The vision and idea revolve around creating a Super Majority Black Contiguous Region of States in the United States, where Black Americans can exercise political and economic empowerment. The concept of a Black American Homeland is based on the principle of creating a region where Black Americans can have control over their own destiny. This means having a say in the laws and policies that govern their every day lives, and having access to economic opportunities that are often denied to Black Americans. The objective is to create a region where Black Americans can live immune from discrimination and systemic racism, and where they can build a strong and prosperous community. The Black American Homeland would be located in the 8 States Southern Region of the United States, which includes states such as Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Arkansas, Mississippi and Tennessee. This region has an incredible history of Black culture and activism, and is home to many historically Black colleges and universities. The region has a substantial Black population, with some states having a Black population of over 33%. One of the major objective of the Black American Homeland is political empowerment. This means that the region would be controlled and governed by Black Americans, with Black politicians and officials holding positions of power at all levels of government. This would allow Black Americans to create policies that are customized to their specific needs and interests, and to ensure that their voices are heard in the halls of power. Moreover to political empowerment, the Black American Homeland would also provide economic empowerment for Black Americans. This means creating economic opportunities that are often denied to Black Americans, such as access to capital, job training programs, and support for Black-owned businesses. The region would also prioritize investment in infrastructure and education, in order to create a strong and prosperous economy. Another important aspect of the Black American Homeland is the Great Reverse Migration. This refers to the reverse movement of Black Americans from other parts of the country to the 8 States Southern Region, in order to build a strong and vibrant community. The Great Reverse Migration would be encouraged and supported by a range of policies, including affordable housing programs, Farm land, Business Capital, job training and placement programs, and other incentives. The vision of a Black American Homeland is not without its challenges. Creating a Super Majority Black Region of States raises questions about segregation and exclusion. However, the objective of the Black American Homeland is not to create a separate and unequal society, but rather to create a region where Black Americans can thrive and reach their full potential"--

Book excerpt: This book analytically reviews the impact of the global anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing (AML/CFT) framework on the compliance trajectory of a number of jurisdictions to this framework. The work begins by examining the international financial sector reform and its evolution to inculcate the global framework for AML/CFT regulations. It challenges the resulting uniform AML/CFT due to its paradoxical impact on the compliance trajectory of African countries and emerging economies (ACs/EEs). This is done through an examination of the pre-conditions for effective regulation and compliance drivers for ACs/EEs that reveals the behavioural impact of the AML/CFT standards on the bloc of countries. Through the application of agency theory, it explores the relationship between ACs/EEs on the one hand and the international financial institutions that formulate, disseminate and facilitate compliance with the global framework for AML/CFT standards on the other. The remaining chapters review empirically the compliance pressures and resulting compliance trajectory of ACs/EEs with the AML/CFT standards. The final part of the book provides a detailed explanation of the compliance challenges of ACs/EEs and the legitimacy concerns that facilitate this. This book offers a new direction on the impact of global AML/CFT standards on ACs/EEs and contributes to the understanding of the conditions under which the global standards are likely to facilitate proactive compliance within these blocs of countries. As such it will be a valuable resource for academics, researchers and policy-makers working in this area.

Book excerpt: Homelands blends oral history, documentary studies, and quantitative research to present a colorful local history with much to say about multicultural identity in the South. Homelands is a case study of a unique ethnic group in North America--small-town southern Jews. Both Jews and southerners, Leonard Rogoff points out, have long struggled with questions of identity and whether to retain their differences or try to assimilate into the nationalculture. Rogoff shows how, as immigrant Jews became small-town southerners,they constantly renegotiated their identities and reinvented their histories. The Durham-Chapel Hill Jewish community was formed during the 1880s and 1890s, when the South was recovering from the Reconstruction era and Jews were experiencing ever-growing immigration as well as challenging the religious traditionalism of the previous 4,000 years. Durham and Chapel Hill Jews, recent arrivals from the traditional societies of eastern Europe, assimilated and secularized as they lessened their differences with other Americans. Some Jews assimilated through intermarriage and conversion, but the trajectory of the community as a whole was toward retaining their religious and ethnic differences while attempting to integrate with their neighbors. The Durham-Chapel Hill area is uniquely suited to the study of the southern Jewish experience, Rogoff maintains, because the region is exemplary of two major trends: the national population movement southward and the rise of Jews into the professions. The Jewish peddler and storekeeper of the 1880s and the doctor and professor of the 1990s, Rogoff says, are representative figures of both Jewish upward mobility and southern progress.

Nine decades later, Dr. Abrian Malone receives an email from Arthel Johnson, the current president of this supposedly dead organization, urging that they meet. But before this can happen, Johnson is brutally murdered, his death making international headlines. Fortunately, Johnson has made arrangements for informing Malone of his intentions should he meet a violent end. Malone finds that the UNIA fortune has not been lost but has increased a thousandfold and is held in abeyance for future use, specifically to implement Garvey's Liberian Redemptive and unify Africa. Malone and his five closest friends, a gender and racially diverse group, are sent on a dangerous mission to locate the fortune by a certain date, least the fortune be lost forever, and initiate the redemptive. The trail to the fortune has been laid by Marcus Garvey himself and can only be deciphered by Malone and his friends. Further, through an indirect line of filiations, Garvey has endowed Malone with three physiological abilities to assist him in his quest. They also make him the greatest martial artist on the planet. But they are pursued over three continents by a villainous group of militarily trained Liberian assassins who want the fortune for themselves. Historical background necessarily is rich and the characters well-developed. The timeliness of the narrative is witnessed by the renewed interest in the continent of Africa by people of all nationalities. Will the implementation of Garvey's hypothetical Liberian Redemptive stabilize Africa and the Middle East and the rest of the modern world?
