Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Black Male Frames charts the development and shifting popularity of two stereotypes of black masculinity in popular American film: “the shaman” or “the scoundrel.” Starting with colonial times, Williams identifies the origins of these roles in an America where black men were forced either to defy or to defer to their white masters. These figures recur in the stories America tells about its black men, from the fictional Jim Crow and Zip Coon to historical figures such as Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. Du Bois. Williams argues that these two extremes persist today in modern Hollywood, where actors such as Sam Lucas, Paul Robeson, Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, and Morgan Freeman, among others, must cope with and work around such limited options. Williams situates these actors’ performances of one or the other stereotype within each man’s personal history and within the country’s historical moment, ultimately to argue that these men are rewarded for their portrayal of the stereotypes most needed to put America’s ongoing racial anxieties at ease. Reinvigorating the discussion that began with Donald Bogle’s seminal work, Toms, Coons, Mulattoes, Mammies, and Bucks, Black Male Frames illuminates the ways in which individuals and the media respond to the changing racial politics in America.

Book excerpt: These poems are both daring and precisely made. There is powerful longing here, and, without a carefully measured restraint, this emotive force could derail the poems, but they remain richly evocative and ask for the reader to be present in numerous and surprising ways. -Tim Seibles, Poet Laureate Emeritus of Virginia We look for truth in poetry; but some poets tell the truth better than others; and so we have Chad Frame's Little Black Book with lists/poems of male lovers. Frame has the skill and talent to change circumstances and incidents to artistry, gifted with the authenticity we want in a poem. We tell our students, "Be more like yourself, more and more each poem." Now we can just say, "Read Chad Frame." He's not afraid of fear; he's not ashamed of shame. Plato talks of pleasure/pain; and neuroscientists can now measure it; but nowhere do we know more its balance than in fine poetry. Part autobiography, almost novella-in-verse, we have characters, situations, and plot, elevated by craft and lyric to make poetry. Frame ends his book with the words 'this buoyant heart is yours'-We say "ours, too." Little Black Book moves poetry forward. -Grace Cavalieri, Poet Laureate of Maryland

Book From Within the Frame

Download or read book From Within the Frame written by Bertram D. Ashe and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book explores the written representation of African-American oral storytelling from Charles Chesnutt, Zora Neale Hurston and Ralph Ellison to James Alan McPherson, Toni Cade Bambara and John Edgar Wideman. At its core, the book compares the relationship of the "frame tale"-an inside-the-text storyteller telling a tale to an inside-the-text listener-with the relationship between the outside-the-text writer and reader. The progression is from Chesnutt's 1899 frame texts, in which the black spoken voice is contained by a white narrator/listener, to Bambara's sixties-era example of a "frameless" spoken voice text, to Wideman's neo-frame text of the late 20th century.
