Book excerpt: There's a running joke among radiologists: finding a tumor in a mammogram is akin to finding a snowball in a blizzard. A bit of medical gallows humor, this simile illustrates the difficulties of finding signals (the snowball) against a background of noise (the blizzard). Doctors are faced with similar difficulties every day when sifting through piles of data from blood tests to X-rays to endless lists of patient symptoms. Diagnoses are often just educated guesses, and prognoses less certain still. There is a significant amount of uncertainty in the daily practice of medicine, resulting in confusion and potentially deadly complications. Dr. Steven Hatch argues that instead of ignoring this uncertainty, we should embrace it. By digging deeply into a number of rancorous controversies, from breast cancer screening to blood pressure management, Hatch shows us how medicine can fail-sometimes spectacularly-when patients and doctors alike place too much faith in modern medical technology. The key to good health might lie in the ability to recognize the hype created by so many medical reports, sense when to push a physician for more testing, or resist a physician's enthusiasm when unnecessary tests or treatments are being offered. Both humbling and empowering, Snowball in a Blizzard lays bare the inescapable murkiness that permeates the theory and practice of modern medicine. Essential reading for physicians and patients alike, this book shows how, by recognizing rather than denying that uncertainty, we can all make better health decisions.

Book excerpt: Drawing on unpublished documents and oral histories, an illustrated examination of an iconic artwork of an artist who has made a lifework of tactical evasion. One wintry day in 1983, alongside other street sellers in the East Village, David Hammons peddled snowballs of various sizes. He had neatly laid them out in graduated rows and spent the day acting as obliging salesman. He called the evanescent and unannounced street action Bliz-aard Ball Sale, thus inscribing it into a body of work that, from the late 1960s to the present, has used a lexicon of ephemeral actions and self-consciously “black" materials to comment on the nature of the artwork, the art world, and race in America. And although Bliz-aard Ball Sale has been frequently cited and is increasingly influential, it has long been known only through a mix of eyewitness rumors and a handful of photographs. Its details were as elusive as the artist himself; even its exact date was unrecorded. Like so much of the artist's work, it was conceived, it seems, to slip between our fingers—to trouble the grasp of the market, as much as of history and knowability. In this engaging study, Elena Filipovic collects a vast oral history of the ephemeral action, uncovering rare images and documents, and giving us singular insight into an artist who made an art of making himself difficult to find. And through it, she reveals Bliz-aard Ball Sale to be the backbone of a radical artistic oeuvre that transforms such notions as “art,” “commodity,” “performance,” and even “race” into categories that shift and dissolve, much like slowly melting snowballs.

Book Grandpa s Stories

Download or read book Grandpa s Stories written by Ronald (Ronn) L. Shank and published by Author House. This book was released on 2012-09-17 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of years ago now as one of my grandsons first birthday approached I thought about what to give a one year old. There are a million things that will be played with for a short while then either broken or ignored. I wanted to give something special, something lasting, something that even when older he might still enjoy. Then it struck me, since he likes the silly little stories I tell him upon his request, that maybe I could write some cute little short stories, with a moral as well, just for him (and any of my other grandchildren as well when shared). Thats all it took to get me started. Since then each year I write a little story that somehow relates to something in his life. When another grandchild came along he also was added to the list of recipients of original stories. When I got to thinking about it I decided there may be other grandparents that would like to spend time with their grandchild reading a little story. Now a few years down the pike and I have enough for a book. And so herein I offer my readers a chance to share the joy of time spent reading to a child. That is why my stories were written in the first place. Children go through phases as with my grandchildren there were the dinosaurs, whales, (especially the blue whale), hedge hogs, puppies and gold fish. Im sure you get my drift. All of these fed my imagination and help to produce stories that have a connection and personal touch for both the child and me. These stories are not written for children to read, but rather for a loving adult to sit down with child on their lap or side by side on a shared sofa and be read to. I recommend using funny voices and lots of emphasis and maybe a tickle or two at just the right moment to add flavor and a garnish to each story. The giggles, like sparklers on the 4th of July, will shower joy in all directions and warm the heart of the one reading the story and those close by. Do not be concerned about the content all the stories contained in this book are rated PG - (to be read by Parent or Grandparent). I hope you will enjoy these short stories even more that I did writing them.

Book Snowball in a Blizzard

    Book Details:
  • Author : Steven Hatch
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2016-06
  • ISBN : 9781786490179
  • Pages : 312 pages

Download or read book Snowball in a Blizzard written by Steven Hatch and published by . This book was released on 2016-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There's a running joke among radiologists: finding a possible tumour in a mammogram, they say, is akin to finding a snowball in a blizzard. The result? Up to 30% of breast cancer surgeries are done on those who have no cancer at all. In this landmark book, medical professor Steven Hatch reveals that although modern medicine has reached new levels of scientific prowess, we know far less than we think we do. Indeed, CAT scans, MRIs, Mammograms, and blood tests provide a wall of data where false positives are rife. Thus, to be a good doctor, surgeon, or psychiatrist, it is just as important to know what one doesn't know, as what one does.

Book One Excellent One Looking for and Being

Download or read book One Excellent One Looking for and Being written by Hawk and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2008-02 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One Excellent One, Looking For And Being..." is a book about "Trying To Be Excellent." It will challenge you to be neater and more organized, help you to consider where you are in your life, and inspire you with some little wisdom and encouragement. Accept the goal; "Try To Be Excellent." Try To Be Excellent for yourself and those that you love, those you may next meet, or even those you once loved... and discover the rewards. It has nothing to do with being arrogant or being better than anyone else. Rather, it is more about surveying your own life and then making a more deliberate and conscious effort to mold your life with attitude and action, your world, into a better place. Instead of just going from day to day, consider looking at yourself, your life, and how you might make it more excellent, and keep it that way. Make the sacrifice, do what it takes, to make your life, your world and our world, something excellent... Try To Be Excellent. One thing builds upon the next. You start in one place and move and grow to somewhere else. Much is beyond our control. However, where we have the option to decide, decide carefully. Every step you take brings you in some direction, either closer to your goals and dreams, or further from them. "Try To Be Excellent," in your attitude, in the things that you choose to surround you, in the wisdom you choose to follow, who you trust and believe, and in what your life becomes. Try to be strong, wise, and loving. "Wisdom is the root of all happiness, and love dwells there." -Hawk. Hawk has worked as a Private Investigator for most of his life. This gave him a special insight and the ability to see the "three sides to every coin.," of many different kinds of relationships. It made him more philosophical about life and amazingly, not bitter or cynical. He witnessed the best and the worst that people had to offer each other. When the love of his life left him, he took a good look at his own life and decided that he could improve. Not just change, but to "Try To Be Excellent." With who he was, with where he was, with the things and the people in his life... He adopted an Excellentway to live by trying to be excellent. He accepted the challenge of a more simple, organized life, and with attitude, action, and sacrifice, became stronger, wiser, and happier. Hawk is single and lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, but travels extensively. He is committed to trying to be excellent, both in his personal and business life. He has a love for both nature and high technology, and works on various projects both large and small. He hopes that in some small way, this book will help to encourage people and in so doing, make the world a better place.
