The Asia-Pacific region which has the largest number of small holder farmers and is trying to meet the sustainable development goals of United Nations has lot of responsibilities to mitigate the challenges. In this scenario Blockchain Technology has come as a respite to contribute as one of the ways to mitigate the challenges. The benefits of Blockchain in agriculture include easy and cheap food batch recalls in case of emergencies, availability of the complete history of the product status, increased customer trust and loyalty, fairer payments, approved vendors, and proper compliance management. The global blockchain in agriculture and food supply chain market size estimated at USD 133 million in 2020 is expected to reach USD 948 million by 2025. Factors such as the increasing need to lower operational costs in financial transactions and the reduction of the number of layers required for data sharing and risk management and the regulatory compliances that automate and conduct only authorized transactions are driving the technology adoption. The key drivers to blockchain in agriculture and food supply chain market are an increase in demand for the agricultural produce output surge, the use of smart agriculture among the growers or producers, government initiatives to support modern techniques that can be used in agriculture, and rising concerns for food safety among the consumers driving the increase in demand for the transparency in the supply chain. This publication establishes chain traceability as the substrate over which digital solutions need to operate. It provides a comprehensive introduction to blockchain, and covers smart contracts, explores how they relate to blockchain with an example of their use in seafood value chains, and then examines major development and operational considerations for blockchain applications. Above all, it is increasingly coming to the public's attention because of its many possible applications. Basically, the blockchain is a public register that enables users to collaborate in a trustworthy and transparent manner. The blockchain system connects all participants in a peer-to-peer network, so no intermediaries are required. In addition to the financial sector, supply chain management is also mentioned in various publications as an important application area for the technology. The food supply chain in particular is increasingly coming into focus due to the increasing complexity and internationalisation of supply chains, as well as the demand for transparency on the part of customers against the backdrop of sustainability. The goals of blockchain technology in the food supply chain include optimising the international exchange of goods and its documentation, minimising the need for middlemen, traceability, and real-time localisation of products. Retail giants, such as Walmart and Carrefour, recognised the potential of the technology early on and rely on IBM Food Trust to map their own product portfolio as transparently as possible.
