The workshop was jointly sponsored by EMBRAPA, IRRI, and CIAT. Brief review papers summarized the various classifification systems in use to describe the upland rice environment and the current status and thrust of upland rice improvement programs of the national and international organizations on 3 continents (Latin America, Africa, and Asia). Presentations were also made outlining the merits of various blast control strategies through breeding (horizontal/polygenic and vertical/monogenic resistance) and chemical control. Management practices needed to increase production were also outlined. Discussions at the workshop and while visiting experimental and farmers' fields resulted in the following specific recommendations for priority research activities to estimulate upland rice production increases around the world.
