Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Land of the Rising Sun comes the delightful and affectionate toy dog known as the Japanese Chin, revered for centuries as a palace treasure and today counted among the world's most beloved companion dogs. This Comprehensive Owner's Guide, written by Juliette Cunliffe, provides an entertaining portrait of the Chin's origins and history, including Commodore Perry's famous door-opening visit to Japan, the breed's rise to the favor of England's Queen Alexandra, and the Chin's introduction to the United States. In the chapter on the breed's characteristics, the author reveals her insight into this "happy little character with a down-to-earth, yet bumptious, personality." Potential owners are made aware that, despite his small size, the Chin has a larger-than-life approach to the world, and that as a home companion, the Chin demands affection and little else, being a naturally clean pet, often compared to a cat in cleanliness, sophistication, and self-awareness. In the home of a loving owner, the Chin will thrive and become a superb addition to the family, even one with children and cat or two!New owners will welcome the well-prepared chapter on finding a reputable breeder and selecting a healthy, sound puppy. Chapters on puppy-proofing the home and yard, purchasing the right supplies for the puppy as well as house-training, feeding, and grooming are illustrated with photographs of handsome adults and puppies. In all, there are over 135 full-color photographs in this useful and reliable volume. The author's advice on obedience training will help the reader better mold and train into the most well-mannered dog in the neighborhood. The extensive and lavishly illustrated chapter on healthcare provides up-to-date detailed information on selecting a qualified veterinarian, vaccinations, preventing and dealing with parasites, infectious diseases, and more. Sidebars throughout the text offer helpful hints, covering topics as diverse as historical dogs, breeders, or kennels, toxic plants, first aid, crate training, carsickness, fussy eaters, and parasite control. Fully indexed.

Book excerpt: This collection of Japanese fairy tales is the outcome of a suggestion made to me indirectly through a friend by Mr. Andrew Lang. They have been translated from the modern version written by Sadanami Sanjin. These stories are not literal translations, and though the Japanese story and all quaint Japanese expressions have been faithfully preserved, they have been told more with the view to interest young readers of the West than the technical student of folk-lore.... In telling these stories in English I have followed my fancy in adding such touches of local color or description as they seemed to need or as pleased me, and in one or two instances I have gathered in an incident from another version. At all times, among my friends, both young and old, English or American, I have always found eager listeners to the beautiful legends and fairy tales of Japan, and in telling them I have also found that they were still unknown to the vast majority...

Melinda Langston, amateur sleuth and Bow Wow Boutique owner, finds herself "Glamping Under the Stars" with a blackmailer, Orange County's hottest new gourmet pet chef, Addison Rae. But before Mel can put an end to Addison's strong-arming, the chef is found dead. Mel is just one of many suspects who had motive to snuff out the demanding chef. Was it Redmond, the angry sous chef who detested working for Addison? What about rival chef, Pepper Maddox? The glamping chef gig was hers until Addison blackmailed her way into the job. And then there's Asher, a charming fellow camper whose past relationship with Addison isn't the only secret he's guarding. Mel's not one to tuck tail and run, even when it looks like she may be the next victim. Sparkle Abbey is the pseudonym of two mystery authors (Mary Lee Woods and Anita Carter). They are friends and neighbors as well as co-writers of the Pampered Pets Mystery Series. The pen name was created by combining the names of their rescue pets--Sparkle (Mary Lee's cat) and Abbey (Anita's dog). They reside in central Iowa, but if they could write anywhere, you would find them on the beach with their laptops and, depending on the time of day, with either an iced tea or a margarita. Book excerpt: ONE OF THE FOREMOST WORKS OF TWENTIETH-CENTURY CHINESE LITERATURE This beautifully portrayed epic family history spans one hundred years, from the 1890s during the later stages of the Qing Dynasty to the 1990s, traversing the experiences of five generations of women. Yu is the central character, whose life story is woven through the lives of her grandmother, mother, sisters, and niece. She loves her parents but at a tender age realizes they do not love her. After committing two unforgivable sins, she is sent away to live in the city but is soon abandoned. Yu's life becomes a quest for love; she is fragile but resilient, lonely but determined. Now, in the 1980s, Yu becomes caught up in the political storm and comes close to love but falls short. Her last chance at getting what she desires will ultimately come at a tragic cost. A political satirist in the guise of a mystical writer, Xu Xiaobin masterfully creates an atmosphere where distinctions are blurred; memories of the past and present are intertwined; realities and illusions are fused without a clear trace; and events occur in unspecified places but tinted with fairylike imaginations. Xu Xiaobin is a rare talent with a vast knowledge of history, religion, and culture, and occupies a unique place in modern Chinese literature. When Feathered Serpent won China's inaugural Creative Writing Award for women's literary fiction, it was described as "a breakthrough, a record-setting novel in China's women's literature" and "the best fiction at the end of the century in China."

Book excerpt: Don’t torture yourself, Ruth Crowder Flood has always told Harry Stein. Don’t let your life be ruined by what might have been. But he can’t help it. And, in truth, neither can she. In the one short moment that was theirs, Ruth had too much pride and Harry didn’t have enough courage. In the instant that defined the rest of their lives, they both hesitated and were lost, condemned to wander in a wilderness of their own making. In Harry & Ruth, Howard Owen’s fifth novel, two unlikely lovers learn just how much their lives can be defined by one bad decision. They will be seasoned by wars both foreign and domestic, by Washington and state politics, by an Olympic swimmer they’ve both failed in different ways, by business and financial success—and by two haunted and disastrous marriages. Through it all, Harry and Ruth endure—on paper. They begin writing in the fall of 1942 and never stop. Now it’s the fall of 1995, hurricane season again. Ruth Crowder Flood is 70 years old, the matriarch of a damaged, secret-hoarding family. Harry Stein is dying, and he wants to tie up a plenitude of loose ends. All that remains is for some of the famous Crowder family reserve to melt away, so that a disaffected daughter might understand everything, even the mystery of what happened to Henry Flood.

Book excerpt: Mother is ninety-six or ninety-seven, we’re not sure and there’s no one around to set us straight. The reality of her age seems to have slipped into the dustbin of time. She now resides at the Active Life Shukugawa, a well-run nursing home outside of Ashiya, Japan. I fl y from Newark three or four times a year taking turns with my three brothers visiting. She’s well cared for, is lively, and as reported by the staff, is the center of the home’s social life. She sings a lot. Unhappily she is confi ned to a wheelchair but this in no way puts a pall on her good spirits. When I was last there she studied me carefully as I entered her room and said, “You know, you look just like my daughter.” After a pause she reconsidered and added, “Please, I hope you’ll not be offended, but my daughter is prettier.” Memory for most of us is more like Mother’s than we care to acknowledge. Most believe in the facts of our memory; what we conjure out of our past is trustworthy. It is not. In truth memory has no conscience, is devoid of chronology, and its lapses and confusions are not necessarily a condition of advanced age. Early childhood memories are without context. Flashing on them is like flipping through an old photo album, the snapshots pasted in pellmell. Tested against others’ memories, it’s Rashomon. In recounting the tale of my early life in Japan, I will allow memory’s caprice. I could not do otherwise.

Book The Crane Wife

Download or read book The Crane Wife written by CJ Hauser and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2023-06-27 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A memoir in essays that expands on the viral sensation “The Crane Wife” with a frank and funny look at love, intimacy, and self in the twenty-first century. From friends and lovers to blood family and chosen family, this “elegant masterpiece” (Roxane Gay, New York Times bestselling author of Hunger) asks what more expansive definitions of love might offer us all. A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: TIME, THE GUARDIAN, GARDEN & GUN "Hauser builds their life's inventory out of deconstructed personal narratives, resulting in a reading experience that's rich like a complicated dessert—not for wolfing down but for savoring in small bites." —The New York Times “Clever, heartfelt, and wrenching.” —Time “Brilliant.” —Oprah Daily Ten days after calling off their wedding, CJ Hauser went on an expedition to Texas to study the whooping crane. After a week wading through the gulf, they realized they'd almost signed up to live someone else's life. What if you released yourself from traditional narratives of happiness? What if you looked for ways to leave room for the unexpected? In Hauser’s case, this meant dissecting pop culture touchstone, from The Philadelphia Story to The X Files, to learn how not to lose yourself in a relationship. They attended a robot convention, contemplated grief at John Belushi’s gravesite, and officiated a wedding. Most importantly, they mapped the difference between the stories we’re asked to hold versus those we choose to carry. Told with the late-night barstool directness of your wisest, most bighearted friend, The Crane Wife is a book for everyone whose path doesn't look the way they thought it would; for everyone learning to find joy in the not-knowing and to build a new sort of life story, a new sort of family, a new sort of home to live in.

Book The Columbia Anthology of Modern Japanese Literature

Download or read book The Columbia Anthology of Modern Japanese Literature written by J. Thomas Rimer and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-24 with total page 872 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Volume 2 of Columbia's comprehensive anthology of modern Japanese literature, thoughtfully selected and carefully translated readings portray the vast changes that have transformed Japanese culture since the end of the Pacific War. Beginning with the Allied Occupation in 1945 and concluding with the early twenty-first century, these stories, poems, plays, and essays reflect Japan's heady transition from poverty to prosperity, its struggle with conflicting ideologies and political beliefs, and the growing influence of popular culture on the country's artistic and intellectual traditions. Organized chronologically and by genre within each period, readings include fiction by Hayashi Fumiko and Oe Kenzaburo; poems by Ayukawa Nobuo, Katsura Nobuko, and Saito Fumi; plays by Mishima Yukio and Shimizu Kunio; and a number of essays, among them Eto Jun on Natsume Soseki and his brilliant novel Kokoro (The Heart of Things), and Kawabata Yasunari on the shape of his literary career and the enduring influence of classical Japanese literature. Some authors train a keen eye on the contemporary world, while others address the historical past and its relationship to modern culture. Some adopt an even broader scope and turn to European models for inspiration, while others look inward, exploring psychological and sexual terrain in new, often daring ways. Spanning almost six decades, this anthology provides a thorough introduction to a profound period of creative activity.
