Book excerpt: INTRODUCTION An extensive well-manicured lawn on the English speaking northern half of the imaginary lush tropical isle of Blue Horizon facilitates the staging of the beginning of an interactive narration lasting three days featuring three main characters among several others. The chief characters are Charley 'Charcoal' Cole - a witty and humorous corporate lawyer who's few years from being a sexagenarian, his friend, - a gorgeous and vivacious young mathematics teacher (Vivia Soucha) who's just about half of his age, and in whom he has a deep personal interest, Maynard Navarre (affectionately called Mo), - a native of the French speaking Department of the isle and who's meeting Charcoal for the first time. He's also the boyfriend of Charley's daughter, - Charlotte; and Dassa, - a warm and friendly young woman who suffers from a slight language disorder known as malapropism. Other characters include but not limited to the affable, ultra wealthy four times widowed Mrs. Fatima Moreton who owns at least ten percent of the properties on the isle, the famed couple Edward Blake (a cartoonist and marriage officer), his wife, - the beautiful Andrea Jules who loves singing especially to children, members of the Navarre family especially Maynard's exuberant and rambunctious fifteen year old nephew Antoine, Charley's handsome adult son, - Charleston, and the latter's sweetheart, - Carolina Southby. Oblivious to the hostess Mrs. Moreton, the organizing and staging of the social coincided with Valentine's day and what was expected to be a normal afternoon discussing the community's interests turned out to be a splendid occasion for couples and friends to reaffirm their love and commitment to each other's significant 'half.' It was also an opportune time for 'Charcoal' to cleverly calculate his every move in getting to Vivia's heart. She too had expectations and was fully prepared for any eventuality which brought an interesting end to day one. Arguably, day two, - a public holiday is the most entertaining for everyone, - many hours full of euphoric enjoyment including a large magical-like fair, sheer happiness at the races, a significant and fabulous birthday party, a spectacular beach get together and more. The story begins to unwind and ends on day three when the chief players are taken on an educational tour of the Navarre's extensive livestock and horse racing farms where they spend extended hours gaining knowledge, learning about farm animals and many and varied aspects of horse racing.

Hounds of the Monks: a warrior flees with his family to save his daughter from the lustful, cruel king of the land. Stolen Princess: Rosemarie, a young woman rescued from prostitution, finds herself alone and homeless when her husband is lost at sea and her in-laws throw her out of her husband’s home. Rosemarie’s fate momentarily worsens when she is raped and almost killed, but, miraculously, she is saved by strange old women who take Rosemarie to a secluded, enchanting island. The heavenly place seems like freedom until Rosemarie realizes that there are sinister forces around her who intend to keep her captive in the isle. Rosemarie’s past may be her only salvation. Bastard of the Mist: Angeline, a young widow, arrives at a remote and beautiful rehabilitation center for veterans to work as the assistant of the institution’s co-founder. Angeline is supernaturally gifted. Her dark powers clash with evil forces that exist in the forests surrounding the institution when she discovers a sinister plot by her employer Professor Kvalish, a man with a mysterious past. An unraveling thus begins and threatens the existence of everyone at the rehabilitation center. Nature’s Call Girl: in a futuristic Earth, a global war is ongoing between humankind and nature. Here, a fictitious country Parakrytheon, has built a nation devoid of plant and animals with artificially created weather to protect its humans from natural predators. On a fictitious island Kamin, humans live harmoniously with nature and beast. This place has the resources that Parakrytheon needs to defeat its natural enemy. Twin brothers Hagaath and Laksha, and their sister Kamina, are the means to this end.

Book excerpt: Sometimes compared to the Saint-Tropez of Brigitte Bardot in the 1950s, Comporta, with its relaxed pace and artistic community, is the ideal destination for those looking to wander off course. It’s the newfound favorite of personalities such as Jacques Grange, Farida Khelfa, François Dumas, the Espírito Santo family, and Madonna, who shares photographs of taking her kids to the beach and horseback riding in the dunes of nearby Carvalhal on weekends. This fishing village boasts swaths of beaches, patchworks of rice paddies, and an ecosystem filled with storks and frogs, all a serene backdrop for the striking homes found there: rustic cabanas and thatched-roof huts reflecting the carefree lifestyle that has become Comporta’s hallmark. This distinctive setting challenges the minds of architects and designers, yielding unique spaces that delightfully blur the line between interior and exterior. Within these pages, the region’s characteristic cobalt blue is reflected from the sky and sea to the walls, shutters, and design pieces that adorn its homes, both picturesque and bold.
