Book Block structured Adaptive Mesh Refinement Theory Implementation and Application

Download or read book Block structured Adaptive Mesh Refinement Theory Implementation and Application written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structured adaptive mesh refinement (SAMR) techniques can enable cutting-edge simulations of problems governed by conservation laws. Focusing on the strictly hyperbolic case, these notes explain all algorithmic and mathematical details of a technically relevant implementation tailored for distributed memory computers. An overview of the background of commonly used finite volume discretizations for gas dynamics is included and typical benchmarks to quantify accuracy and performance of the dynamically adaptive code are discussed. Large-scale simulations of shock-induced realistic combustion in non-Cartesian geometry and shock-driven fluid-structure interaction with fully coupled dynamic boundary motion demonstrate the applicability of the discussed techniques for complex scenarios.

Book Adaptive Mesh Refinement Theory and Applications

Download or read book Adaptive Mesh Refinement Theory and Applications written by Tomasz Plewa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2005-12-20 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced numerical simulations that use adaptive mesh refinement (AMR) methods have now become routine in engineering and science. Originally developed for computational fluid dynamics applications these methods have propagated to fields as diverse as astrophysics, climate modeling, combustion, biophysics and many others. The underlying physical models and equations used in these disciplines are rather different, yet algorithmic and implementation issues facing practitioners are often remarkably similar. Unfortunately, there has been little effort to review the advances and outstanding issues of adaptive mesh refinement methods across such a variety of fields. This book attempts to bridge this gap. The book presents a collection of papers by experts in the field of AMR who analyze past advances in the field and evaluate the current state of adaptive mesh refinement methods in scientific computing.

Download or read book Structured Adaptive Mesh Refinement SAMR Grid Methods written by Scott B. Baden and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers presented here describe research to improve the general understanding of the application of SAMR to practical problems, to identify issues critical to efficient and effective implementation on high performance computers, and to stimulate the development of a community code repository for software including benchmarks to assist in the evaluation of software and compiler technologies. The ten chapters have been divided into two parts: programming complexity of SAMR algorithms and the applicability and numerical challenges of SAMR methods.

Book Parallel Block Structured Adaptive Mesh Refinement on Graphics Processing Units

Download or read book Parallel Block Structured Adaptive Mesh Refinement on Graphics Processing Units written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Block-structured adaptive mesh refinement is a technique that can be used when solving partial differential equations to reduce the number of zones necessary to achieve the required accuracy in areas of interest. These areas (shock fronts, material interfaces, etc.) are recursively covered with finer mesh patches that are grouped into a hierarchy of refinement levels. Despite the potential for large savings in computational requirements and memory usage without a corresponding reduction in accuracy, AMR adds overhead in managing the mesh hierarchy, adding complex communication and data movement requirements to a simulation. In this paper, we describe the design and implementation of a native GPU-based AMR library, including: the classes used to manage data on a mesh patch, the routines used for transferring data between GPUs on different nodes, and the data-parallel operators developed to coarsen and refine mesh data. We validate the performance and accuracy of our implementation using three test problems and two architectures: an eight-node cluster, and over four thousand nodes of Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Titan supercomputer. Our GPU-based AMR hydrodynamics code performs up to 4.87× faster than the CPU-based implementation, and has been scaled to over four thousand GPUs using a combination of MPI and CUDA.

Book excerpt: The GAMM Committee for "Efficient Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations" organizes workshops on subjects concerning the algorithmical treat ment of partial differential equations. The topics are discretization methods like the finite element and finite volume method for various types of applications in structural and fluid mechanics. Particular attention is devoted to advanced solu tion techniques. th The series of such workshops was continued in 1993, January 22-24, with the 9 Kiel-Seminar on the special topic "Adaptive Methods Algorithms, Theory and Applications" at the Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel. The seminar was attended by 76 scientists from 7 countries and 23 lectures were given. The list of topics contained general lectures on adaptivity, special discretization schemes, error estimators, space-time adaptivity, adaptive solvers, multi-grid me thods, wavelets, and parallelization.
