Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kentucky Encyclopedia's 2,000-plus entries are the work of more than five hundred writers. Their subjects reflect all areas of the commonwealth and span the time from prehistoric settlement to today's headlines, recording Kentuckians' achievements in art, architecture, business, education, politics, religion, science, and sports. Biographical sketches portray all of Kentucky's governors and U.S. senators, as well as note congressmen and state and local politicians. Kentucky's impact on the national scene is registered in the lives of such figures as Carry Nation, Henry Clay, Louis Brandeis, and Alben Barkley. The commonwealth's high range from writers Harriette Arnow and Jesse Stuart, reformers Laura Clay and Mary Breckinridge, and civil rights leaders Whitney Young, Jr., and Georgia Powers, to sports figures Muhammad Ali and Adolph Rupp and entertainers Loretta Lynn, Merle Travis, and the Everly Brothers. Entries describe each county and county seat and each community with a population above 2,500. Broad overview articles examine such topics as agriculture, segregation, transportation, literature, and folklife. Frequently misunderstood aspects of Kentucky's history and culture are clarified and popular misconceptions corrected. The facts on such subjects as mint juleps, Fort Knox, Boone's coonskin cap, the Kentucky hot brown, and Morgan's Raiders will settle many an argument. For both the researcher and the more casual reader, this collection of facts and fancies about Kentucky and Kentuckians will be an invaluable resource.

Download or read book Towboat on the Ohio written by James E. Casto and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To get a personal look at what it is like to work on the Ohio River, newspaperman James E. Casto spent eight days aboard the Blazer as it traveled the Ohio from Huntington, West Virginia, to Pittsburgh, up the Allegheny and the Mongahela, and then back to Huntington. The Paul G. Blazer, a gleaming white towboat owned and operated by Ashland Oil, pushes a group—or "tow," as the rivermen call it—of nine barges on this trip. Along the way, Casto introduces us to Captain Ronnie Davis, pilot Ronnie Burge, engineer Steve Bellomy, the mates, the deckhands, and the cook, as well as the river itself, the life and the beauty that are the Ohio. Interwoven with the narrative of the trip upriver and back is the history of commerce on the Ohio—of how the flatboats and keelboats gave way to the steamboats and how, in turn, the steamboats were replaced by today's powerful, diesel-powered boats such as the Blazer. Mark Twain wrote that the Mississippi had a new story to tell every day. The same can be said of the Ohio. As engaging as it is informative, Towboat on the Ohio tells one of the many stories of the busy, hardworking Ohio River.

Book New Horizons

Download or read book New Horizons written by Jeffrey L. Rodengen and published by Write Stuff Syndicate. This book was released on 1998 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning with a small land-based steam rig powered by two 45-horsepower boilers, Arch and Charlie Rowan founded a company that has since become one of the premier drilling, rig construction and aviation companies in the oil industry. Today, Rowan owns and operates the mobile offshore drilling units known as the gorillas-class rigs, the largest in the world standing at more than 560 feet. Throughout its 75 years, Rowan has struggled against stormy climates - both nature's and the cyclical economics tendency of the oil and gas industry. From the heat of Louisiana's marshes to the frigid cold of Alaskas North Slope, Rowanites overcame the elements to extract oil and gas from an uncooperative ground. They continue to challenge the ocean's violence and its wind-driven waves to supply the world's energy needs. Along the way, Rowan has become a world-class aviation and construction company. The company acquired ERA, which brought Alaskan pioneer Carl Brady into the fold, and LeTourneau, builder of the Gorilla drilling rigs as well as its famous earth-moving equipment. Each acquisition has helped Rowan in its quest for hydrocarbons. As the life blood of civilization, oil is a commodity affected by world politics, and Rowan's fortunes have a followed the roller coaster of international relations. Under Chairman and CEO Bob Palmer, the company gambled heavily during uncertain times when oil prices plummeted amid worldwide recession. Rowan shook off the despair that gripped its industry to emerge with record revenues, and world-class equipment and personnel. The challenge is constant, however. Future company leaders, brought up in Rowans family-like culture, must face the reality of the technical, financial and political hurdles their predecessors have conquered. In this comprehensive work, industrial historian and author Jeffrey L. Rodengen tells the fascinating story of 'The Legend of Rowan.' -- Publisher's description.

Book excerpt: Resting on the banks of the Ohio River, Ashland is eastern Kentucky's largest city. After the Poage family settled on land between Hoods and Keys Creeks in Boyd County, the area came to be known as the Poage's Settlement. Before long, a small town began to take form in the early 1800s with the establishment of a church, gristmill, sawmill, and homes built near Hoods Creek. In 1847, the townspeople built their first post office, and the Lexington and Big Sandy Railroad laid tracks through town, opening the area for even greater development. Named for the estate of Kentuckian Henry Clay, the city of Ashland was made official by an act of legislature in 1856.
