Download or read book Girls and Their Comics written by Jacqueline Danziger-Russell and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In America, comics and comic books have often been associated with adolescent male fantasy--muscle-bound superheroes and scantily clad women. Nonetheless, comics have also been read and enjoyed by girls. While there have been many strong representations of women throughout their history, the comics of today have evolved and matured, becoming a potent medium in which to explore the female experience, particularly that of girlhood and adolescence. In Girls and Their Comics: Finding a Female Voice in Comic Book Narrative, Jacqueline Danziger-Russell contends that comics have a unique place in the representation of female characters. She discusses the overall history of the comic book, paying special attention to girls' comics, showing how such works relate to a female point of view. While examining the concept of visual literacy, Danziger-Russell asserts that comics are an excellent space in which the marginalized voices of girls may be expressed. This volume also includes a chapter on manga (Japanese comics), which explains the genesis of girls' comics in Japan and their popularity with girls in the United States. Including interviews with librarians, comic creators, and girls who read comics and manga, Girls and Their Comics is an important examination of the growing interest in comic books among young females and will appeal to a wide audience, including literary theorists, teachers, librarians, popular culture and women's studies scholars, and comic book historians.

Download or read book THE QUIRKY CLAN written by Anna Rains and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2024-04-02 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Quirky Clan – A Biography of an Eccentric Family’s Unconventional Lives is the story of the extraordinary life of Anna Rains and her very eccentric family. Spanning five generations, it was written to tell her grandchildren and those coming after about the lives of their predecessors so that these wonderful stories would not be lost forever. At the centre of the story is Anna herself, and her unusual and colourful childhood. Often touching, always funny and upbeat, it begins with her travels round the country with her parents and siblings in a converted bus. A funfair and circus were part of these journeys. A remote cottage with no water, electricity, or sanitation, and Romany gypsy neighbours also played significant roles in the fascinating early life of the author. Her later life has been equally engrossing. She describes the one-way ticket to Hong Kong when she was eighteen and her experiences in the early seventies in California with hippie neighbours, (she grew up fast, she says!) Thumbnail sketches of her many jobs are amusingly combined with accounts of flying lessons, sailing, her forty-six moves to new homes, and stories about her aunt, eccentric mother and grandmother, and unusual friends. At the age of 81 she says she is still living life to the full. Never bored and, metaphorically, still finding ‘new mountains to climb’. One grandfather was a toy salesman, the other a colonel who was awarded the CMG for bravery in the First World War. Among the historical memories are details about this grandfather’s time in the trenches while serving in the Royal Scots, (The Royal Regiment). Accounts of his and her uncle’s military careers are included in the book. Beautifully written, and with a wonderful sense of fun and self-mockery, The Quirky Clan is an account of a life lived to the full by the indomitable Anna, and her zestful enjoyment of whatever fate has offered.

Download or read book The Psychological Development of Girls and Women written by Sheila Greene and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-27 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Choice Recommended Read This thoroughly revised new edition updates Sheila Greene's original transformative account of the psychological development of girls and women and the central role of time in shaping human experience. Greene critically reviews traditional and contemporary theoretical approaches – ranging from orthodox psychoanalysis to relational and post-modern theories – and argues that even those that claim to focus on development have presented a view of women's lives as fixed and determined by their nature or their past. These theories, she believes, should be rejected because of their inherent lack of validity and their frequently oppressive implications for women. Essential but often neglected insights from the more compelling developmental and feminist theories are woven together within a theoretical framework that emphasizes temporality, emergence and human agency. The result is a liberating theory of women's psychological development as constantly emerging and changing in time rather than as static and fixed by their nature, socio-cultural context and personal history. Updated for a new generation of readers, The Psychological Development of Girls and Women will continue to be essential reading for students and researchers in the psychology of women, developmental psychology and women's studies.

Download or read book Bulletproof Diva written by Lisa Jones and published by Anchor. This book was released on 2010-12-22 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Bulletproof Diva, Lisa Jones brings the wit and candor of her infamous Village Voice column, "Skin Trade," to a much larger audience. Chock full of the "fierce black girl humor" that has made her column so popular, this provocative collection of essays and observations on race, sex, identity, and the politics of style speaks to a young generation of blacks who were raised in an integrated society and are now waiting for America to deliver on its promises of equality. The thirty-seven short pieces and six long essays in Bulletproof Diva cover a wide range of topics, many of them extremely controversial. Jones moves smoothly from issues of ethnicity in a changing America, challenging viewpoints on African-American and mixed race identity, to "butt theory" and the roller-coaster politics of black hair. Written in a style that is as appealing as it is unapologetic, Bulletproof Diva marks the debut of a genuinely gifted young writer with a distinctive voice and a fresh perspective on the black cultural scene.
Download or read book Reading Comics written by Mila Bongco and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study explores how the definition of the medium, as well as its language, readership, genre conventions, and marketing and distribution strategies, have kept comic books within the realm of popular culture. Since comics have been studied mostly in relation to mass media and its influence on society, there is a void in the analysis of the critical issues related to comics as a distinct genre and art form. By focusing on comics as narratives and investigating their formal and structural aspects, as well as the unique reading process they demand, this study presents a unique contribution to the current literature on comics, and helps clarify concepts and definitions useful in studying the medium.
