Book Experimental Spindle Torque and Open water Performance of Two Skewed Controllable pitch Propellers

Download or read book Experimental Spindle Torque and Open water Performance of Two Skewed Controllable pitch Propellers written by Robert J. Boswell and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental results are presented on the spindle torque and open-water performance of two skewed controllable-pitch propellers. Both propellers have radial distributions of skew specified so that the section midchord is forward of the spindle axis at the inner radii and aft of the spindle axis at the outer radii. One propeller has no rake and the other has substantial forward rake. The experiments were conducted at steady conditions in uniform flow in a towing basin over a range of positive and negative pitch ratios and a range of positive and negative advance coefficients so that the complete maneuvering envelope of the ship was simulated in a quasi-steady manner. The experimental open-water performance was correlated with calculated values based on a least-squares fit to previous systematic experimental data.

Book Documentation of Programs for the Analysis of Performance and Spindle Torque of Controllable Pitch Propellers

Download or read book Documentation of Programs for the Analysis of Performance and Spindle Torque of Controllable Pitch Propellers written by Shou-Kuo Scott Tsao and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical method for the analysis of controllable pitch propeller characteristics is presented. This inverse problem is complicated due to the unknown circulation distribution and the off-design blade geometry. Therefore, a normal mode collocation method is introduced which simplifies the problem by a combination of design approaches. Starting with the transformation of blade geometry resulting from rotation about the spindle axis, a numerical lifting-surface computation is then applied on the exact three-dimensional basis and solved for the amplitude of each mode by collocation in order to obtain the circulation distribution and the thrust and torque thereof. The work has been modified by a reconstructed vortex lattice distribution and the consideration of hub image and deformed wake effect so that the accuracy is improved.

Book Performance and Blade Torque of a Series of Controllable Pitch Propellers

Download or read book Performance and Blade Torque of a Series of Controllable Pitch Propellers written by Shannon Curtis Powell and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Propulsion performance and blade spindle torque measurements are reported on a series of controllable pitch propellers, in regions of both ahead and reverse running. The blade torque measuring mechanism is satisfactory for cases in which large torques are expected. For regions of operation or designs in which these torques are small, an elastically restrained arrangement should be substituted for the flip-flop indication of the pre ent evic . The d sig of ela ically restr ined i strumentation r quires careful consideration of the effect of ven elastic deformation on the blade torque. For most engineering applications the performance coefficients for controllable pitch propellers can be the same as for a series of normal similar propellers having the pitch ratio to which the controllable blades are adjusted. The data can be used to estimate performance coefficients and blade torques for normal running ahead and reverse. (Author).

Book A Method of Calculating the Spindle Torque of a Controllable pitch Propeller at Design Conditions

Download or read book A Method of Calculating the Spindle Torque of a Controllable pitch Propeller at Design Conditions written by Robert J. Boswell and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A procedure for calculating the spindle torque and for determining the optimum spindle axis location of a controllable-pitch propeller at design conditions is presented. From the blade geometry and theoretical pressure distribution the hydrodynamic and centrifugal forces acting on the blade are obtained, and from the distribution of these forces the spindle torque is calculated. The optimum spindle axis location is then determined by an iteration process. An example is included to illustrate the procedure. (Author).

Book Thrust and Blade Spindle Torque Measurement of Five Controllable pitch Propeller Designs for Mso 421

Download or read book Thrust and Blade Spindle Torque Measurement of Five Controllable pitch Propeller Designs for Mso 421 written by E. Orm Hansen and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 71 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental study is presented of the blade spindle torque of five controllable-pitch propeller models, representing five different designs for MSO-421. The study covers a range of both positive and negative advance coefficients at both ahead and astern pitch settings. It was found that the blade with spindle axis located 40 percent of blade width from the leading edge and with uncambered National Advisory Council for Aeronautics Series 66 (NACA 66) airfoil blade sections modified by the Bureau of Ships required the least extreme value of spindle torque. Book Blade Spindle Moment on Controllable Pitch Propellers

Download or read book Blade Spindle Moment on Controllable Pitch Propellers written by Stephen B. Denny and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blade spindle moment was determined experimentally for a series of four controllable-pitch (C-P) propellers. The propellers of the series were five-bladed and the series exhibited variation in blade skew and blade area. Blade spindle moment values due to hydrodynamic and centrifugal forces are presented. These values were determined in steady state operating conditions for a large range of blade pitch settings and for the range of controllable-pitch propeller advance between the 'lock-shaft' astern operating conditions. The spindle moment data which are presented will enable designers of C-P propeller systems to estimate blade spindle moment loads and the input power necessary to rotate C-P blades during maneuvers. Recommendations are made for methods of applying blade skew to C-P propellers in order to gain improved cavitation performance and vibratory characteristics without compromising blade turning capabilities. Book Blade Spindle Moment on a Five Bladed Controllable Pitch Propeller

Download or read book Blade Spindle Moment on a Five Bladed Controllable Pitch Propeller written by Stephen B. Denny and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Blade spindle-moment values are presented for the operation of a five-bladed controllable-pitch propeller over a range of blade pitches and advance conditions. Spindle moment (blade turning effort) was measured on a single blade of NSRDC Model Propeller 4402 in an experimental program conducted in the 24-in. variable-pressure water tunnel. Experimental results are presented as mean spindle-moment values taken at steady-state operating conditions. No transient or time-dependent data were taken. The operating conditions investigated (1) positive pitch--steady ahead, (2) negative pitch--steady backing, and (3) negative pitch--ahead advance. The spindle moment due to hydrodynamic loading and that due to centrifugal forces were separated and nondimensionalized. The effects of Reynolds number and propeller blade cavitation are discussed briefly. (Author).
