Book Blantyre Mission and the Making of Modern Malawi

Download or read book Blantyre Mission and the Making of Modern Malawi written by C. Ross and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2018-05-16 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When a thousand leading members of the Nyasaland African Congress were detained under the emergency regulations imposed by the Federation government in 1959, the Presbyterian chaplains who ministered to them at Kanchedza Camp in Limbe were the late Rev Jonathan Sangaya and Rev Andrew C. Ross. They soon discovered that around 700 of the thousand men were members of the Church of Central African Presbyterian. This raised a question in the mind of the recently arrived Scottish missionary: how may we account historically for the fact that so many national leaders were Presbyterians? The quest to answer that question led him to produce the thorough examination of the foundation and early history of the Blantyre Mission of the Church of Scotland which is found in this book. Written in the mid-1960s, it remains today an indispensable work of reference for understanding the history of both church and nation in Malawi.

Book Christianity in Malawi A Source Book

Download or read book Christianity in Malawi A Source Book written by R. Ross and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2020-08-24 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many scholars have noted the importance of Christianity in Malawi and have written on the social, economic and political influence of the Christian faith. What is harder to find is a study of the nature of the faith, and an analysis of the inner logic of the religious consciousness which developed in Malawi as its peoples responded to the Christian message. By bringing forward a selection of key primary sources this book provides the opportunity to read the story of Malawian Christianity "from the inside." It allows some Malawian Christians to speak for themselves so that church history might be formed by listening directly and critically to voices from the past. This revised and expanded edition includes all the primary texts that appeared in the original 1996 version as well as six additional documents that extend the range of the collection.

Book Malawi s First Presbyterian Ministers

Download or read book Malawi s First Presbyterian Ministers written by Kenneth Ross and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2024-01-23 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Malawi's first two Presbyterian ministers, Harry Kambwiri Matecheta and Stephen Kundecha, were ordained in March 1911. Ecclesiastically, this made them fully equal with their European fellow-ministers. There were, however, subtle and not-so-subtle racial codes that reminded them that they were expected to occupy a subordinate position. This Occasional Paper explores how they discovered their identity and vocation in a challenging context.

Book Politics Christianity and Society in Malawi

Download or read book Politics Christianity and Society in Malawi written by R. Ross and published by African Books Collective. This book was released on 2020-02-27 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the death of John McCracken in 2017, Malawi lost a pre-eminent historian. This book celebrates McCrackens contribution to the study of Malawis history and seeks to build on his legacy. Part of his genius was that he identified themes that hold the key to understanding the history of Malawi in its broader perspective. The authors contributing to this volume address these themes, assessing the progress of historiography and setting an agenda for the further advance of historical studies. The book is a valuable resource for students, researchers and all who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of Malawis past and present.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the establishment of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Malawi in 1902, there is now available much information on the cases, narratives and experiences of women that shows the contribution of women to the progress of the SDA mission in Malawi. That record reveals a notable increase in the developing role of women in the SDA Church in Malawi, blended with both successful and challenging experiences. This has prompted the writing of this book. My aim is to present a historical record of the developing role of women in the SDA Church in Malawi. The purpose is to provide a first critical analysis, in a Malawian context, of a wider range of biblical and socio-cultural issues affecting the role of women in the SDA Church in Malawi.

Book History of the Zambia Baptist Association 1905 2005

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much good academic work has been done on the mainline churches in many African countries. But less so on the "smaller" missions and the churches that they founded. This book describes the history of one of the "smaller" churches the Zambia Baptist Association with its roots in Malawi (1905) and its missionary connections to England, South Africa, Sweden, Australia and finally to the Liebenzell Mission in Germany. It is thus one of the many contributions needed for the writing of a history of the Evangelical churches of Africa.
