Book Block based Compressed Sensing of Images and Video

Download or read book Block based Compressed Sensing of Images and Video written by James E. Fowler and published by Foundations and Trends(r) in S. This book was released on 2012 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Block-Based Compressed Sensing of Images and Video overviews the emerging concept of compressed sensing (CS) with a particular focus on recent proposals for its use with a variety of imaging media, including still images, motion video, as well as multiview images and video. Throughout, it considers a variety of CS reconstruction techniques proposed in recent literature and examines relative performance of several prominent reconstruction algorithms for each of the various imagery formats. Particular emphasis is placed on block-based measurement and reconstruction which has the advantages of significantly reduced memory and computation with respect to other approaches relying on full-frame CS measurement operators. Block-Based Compressed Sensing of Images and Video employs extensive experimental comparisons to evaluate various prominent reconstruction algorithms for still-image, motion-video, and multiview scenarios in terms of both reconstruction quality as well as computational complexity. It is not intended to serve as an indepth tutorial on the theory or mathematics of compressed sensing. The coverage of CS theory is brief, while the specifics of the application of block-based compressed sensing (BCS) to natural imagery consume the bulk of the discussion.

Book Block Based Compressed Sensing of Images and Video

Download or read book Block Based Compressed Sensing of Images and Video written by James E. Fowler and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of techniques for the compressed sensing of imagery are surveyed. Various imaging media are considered, including still images, motion video, as well as multiview image sets and multiview video. A particular emphasis is placed on block-based compressed sensing due to its advantages in terms of both lightweight reconstruction complexity as well as a reduced memory burden for the random-projection measurement operator. For multiple-image scenarios, including video and multiview imagery, motion and disparity compensation is employed to exploit frame-to-frame redundancies due to object motion and parallax, resulting in residual frames which are more compressible and thus more easily reconstructed from compressed-sensing measurements. Extensive experimental comparisons evaluate various prominent reconstruction algorithms for still-image, motion-video, and multiview scenarios in terms of both reconstruction quality as well as computational complexity.

Book Block Compressed Sensing of Images and Video

Download or read book Block Compressed Sensing of Images and Video written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compressed sensing is an emerging approach for signal acquisition wherein theory has shown that a small number of linear, random projection of a signal contains enough information for reconstruction of the signal. Despite its potential to enable lightweight and inexpensive sensing hardware that simultaneously combines signal acquisition and dimensionality reduction, the compressed sensing of images and video still entails several challenges, in particular, a sensing-measurement operator which is difficult to apply in practice due to the heavy memory and computational burdens. Block-based random image sampling coupled with a projection-driven compressed-sensing recovery is proposed to address this challenge. For images, the block-based image acquisition is coupled with reconstruction driven by a directional transform and statistical model based thresholding that encourages spatial sparsity. Also considered is an extension of the basic reconstruction algorithm that incorporates block-based measurements in the domain of a wavelet transform. The pro- posed image recovery algorithm and its extension yield images with quality that matches or exceeds that produced by a popular, yet computationally expensive, technique which minimizes total variation with a significantly less computational complexity. For video, motion estimation and compensation is utilized to promote temporal sparsity. A residual between the current frame and the previous frame compensated by object motion is shown to be more sparse than the original frame itself. By using residual reconstruction, information contained in the previous frame contributes to the reconstruction of the current frame. The proposed block-based compressed-sensing reconstruction for video outperforms a simple frame-by-frame reconstruction as well as a 3D volumetric reconstruction in terms of visual quality. Finally, quantization of block-based compressed-sensing measurements is considered in order to generate a true bitstream from a compressed-sensing image acquisition. Specifically, a straightforward process of quantization via simple uniform scalar quantization applied in conjunction with differential pulse code modulation of the block-based compressedsensing measurements is proposed. Experimental results demonstrate significant improvement in rate-distortion performance as compared scalar quantization used alone in several block-based compressed-sensing reconstruction algorithms as well as that of alternative quantized-compressed-sensing techniques relying on optimized quantization or reconstruction is observed.

Book Image and Video Compression

Download or read book Image and Video Compression written by Madhuri A. Joshi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-11-17 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Image and video signals require large transmission bandwidth and storage, leading to high costs. The data must be compressed without a loss or with a small loss of quality. Thus, efficient image and video compression algorithms play a significant role in the storage and transmission of data. Image and Video Compression: Fundamentals, Techniques, and Applications explains the major techniques for image and video compression and demonstrates their practical implementation using MATLAB® programs. Designed for students, researchers, and practicing engineers, the book presents both basic principles and real practical applications. In an accessible way, the book covers basic schemes for image and video compression, including lossless techniques and wavelet- and vector quantization-based image compression and digital video compression. The MATLAB programs enable readers to gain hands-on experience with the techniques. The authors provide quality metrics used to evaluate the performance of the compression algorithms. They also introduce the modern technique of compressed sensing, which retains the most important part of the signal while it is being sensed.

Book The Use of Compressive Sensing in Video

Download or read book The Use of Compressive Sensing in Video written by and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compressed Sensing (CS) is a recently developed tool for signal acquisition and compression in a single stage. In this thesis, we explore the nascent field of compressive sensing for images and video. The performance of different CS acquisition and reconstruction schemes for images are compared and analyzed. The quality of reconstruction corresponding to different measurement fractions is observed. Frame-by-frame mode and video block mode of CS for video are explored. Hybrid schemes that combine the ideas of CS and that of traditional video compression algorithms are studied. Specifically, two schemes, one having two layers of linear measurements at the encoder and two rounds of reconstruction at the decoder, and a second scheme using iterative reweighting along with morphological image processing at the decoder to reconstruct with better quality for lesser measurements are implemented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a platform of scientific interaction between the three challenging and closely linked areas of ICT-enabled-application research and development: software intensive systems, complex systems and intelligent systems. Software intensive systems strongly interact with other systems, sensors, actuators, devices, other software systems and users. More and more domains are using software intensive systems, e.g. automotive and telecommunication systems, embedded systems in general, industrial automation systems and business applications. Moreover, web services offer a new platform for enabling software intensive systems. Complex systems research is focused on the overall understanding of systems rather than their components. Complex systems are characterized by the changing environments in which they interact. They evolve and adapt through internal and external dynamic interactions. The development of intelligent systems and agents, which are increasingly characterized by their use of ontologies and their logical foundations, offer impulses for both software intensive systems and complex systems. Recent research in the field of intelligent systems, robotics, neuroscience, artificial intelligence, and cognitive sciences are vital for the future development and innovation of software intensive and complex systems.
