Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preface This story is about the tribulations experienced by a typical American family during a one year period. As is often the case, the root cause for the Flynn familys conflict was the sin of passion. Two questions plead for answers. Does a typical family actually exist? By definition, typical means: Conforming to the essential features of a species, group, and class, pattern of action or behavior. Therefore, we can recognize similarities between families but each is atypical because of the unique personalities in each family, and also the diverse circumstances in which they live. We can further assume that no two people will react precisely the same to a given stimulus. A corollary question is: Can a truly unique event occur? By definition, unique means: Being the only one of its kind. A debater could claim uniqueness for any given event because circumstances were slightly different from all similar preceding events, or because the people who participated were unique. After considering those moot questions and counterpoints, one can assume there is nothing new under the sun. Every thought or action that man can initiate has probably occurred sometime during the history of mankind, with only minor circumstantial and personality differences. Therefore, no thought, event or action in an overall sense is totally unique. Conversely, every thought or action can claim uniqueness because of the uniqueness of individuals and their varied reactions to the same stimulus. It is claimed that no two snowflakes are identical, thus possessing uniqueness. Cannot the same be claimed by people? The foregoing is a caveat that actions of the Flynn family in this novel are both typical and atypical as they deal with happenstances that seemingly take control of their fates. Bizarre behavior and highly unusual situations create an intriguing year for the Flynns, with unexpected twists and surprises that border on being unique by any definition. This is a work of fiction. Names, characters, places and incidents either are the product of the authors imagination or are used fictitiously for plot enhancement and reality. Resemblance to actual person, living or dead, events, or locales is entirely coincidental

Book Different Strokes

Download or read book Different Strokes written by Cecil Harris and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-02-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The days of tennis as a country club sport for the aristocracy have long passed, as have the pre–Open era days when black players faced long odds just to be invited to the four Grand Slam events. An entire generation of sports fans has grown up seeing Venus and Serena Williams as the gold standard in American professional tennis. Although the Williams sisters have done more than any other players to make tennis accessible to a diverse population, it’s not as if the tennis revolution is over. When you watch tennis next, take a close look at the umpire, the person sitting in the high chair of authority at courtside. Look at the tournament referee and the tournament director, the officials who run the tournament. In those seats of power and influence, blacks are still woefully underrepresented. Different Strokes chronicles the rise of the Williams sisters, as well as other champions of color, closely examining how African Americans are collectively faring in tennis, on the court and off. Despite the success of the Williams sisters and the election of former pro player Katrina Adams as the U.S. Tennis Association’s first black president, top black players still receive racist messages via social media and sometimes in public. The reality is that while significant progress has been made in the sport, much work remains before anything resembling equality is achieved. Watch a book trailer.

Book excerpt: Anthony Angus O'Donnell has lived a life of suffering, cruelty, and depravation, and it has created a monster. Born at the height of the Irish Potato Famine, he suffered indignities that only a cruel world can heap upon one so unlucky as to be conceived in Ireland at that time. As a child, the regular beatings he endured inspired in the young victim a burning desire to rise above and succeed. Determined to achieve his dreams, he decided early on that morality is no barrier to his goals. There is no sin, no lie, no foul maneuver he will not use in this battle. His journey through college and his marriage to the daughter of an ultra-rich Englishman only served to harden his resolve. Because of his ever-maddening father-in-law, O'Donnell shifts his career ambitions to the Church of England. Almost immediately, the young man's steely ambition is rewarded with success for both O'Donnell and the church itself. He uses every one of the tools he adopted as a young man as a weapon to achieve what he demands from his life. At sixty-five, the famed Canon of the Bath Cathedral in England has more than earned the sobriquet of the "Good" Reverend.

Book Being the Other Woman

Download or read book Being the Other Woman written by Micalle A. Culver and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2012-02-16 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2002, Micalle was swept off her feet by a man who spoke rapturous words to her heart, whisked her away to exotic locations, and made her laugh to no end. Like kindred souls, the two connected instantly, leading to a euphoric romance. The catch: He's married. As one promise after another was broken, the storybook love affair began to unravel. Wrought with confusion, Micalle set out to discover how she could have allowed passion to overrule logic and wondered about the likelihood of their situation resulting in happily-ever-after. The other woman, Micalle discovered, walks into an affair blind and leaves wishing she were. Worse, there is hardly a book on the shelf to comfort her, awaken her, or better yet; stop her from making a disaster of her life. Finding little material to glean from, Micalle began asking her own questions. What she found was that her experience wasn't entirely unique. This epitome led to several years of research into the triangle of affairs and who the other woman really is. Being the Other Woman was written to illuminate her path. In sometimes humorous but often painful detail, Micalle gives the raw story of her own affair, countless interviews from women who became mistresses, and research into the psychology of the other woman and the man who cheats. What is really going on in the mind of the mistress? Her lover? His wife? Being the Other Woman will help the reader identify in what type of affair the other woman is involved and provide guidance as to whether or not the husband will really leave his wife, how to make smart relationship decisions, and how to heal from the tremendous pain one is bound to experience either by being the other woman or having one in your life.

Book Blake s Agitation

Download or read book Blake s Agitation written by Steven Goldsmith and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2013-03-15 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the Romantic period, the critical thinker's enthusiasm has served to substantiate his or her agency in the world. Blake’s Agitation is a thorough and engaging reflection on the dynamic, forward-moving, and active nature of critical thought. Steven Goldsmith investigates the modern notion that there’s a fiery feeling in critical thought, a form of emotion that gives authentic criticism the potential to go beyond interpreting the world. By arousing this critical excitement in readers and practitioners, theoretical writing has the power to alter the course of history, even when the only evidence of its impact is the emotion it arouses. Goldsmith identifies William Blake as a paradigmatic example of a socially critical writer who is moved by enthusiasm and whose work, in turn, inspires enthusiasm in his readers. He traces the particular feeling of engaged, dynamic urgency that characterizes criticism as a mode of action in Blake’s own work, in Blake scholarship, and in recent theoretical writings that identify the heightened affect of critical thought with the potential for genuine historical change. Within each of these horizons, the critical thinker’s enthusiasm serves to substantiate his or her agency in the world, supplying immediate, embodied evidence that criticism is not one thought-form among many but an action of consequence, accessing or even enabling the conditions of new possibility necessary for historical transformation to occur. The resulting picture of the emotional agency of criticism opens up a new angle on Blake’s literary and visual legacy and offers a vivid interrogation of the practical potential of theoretical discourse.
