Book excerpt: "Beauvoir in Time situates Simone de Beauvoir's The Second Sex in the historical context of its writing and in later contexts of its international reception, from then till now. The book takes up three aspects of Beauvoir's work more recent feminists find embarrassing: "bad sex," "dated" views about lesbians, and intersections with race and class. Through close reading of her writing in many genres, alongside contemporaneous discourses (good and bad novels in French and English, outmoded psychoanalytic and sexological authorities, ethnographic surrealism, the writing of Richard Wright and Franz Fanon), and in light of her travels to the U.S. and China, the author uncovers insights more recent feminist methodologies obscure, showing Beauvoir is still good to think with today"--

Book excerpt: In all parts of Asia, households devote considerable expenditures to private supplementary tutoring. This tutoring may contribute to students' achievement, but it also maintains and exacerbates social inequalities, diverts resources from other uses, and can contribute to inefficiencies in education systems. Such tutoring is widely called shadow education, because it mimics school systems. As the curriculum in the school system changes, so does the shadow. This study documents the scale and nature of shadow education in different parts of the region. Shadow education has been a major phenomenon in East Asia and it has far-reaching economic and social implications.

Download or read book The Adventures of Sh h Esm il written by Barry Wood and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Adventures of Shāh Esmāʿil recounts the dramatic formative years of the Safavid empire (1501–1722), as preserved in Iranian popular memory by coffeehouse storytellers and written down in manuscripts starting in the late seventeenth century. Beginning with the Safavids’ saintly ancestors in Ardabil, the story goes on to relate the conquests of Shāh Esmāʿil (r. 1501–1524) and his devoted Qezelbāsh followers as they battle Torkmāns, Uzbeks, Ottomans, and even Georgians and Ethiopians in their quest to establish a Twelver Shiʿi realm. Barry Wood’s translation brings out the verve and popular tone of the Persian text. A heady mixture of history and legend, The Adventures of Shāh Esmāʿil sheds important light on the historical self-awareness of late Safavid Iran.

Book Why Fairy Tales Stick

Download or read book Why Fairy Tales Stick written by Jack Zipes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In his latest book, fairy tales expert Jack Zipes explores the question of why some fairy tales "work" and others don't, why the fairy tale is uniquely capable of getting under the skin of culture and staying there. Why, in other words, fairy tales "stick." Long an advocate of the fairy tale as a serious genre with wide social and cultural ramifications, Jack Zipes here makes his strongest case for the idea of the fairy tale not just as a collection of stories for children but a profoundly important genre. Why Fairy Tales Stick contains two chapters on the history and theory of the genre, followed by case studies of famous tales (including Cinderella, Snow White, and Bluebeard), followed by a summary chapter on the problematic nature of traditional storytelling in the twenty-first century.

Book Approaches to Ibadi Exegetical Tradition

Download or read book Approaches to Ibadi Exegetical Tradition written by Ismail Albayrak and published by Harrassowitz. This book was released on 2020-07-08 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ibadis are a minority Muslim group whose history goes back to the early period of Islam. Today they mainly live in Oman, Zanzibar, and some parts of North Africa (Algeria, Tunisia and Libya). A long-lasting cliche that associates Ibadis with early Kharijites (puritans and fanatics) creates a great impediment in understanding this group. Although in recent years literature about the origins, socio-economic, political, theological and intellectual history of the Iba?is has been growing rapidly, there are very few studies on their history of Qur'an exegesis. This study by Ismail Albayrak analyzes various approaches to Ibadi exegetical tradition to find an answer to the following questions: How different are Ibadi exegeses compared to mainstream Muslim exegetical tradition? Can one talk about particular Ibadi exegetical methodologies? Why Ibadis have produced so little in this genre? How diverse is the Ibadi exegetical tradition with special reference to the notion of 'return of Jesus'? Using the main and updated Ibadi sources, the book contributes not only to the exegetical and theological understanding of Ibadism but also to its history, politics, culture, geography, sociology, folklore and anthropology. Beyond that, the study shows that Ibadi groups were not immune to the pressures of modernity and reacted in a similar manner as other Muslim communities regarding many issues.

Download or read book The Power of Interest for Motivation and Engagement written by K Ann Renninger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-19 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Power of Interest for Motivation and Engagement describes the benefits of interest for people of all ages. Using case material as illustrations, the volume explains that interest can be supported to develop, and that the development of a person's interest is always motivating and results in meaningful engagement. This volume is written for people who would like to know more about the power of their interests and how they could develop them: students who want to be engaged, educators and parents wondering about how to facilitate motivation, business people focusing on ways in which they could engage their employees and associates, policy-makers whose recognition of the power of interest may lead to changes resulting in a new focus supporting interest development for schools, out of school activity, industry, and business, and researchers studying learning and motivation. It draws on research in cognitive, developmental, educational, and social psychology, as well as in the learning sciences, and neuroscience to demonstrate that there is power for everyone in leveraging interest for motivation and engagement.

Book Occupational Therapy Practice Guidelines for Older Adults with Low Vision

Download or read book Occupational Therapy Practice Guidelines for Older Adults with Low Vision written by Jennifer Kaldenberg and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. population is aging, and occupational therapy practitioners working with older adults must have the skills to address multiple health issues, including vision loss. Although typical aging does not cause low vision, four major causes of vision impairment are directly related to the aging process: (1) age-related macular degeneration (AMD), (2) diabetic retinopathy, (3) glaucoma, and (4) cataracts. Instances of these impairments are expected to double by the year 2050, making low vision a significant public health issue. This Practice Guideline includes occupational therapy assessment and intervention guidelines for older adults who have visual acuity impairments, visual field impairments, or both as a result of a low vision diagnosis. Screening, referral, and evaluation are covered for clients for central visual field impairments, such as AMD and cataract; peripheral field impairments, such as glaucoma, hemianopsia, and quadrantanopsia; and mixed visual field loss, such as diabetic retinopathy. This work can help occupational therapists and occupational therapy assistants, as well as individuals who manage, reimburse, or set policy regarding occupational therapy services, understand the contribution of occupational therapy to treating older adults with low vision. Appendixes include selected diagnostic and billing codes and evidence tables.
