Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER For a generation, Anne Perry’s New York Times bestselling novels have invited readers to explore the brilliantly seductive heart of Victorian London, where great wealth and great evil live side by side, and great men sometimes make unfortunate choices. In Blind Justice, Hester Monk, the wife of William Monk, commander of the Thames River Police, questions the finances of a London church whose members’ hard-earned charitable gifts appear to have ended up in the pocket of charismatic preacher Abel Taft, paying for his fine home and the stylish outfits of his wife and daughters. Taft is accused of extortion, and brilliant barrister Oliver Rathbone, newly appointed a judge, is chosen to preside over his trial. It seems clear that Taft is indeed guilty. However, at the last second, the defense produces a witness who completely undermines the charges. Then Rathbone makes a well-meaning but reckless move that could ruin his career, his reputation, and his life. Blind Justice presents a rich and lively panorama of London life, from the teeming Thames docks to the wealthy West End, while unfolding a magnificent courtroom drama. And while justice, law, and morality hang in the balance, Hester and Monk race to save their distinguished friend Rathbone from disgrace. The incomparable art of Anne Perry grips us fast until the final, unforgettable scene. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Anne Perry's Blood on the Water. He quickly learned the only viable suspect was himself, with no other persons of interest. Months later, he suffered severe burns to his legs from a mysterious courthouse fire. He endured constant pain, refused to eat, was uncooperative, and wanted to die. When a Justice Department agent informed Royal that the police would never investigate those responsible for the murders of his family, he offered an opportunity to track down those liable. Ray’s Special Forces experience provided an excellent disguise to destroy an expanding drug ring that had ordered the hit on his family. Can their growing relationship and their faith withstand the perils and challenges of Royal’s quest for Blind Justice? Will the brown-eyed nurse accept his dispensing of Justice? Would he still love her if she revealed her hidden secrets and confessed her past? Their Faith will be tested in a roller coaster of trials, emotions, and deceit.

Book Blind Justice A Man of the Cloth

Download or read book Blind Justice A Man of the Cloth written by M Elle Kelso and published by Magek Ink Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06-11 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gifted psychic Norrie Benedict knows she must stop a serial killer wreaking havoc in Rocklynne, Oregon. Dubbed “The Preacher”, he says he kills in the name of Satan yet considers himself the Son of God. Norrie considers him just plain mad. She knows he’s a threat to the women of the night in her city and vows to stop him but no matter what they do, he is always one step ahead of the police. She accepts the invitation of Lt. Dylan Jones and Det. Brandon Hawke to assist in capturing this murdering maniac. She uses her psychic edge to read murder scenes for the police and attempts to make contact with the killer. She wants to stop him, or figure out who he is, before he kills again. Her psychic abilities help her make contact, but she can’t see the man in any of her mental connections. Is that due to her medical condition? She lost her sight in a car accident but gained the ability to connect to people’s minds through touch. What Norrie finds odd is the murderer seems to know he must never show his face when she makes contact. Is he someone she knows? She doesn’t learn nearly enough before she realizes she will be his next victim. Occasional swear words where appropriate, no full-out sex scenes – just Norrie’s daydreams. And no satanic blatherings by a tetched writer. Some gruesome descriptions, but not over-done. BLIND JUSTICE was an RWA Golden Heart finalist in 2003 and 2004 Previously published as Blind Justice in 2004 and as A Man of the Cloth in 2019. This book has been extensively revised to bring it into the present.

Book Justice of Shattered Dreams

Download or read book Justice of Shattered Dreams written by Michael A. Ross and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2003-09-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appointed by Abraham Lincoln to the U.S. Supreme Court during the Civil War, Samuel Freeman Miller (1816--1890) served on the nation's highest tribunal for twenty-eight tumultuous years and holds a place in legal history as one of the Court's most influential justices. Michael A. Ross creates a colorful portrait of a passionate man grappling with the difficult legal issues arising from a time of wrenching social and political change. He also explores the impact President Lincoln's Supreme Court appointments made on American constitutional history. Best known for his opinions in cases dealing with race and the Fourteenth Amendment, particularly the 1873 Slaughter-House Cases, Miller has often been considered a misguided opponent of Reconstruction and racial equality. In this major reinterpretation, Ross argues that historians have failed to study the evolution of Miller's views during the war and explains how Miller, a former slaveholder, became a champion of African Americans' economic and political rights. He was also the staunchest supporter of the Court of Lincoln's controversial war measures, including the decision to suspend such civil liberties as habeas corpus. Although commonly portrayed as an agrarian folk hero, Miller in fact initially foresaw and embraced a future in which frontier and rivertown settlements would bloom into thriving metropolises. The optimistic vision grew from the free-labor ideology Miller brought to the Iowa Republican Party he helped found, one that celebrated ordinatry citizens' right to rise in station an driches. Disillusioned by the eventual failure of the boomtowns and repelled by the swelling coffers of eastern financiers, corporations, and robber barons, Miller became an insistent judicial voice for western Republicans embittered and marginalized in the Gilded Age. The first biography of Miller since 1939, this welcome volume draws on Miller's previously unavailable papers to shed new light on a man who saw his dreams for America shattered but whose essential political and social values, as well as his personal integrity, remained intact.

Book Teachings of the Santer a Gods

Download or read book Teachings of the Santer a Gods written by Ócha'ni Lele and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-06-24 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book to explore the sacred myths of Santería • Includes more than 100 myths, stories, and histories about the odu and the orishas • Reassembles the oral fragments from the African diaspora into coherent stories • Demonstrates that the African peoples, specifically the Yoruba, were deeply spiritual At the core of the diloggún--the sacred divination system of Santería--are the sacred stories known as the patakís, narratives whose themes are as powerful and relevant today as they were in the minds of the ancient Yoruba who safeguarded them. Each patakí is connected to one or more of the 16 odu, the principal creative forces of Santería. Some recount the lives of orishas on earth, others the lives of individuals in heaven, and some tell of the odu themselves, for even they once walked the earth as mortals. The first book to explore these ancient African stories in English, Teachings of the Santería Gods recounts more than 100 of these sacred parables, including many stories reassembled from the oral tradition of the African diaspora. Ranging from creation myths to what happens when a love potion works far too well, these stories share the wisdom and spirituality of the Yoruba people of ancient Africa and form the living, oral bible of one of the world’s fastest-growing faiths.
