Book Configuring Romanticism

Download or read book Configuring Romanticism written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-12-28 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Configuring Romanticism focuses on the ways in which “Romanticism” continues to change shape in light of new discoveries, new readings, new approaches. To this end, some essays here gathered offer novel interpretations of Romantic “classics” such as Wordsworth, Blake, and Southey, or discuss the Celtic roots of Romanticism. Others address the relationship of Romantic literature, particularly the work of Scott, Shelley, and De Quincey, to issues of colonialism and imperialism. Yet others trace the “afterlife” of Romanticism and the Romantics, specifically Byron, Shelley, and Keats, in the writings of Leigh Hunt, Elizabeth Gaskell, James Thomson, Algernon Swinburne, William Michael Rosetti, James Clarence Mangan, Francis Parkman, Gilbert and Sullivan, and T.S. Eliot, as well as in Dutch nineteenth-century criticism. The volume closes with discussions of the Romantic aspects of World War II propaganda, twentieth-century translations of the Aeneid in view of Romantic principles, the Romantic face of recent Québecois fiction, and present-day film versions of Jane Austen’s Emma.

Book Dark Figures in the Desired Country

Download or read book Dark Figures in the Desired Country written by Gerda S. Norvig and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1993-01-01 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Gerda Norvig has written a book on Blake's Bunyan illustrations that is much more than that: it revises our sense of Blake, of the relationship of illustrator to illustrated text, and the assumptions of Romantic and Romanticist writing. Blake, certainly, will not be the same after Norvig's vigorous analysis, and it is arguable that the same may be true of Romanticism."--Ronald Paulson, author of "Figure and Abstraction in Contemporary Painting" "Specialists in both Blake studies and English Romanticism will find this book extremely interesting and useful. Norvig carefully analyzes for the first time a set of Blake's most accomplished illustrations, a set that (as she points out) has very rarely been reproduced or exhibited. These designs certainly deserve to be better known, and Norvig's insightful and stimulating interpretation of them makes their importance to Blake's thought and career amply clear. This is certainly a book that all Blake specialists will have to know."--Anne K. Mellor, author of "Mary Shelley: Her Life, Her Fiction, Her Monsters"

Book excerpt: William Blake was an English poet, painter, and printmaker. Largely unrecognised during his lifetime, Blake is now considered a seminal figure in the history of the poetry and visual arts of the Romantic Age. His prophetic poetry has been said to form "what is in proportion to its merits the least read body of poetry in the English language". His visual artistry led one contemporary art critic to proclaim him "far and away the greatest artist Britain has ever produced". While Blake had a significant role to play in the art and poetry of figures such as Rossetti, it was during the Modernist period that this work began to influence a wider set of writers and artists. William Butler Yeats, who edited an edition of Blake's collected works in 1893, drew on him for poetic and philosophical ideas, while British surrealist art in particular drew on Blake's conceptions of non-mimetic, visionary practice in the painting of artists such as Paul Nash and Graham Sutherland. His poetry came into use by a number of British classical composers such as Benjamin Britten and Ralph Vaughan Williams, who set his works. Blake's thoughts on human nature greatly anticipate and parallel the thinking of the psychoanalyst Carl Jung. In Jung's own words: "Blake a tantalizing study, since he compiled a lot of half or undigested knowledge in his fantasies. According to my ideas they are an artistic production rather than an authentic representation of unconscious processes." Similarly, although less popularly, Diana Hume George claimed that Blake can be seen as a precursor to the ideas of Sigmund Freud.

Book William Blake Masterpieces of Art

Download or read book William Blake Masterpieces of Art written by Michael Kerrigan and published by Flame Tree Illustrated. This book was released on 2023-11-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New edition of William Blake in the popular Masterpieces of Art series. Rich and delicate, ethereal and muscular, the art of William Blake is as fascinating as the philosophies threading through his poetry and prophetic works. Presented here in this magnificent new collection, his vivid paintings and gently weaving illustrations are imprinted in the consciousness of Romantic art, but their impact on Gothic literature remains as strong and quixotic as the artist himself.
