Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: McMillan blends real life experiences with imagination to weave a story of an independent backwoods “country boy” who meets a sophisticated “city girl”. Follow their lives, sometimes humorous, sometimes serious, as two families try to mesh. The book is typical of East Texas Piney Woods during the early 1940s through the war years. Rex Horn meets Mary Ann Anderson on a trying journey with his science and math teacher to Detroit Michigan. Their mission is to pick up a new school bus chassis to replace that of a worn out school bus. Mary Ann and her mother are on the train, and she and Rex meet. The two young people are immediately smitten and intrigued by the other’s lifestyle. Mary Ann visits Rex at his rustic, pioneer type home, nestled in a remote section of an area known as The Big Thicket in the southern part of East Texas. Mary Ann is intrigued by Rex’s parents who, unlike her parents, are uneducated but respected and leaders in the Foggy Bottom Community. Martha Horn, Rex’s mother and Beth Horn, his sister, are both dynamic women who teach Mary Ann life skills necessary to live off the land. Rex’s encounter with a panther, while trapping in the Neches river bottom, add spice to the story and peak Mary Ann’s interest. Many of the tales related in this story are true, and are written as they happened; others are embellished. The reader will have fun trying to separate facts from fiction.

Book excerpt: April – 1862 With the Union Navy pounding at its doors, the time has come for the people of Confederate New Orleans to choose sides – and go to war. From the narrow streets of the French Quarter to wind swept Lake Ponchartrain and the vast bayou country, the battle of New Orleans plunged men and women into chaos, tragedy and a struggle for survival and revenge. Luke Coldiron came from the New Mexico territory to New Orleans with 250 horses to sell as mounts for the Confederate Cavalry. He found the city overrun by Union forces, a beautiful woman driven by fury, and an act of treachery that would pit him against a renegade Union marine commander. Susan Dauphin watched her world, created by generations of labor by her family, go up in smoke and flames. Driven into a struggle against the marauding Union marines, she would earn one man’s hatred, and another’s undying love. Marine Commander Rawls landed in New Orleans from Admiral Farragut’s Navy flotilla. Ripping into enemy heartland, he broke the Confederate hold on the city, and began a dirty private war of murder and theft of his own.

Book excerpt: This unique three-part novel assumes that, regardless of what Americans learn in school, the Southeast was not a barren wilderness when the English arrived at Jamestown. It was full of Native Americans and of other Europeans who were there for various reasons. Based on extensive research into the racial mixing that occurred in the early years of southeastern settlement, this provocative multi-generation story shows that people did not simply vanish, but that many were absorbed into the new communities that gradually formed throughout the southeast, becoming ¿white¿ whenever their complexions allowed. The inability to accept their true heritages illustrates the high price many of these people paid for their way of life. Diego Martin arrives in 1567 in the American Southeast¿the region the Spaniards call La Florida¿as a hog drover with a Spanish exploring party. The leader of the expedition turns against him and abandons him to the wilderness, where friendly natives rescue him. Daniel Hunter, a Quaker from Philadelphia, sets up a school among these ¿disadvantaged¿ mountain people and falls in love with a Martin daughter. Later, Daniel¿s descendants are living in the same town, though with little awareness of their ancestral past. The Martin family has split in two, the merchants in town denying any relationship to their racially mixed cousins on Mulatto Bald. A young woman from town, Galicia, falls in love with a young man from the bald, Will, not realizing that he is her cousin. They marry, have a daughter, and move to a new industrial center, becoming prominent citizens. When Will¿s son from a teenage liaison appears at his door, he invites him in, unwittingly setting the stage for a forbidden love between his unacknowledged son and his cherished daughter, neither of whom realizes that they are half-siblings. This is a novel you will not be able to put down without thinking and wondering ¿where will it take me next.¿

Book Iggy Pop Open Up and Bleed

Download or read book Iggy Pop Open Up and Bleed written by Paul Trynka and published by Crown Archetype. This book was released on 2011-12-07 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Fellow rock stars, casual members of the public, lords and media magnates, countless thousands of people will talk of their encounters with this driven, talented, indomitable creature, a man who has plumbed the depths of depravity, yet emerged with an indisputable nobility. Each of them will share an admiration and appreciation of the contradictions and ironies of his incredible life. Even so, they are unlikely to fully comprehend both the heights and the depths of his experience, for the extremes are simply beyond the realms of most people’s understanding.” —from the Prologue The first full biography of one of rock ’n’ roll’s greatest pioneers and legendary wild men Born James Newell Osterberg Jr., Iggy Pop transcended life in Ypsilanti, Michigan, to become a member of the punk band the Stooges, thereby earning the nickname “the Godfather of Punk.” He is one of the most riveting and reckless performers in music history, with a commitment to his art that is perilously total. But his personal life was often a shambles, as he struggled with drug addiction, mental illness, and the ever-problematic question of commercial success in the music world. That he is even alive today, let alone performing with undiminished energy, is a wonder. The musical genres of punk, glam, and New Wave were all anticipated and profoundly influenced by his work. Paul Trynka, former editor of Mojo magazine, has spent much time with Iggy’s childhood friends, lovers, and fellow musicians, gaining a profound understanding of the particular artistic culture of Ann Arbor, where Iggy and the Stooges were formed in the mid to late sixties. Trynka has conducted over 250 interviews, has traveled to Michigan, New York, California, London, and Berlin, and, in the course of the last decade or so at Mojo, has spoken to dozens of musicians who count Iggy as an influence. This has allowed him to depict, via real-life stories from members of bands like New Order and the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Iggy’s huge influence on the music scene of the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, as well as to portray in unprecedented detail Iggy’s relationship with his enigmatic friend and mentor David Bowie. Trynka has also interviewed Iggy Pop himself at his home in Miami for this book. What emerges is a fascinating psychological study of a Jekyll/Hyde personality: the quietly charismatic, thoughtful, well-read Jim Osterberg hitched to the banshee creation and alter ego that is Iggy Pop. Iggy Pop: Open Up and Bleed is a truly definitive work—not just about Iggy Pop’s life and music but also about the death of the hippie dream, the influence of drugs on human creativity, the nature of comradeship, and the depredations of fame.

Book excerpt: Siblings separated on an orphan train reunite years later to seek revenge in the lawless West in this “great novelist’s masterwork” (Stephen King). In 1869, the Dugan siblings board an orphan train in upstate New York. Adopted by different families at separate stops along the train’s westward journey, Clay, Zoe, and Drew vow to find one another as soon as they can, but tragic circumstances conspire against them. Clay avenges the brutal murder of his foster parents and becomes one of the most feared bounty hunters in the West. Raped by her new father, Zoe gives birth to a daughter whose vivid blue birthmark portends the gift of second sight. And Drew, abandoned in the desert by a religious fanatic, is rescued by renegade Apache brothers and falls in with a crowd of murderers, prostitutes, and bank robbers. When fate finally reunites the siblings, Zoe enlists Clay and Drew in a plot against a ruthless Colorado gold magnate bent on stealing her fortune. Decades spent practicing the art of survival have taught the Dugans that the odds are always stacked against them—but if they stopped to consider the odds, they would have been dead long ago. Hailed by the Chicago Tribune as a “great page-turning, stay-up-late-into-the-night-saga” and ideal for fans of Larry McMurtry and Cormac McCarthy, Power in the Blood takes readers on an epic journey into the dark heart of the American frontier.
