Book excerpt: Where is God when we are hurting or in despair? How can we find hope even when we feel hopeless? Pain, struggle, and despair are part of life, and they test our character as God's people. John Wimmer approaches these challenges to our faith realistically and thoughtfully. He does not offer easy answers or platitudes like "Everything happens for a reason." We can't always understand or control many things that happen to us, but we can choose how we respond to our circumstances. Wimmer encourages us to view times of difficulty as opportunities for spiritual and personal growth. Rather than diminishing our faith, pain and despair can lead us to greater trust in God. To endure through such times is a blessing. This inspiring book offers practical help for moving from pain and despair to hope. Wimmer reminds us that with hope we also have faith—not the false belief that our lives will be pain-free but the assurance that God will be with us through our most challenging times and lead us to deeper levels of spiritual growth and wisdom.

Book Blessed Victors

  • Author : Ruth Sutcliffe
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing

  • ISBN : 0567710777
  • Pages : 306 pages

Download or read book Blessed Victors written by Ruth Sutcliffe and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2024-07-25 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The late second through third centuries saw the remarkable confluence of the early church's developing identity, theological understanding and praxis, with a period of opposition and intermittent persecution from the world around it. Theology necessarily engaged with the persecution experience, as the church considered the goodness and providence of God, the Name to be confessed and the purposeful outcome of the antagonism they faced. Ruth Sutcliffe argues that the early fathers' theological understanding of the role of persecution in the Christian life informed their exhortations to individual and communal response, contributing to the church's remarkable survival and growth through this period. Four great thinkers of this era - Clement and Origen of Alexandria and Tertullian and Cyprian of Carthage - each have much to contribute to a theological understanding of Christian persecution, and Sutcliffe explores their widely different perspectives, intellectual milieu and experiences. She explains these differences and similarities in terms of their use of the Scriptures, in conversation with their own contexts and agendas; concluding that their differences in approach to persecution can be explained theologically, and that these differences offer a unique window into their respective thought. Despite such differences, Sutcliffe stresses that the early church did have a fundamentally coherent “theology of persecution” which speaks to the worldwide church today.

Unfortunately, life does not always seem to cooperate with those plans. In these times, we may become confused, frustrated, upset, and seemingly hopeless. We may ask God why He has allowed a hardship or great devastation to take place in our lives. The answer as to why this situation is happening may come in any length of time. For some, the reason may come quickly. For others, the answer may not come for years to follow. Nevertheless, we must remain patient for His answer and continue to press on through each trial. We must do this not only to grow in our own trust in God but also to show others the power of faith and God's miracles. Through each trial that you face, you are given the opportunity to have a stronger relationship with Christ. When you endure through those trials, you become a living testimony for God's grace. You become a source of hope and inspiration to others going through their own trials. Take each battle one day at a time. It is not always easy, and at times you may stray off course, but you will likely discover a greater purpose for your time here on earth while you patiently endure.

Book excerpt: "Hartin's study begins with a detailed examination of the letter's literary background and its relationships within the context of the Jewish, Hellenistic, and emerging Christian worlds. From this examination James emerges clearly as a writing at home within the world of Jewish-Christianity. Those complex issues of genre, authorship, and readership are examined, and Hartin argues convincingly that James is an early writing, stemming from the authority of James, the brother of the Lord, who writes to those Jewish-Christians in the dispersion of northern Syria."--BOOK JACKET.
