a California Ranger goes undercover, following treacherous trails deep into the Sierra Nevada gold country in an attempt to do the impossible--infiltrate the elusive band of California's most notorious desperado, the feared Joaquin Murrieta. The course of this journey will take Dimas through a beautiful but perilous land, searching the daytime arenas where bullfights entertain bloodthirsty audiences, the midnight faro games and fandango halls where knife and pistol rule the night. Along the way, he will meet Maura Walsh, a beautiful lady of means come to unite with her fiancé, Trenton Kerns, a man with a dangerous connection to the evil and powerful Don Luis Markham. In a twist of treacherous fate, Dimas' secret mission will place him squarely in Markham's path. It is a confrontation he cannot hope to win. . . . Set against the raw turbulence and sudden violence of California's Gold Rush and the exploits of the famed Joaquin Murietta--the real-life inspiration for Zorro--Earl Murray's riveting new novel wonderfully re-creates a fascinating period in American history with the tension of a high-voltage thriller. Book A Leaf In The Bitter Wind

Download or read book A Leaf In The Bitter Wind written by Ting-Xing Ye and published by Anchor Canada. This book was released on 2012-07-31 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the best ways to understand history is through eye-witness accounts. Ting-Xing Ye’s riveting first book, A Leaf in the Bitter Wind, is a memoir of growing up in Maoist China. It was an astonishing coming of age through the turbulent years of the Cultural Revolution (1966 - 1974). In the wave of revolutionary fervour, peasants neglected their crops, exacerbating the widespread hunger. While Ting-Xing was a young girl in Shanghai, her father’s rubber factory was expropriated by the state, and he was demoted to a labourer. A botched operation left him paralyzed from the waist down, and his health deteriorated rapidly since a capitalist’s well-being was not a priority. He died soon after, and then Ting-Xing watched her mother’s struggle with poverty end in stomach cancer. By the time she was thirteen, Ting-Xing Ye was an orphan, entrusted with her brothers and sisters to her Great-Aunt, and on welfare. Still, the Red Guards punished the children for being born into the capitalist class. Schools were being closed; suicide was rampant; factories were abandoned for ideology; distrust of friends and neighbours flourished. Ting-Xing was sent to work on a distant northern prison farm at sixteen, and survived six years of backbreaking labour and severe conditions. She was mentally tortured for weeks until she agreed to sign a false statement accusing friends of anti-state activities. Somehow finding the time to teach herself English, often by listening to the radio, she finally made it to Beijing University in 1974 as the Revolution was on the wane — though the acquisition of knowledge was still frowned upon as a bourgeois desire and study was discouraged. Readers have been stunned and moved by this simply narrated personal account of a 1984-style ideology-gone-mad, where any behaviour deemed to be bourgeois was persecuted with the ferocity and illogic of a witch trial, and where a change in politics could switch right to wrong in a moment. The story of both a nation and an individual, the book spans a heady 35 years of Ye’s life in China, until her eventual defection to Canada in 1987 — and the wonderful beginning of a romance with Canadian author William Bell. The book was published in 1997. The 1990s saw the publication of several memoirs by Chinese now settled in North America. Ye’s was not the first, yet earned a distinguished place as one of the most powerful, and the only such memoir written from Canada. It is the inspiring story of a woman refusing to “drift with the stream” and fighting her way through an impossible, unjust system. This compelling, heart-wrenching story has been published in Germany, Japan, the US, UK and Australia, where it went straight to #1 on the bestseller list and has been reprinted several times; Dutch, French and Turkish editions will appear in 2001.

Book excerpt: Can time become stuck at NOW or does it just seem that way? Can the past be changed without creating a paradox? Does history repeat or is that something we tell ourselves to cover our poor choices? When Alexander 'Ramses' Smith is assigned to decipher the odd hieroglyphs of the Temple of Khnum-all heka (magic) breaks loose. As a teen, his interest was in metaphysical and sharing psychic experiences with a beloved grandmother. When she died, things turned dark when an Ouija Board freed a terrifying entity with red eyes. He thought he was free of it when he shut his psychic gifts down and began a study of Egyptology-But Shezmu was waiting for him in Esna. Lex found others trapped by the time loop: afret (djinni), the ghost of a former archeologist, Dr. Broderick S. Gillwood, the Neteru (Egyptian gods/goddesses) all conspiring against his scientific training and logical mind. Lex soon realizes there is no choice but to obey the voices in his head and the mysterious ones of an outer sort. He must rely on the intuitive gifts he fought so hard to quash. Realizing he can see and sense what others cannot, Lex runs headlong into a past life that puts him dangerously susceptible to the hidden secrets infused in the stone ruins. He must quickly re-define his understanding of the lines between imagination and reality or lose the battle for his mind with the darkness created by blood sorcery and a destiny (shay) he never expected.

Book Charles Tyrrell The Bitter Blood Complete

Download or read book Charles Tyrrell The Bitter Blood Complete written by George Payne Rainsford James and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 483 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among all the many fine and beautiful figures and modes of reasoning that the universe in which we dwell has afforded for the illustration of the bright hope that is within us of a life renewed beyond the tomb, there is none more beautiful or more exquisite, that I know of, than that which is derived from the seasons; from the second life that bursts forth in spring in objects apparently dead, and from the shadowing forth in the renovation of everything around us of that after destiny which divine revelation calls upon our faith to believe shall yet be ours. The trees, that have faded and remained dark and gray through the long, dreary lapse of winter, clothe themselves again in green in the spring sunshine, and every leaf and every hue speaks of life. The birds that were mute sing again as tunefully as ever; the flowers that were trampled down and faded burst forth once more, in freshness and in beauty; the streams break from the icy chains that held them, and the glorious sun himself comes wandering back from his far journey, giving summer and warmth, and fertility and magnificence to everything around. All that we see breathes of the same hope; everything that we see rekindles into life. But, on the other hand, there are things within us that awake no more; there are feelings in our hearts that, passed away, return not; there are thoughts that can never be thought again: there are hopes that, once put out, are put out for ever. These are the things that speak to us of death! These are the things that would darken our hopes of immortality, were we not to draw from them inferences of a higher state of being, where love, and confidence, and happiness are not delusions; where the plant of enjoyment has not its root in the earth, and where the flowers of life wither not away. There are certainly changes in our very nature which would fill our bosoms with many dark and awful doubts, did we not find that, in the well-regulated mind, the bright and intoxicating dreams of early youth, the love that has been crushed or thwarted, the confidence that has been a thousand times betrayed, may give place to firmer and more solid things, feelings not so exquisite, but more deep and powerful; thoughts not so brilliant, but more just and true, did we not find that, with proper cultivation, the flowers made way for fruit; did we not find that every stage of existence would have, but for our own faults, its proper class of enjoyments, and that every stage but leads us on towards an appreciation of that last noblest state of being, for which all the rest are but a preparation. If we are immortal, is it not well that we should find earth's flowers fade? If we are immortal, is it not well that we should find earth's hopes deceive us? If we are immortal, is it not well that we should learn to regret the passing away of bright capabilities in our own nature, which are sure to be renewed extended, multiplied in heaven?

Book excerpt: A novel set in the underbelly of upstate New York that's as hardboiled and punchy as a swift right hook to the jaw, a classic noir for fans of James Ellroy and John D. Macdonald. Isaiah Coleridge is a mob enforcer in Alaska--he's tough, seen a lot, and dished out more. But when he forcibly ends the money-making scheme of a made man, he gets in the kind of trouble that can lead to a bullet behind the ear. Saved by the grace of his boss and exiled to upstate New York, Isaiah begins a new life, a quiet life without gunshots or explosions. Except a teenage girl disappears, and Isaiah isn't one to let that slip by. And delving into the underworld to track this missing girl will get him exactly the kind of notice he was warned to avoid. At turns brutally shocking and darkly funny, heartbreaking and cautiously hopeful, Blood Standard is both a high-tension crime novel and the story of a man's second chance--the parts of his past he will never escape, and the parts that will shape his future.
